Who: Mr. Wednesday and Dream.
What: Talking.
Where: The park.
When: Monday, April 8.
Warnings: Low.
Status: Completed GDoc.
It had been strange for Wednesday, being in Madison Valley. He wasn’t accustomed to being stuck in one place for too terribly long, and there he was. Stuck in a town with no means of getting out. It was unusual for him to not be able to leave, despite all his tricks and coercion that he was able to do. But… apparently the dome had more powerful magic than Wednesday had. But he was slowly adjusting to life here, and accepting the fact that he could not leave.
He had even gone so far as to offer being a guardian for a teenager. She had been willing to take him up on the offer, something he was grateful for. Having someone to be responsible for might end up being a good thing for him. Even if he didn’t know Elena too well just yet.
Wednesday had this particular day off work, so he was wandering through the park. It was a nice, pleasant day, and he intended to make the most of it.

Dream could understand not being used to being trapped in one place. It wasn't the first time for him either. Someone, wanting his sister Death, ended up trapping him instead of quite awhile. He hated it and he hated it here when he first arrived. Even more so when the nightmares went haywire and he couldn't do anything about it.
Nowadays, though, he was okay being here. He had Setsuna, who he was quite fond of. And he had Death, who, if there was any of his siblings he'd ended up getting stuck with, he was grateful it was her. Maybe Destiny and Despair wouldn't be so bad, but he was glad he wasn't stuck with Delirium or Destruction, or worse, Desire.
And while he was trying to be more social, he was still rather introverted. Still, he was trying, and since it was a nice day out, he decided to wander around town and ended up at the park. It was there he spotted an old friend. "Greetings, Odin," he nodded, figuring he wouldn't mind being called by his actual name. Dream at least made sure not to say it too loudly and only the two of them could hear it.
"Nice day out, isn't it?"

Wednesday didn’t mind being called Odin by the people who knew him as such. He would still introduce himself to people as Wednesday, but if a person knew him as something other than merely a man named Wednesday? He would accept being called by another name. Like with Dream. While he couldn’t recall ever introducing himself to Dream as Odin, he understood that some people were well aware of him being sad Norse god. Without him telling them.
He looked toward Dream, and offered him a small smile, “Hello, Dream.” Yes, he knew who this man was. He kind of had to, didn’t he? “It’s a lovely day,” he decided. “I, for one, am happy spring has arrived. Or, at least, that it seems to be here for good. One never knows, especally here.”
He knew that Madison Valley had its own ideas of what the weather, among other things, should be like.
“How are you doing today?”
***
Dream did go by many names - Morpheus, Kai'ckul, and Oneiros were just a few of those names. But he almost always went by simply Dream. He didn't really see the point of going by any other name nor hiding who he truly was. Most people didn't really believe him when he told them anyway.
"Hm, this place can be rather capricious, can it?" It was one of the things he hated most about it. Dream was used to things being in order, being predictable. The Dome made it so that it was hard for even him to figure out what will happen next. "Hopefully the weather will stay nice from now on." He could easily manipulate the weather in the Dreaming, but in reality? He could do a lot, but he couldn't really manipulate anything here.
"I'm doing fine, thank you. Decided to get out and enjoy a quick walk before I head back to the Dreaming and do my duties."
***
“I do not like the unpredictability here,” he admitted. “Unpredictability is fine in small doses, but this place does not seem to like small doses of anything.” Wednesday could be unpredictable himself, but for the most part? He liked to be able to know what was going to happen, and when.
He arched an eyebrow at Dream for a moment, “Never a moment’s rest from work, is there?” He understood that people here dreamed as well, so the man he was speaking with likely didn’t get much of a break from his duties.
“But it’s good to be able to get out. Even for a short while.”
***
"Neither do I," Dream replied. "I never did like when things are unpredictable. I very much prefer to know what's going to happen." Though he didn't mind too much when it came to dreams. They did change and shift often after all. But even then, he still didn't like it much.
"Not really, no." He probably could leave things be for awhile, and sometimes he had, and the Dreaming would be fine. But he still liked to keep an eye on things. And he was one of the few of the Endless who took their duties seriously.
"My sister would agree with that. She's always trying to get me to go out a bit more." Sometimes he listened to her, sometimes he didn't.
***
“Do you listen to your sister often?” he asked. He had a feeling that Dream was the type who didn’t really like to listen to others often. Not that Wednesday blamed him in the slightest. Because he was the type who didn’t like to listen to others often, either. That was just how he was. It was part of being one of the Old Gods. Gods didn’t like to take advice from others, even other gods.
“Getting out every once in a while is a good thing. Or, at least, it can be.” Personally, he only liked to get out when he wanted to get out. If someone tried to force him to go out more often? He’d likely ignore their suggestion and stay inside even more.
He shrugged slightly, “But only if you want to. I am not one to tell you what to do. I know I don’t like being told what to do myself.” Then, after a moment, “Any interesting dreams lately?”
***
"To be honest, not too often. But she is the only one of my siblings that I listen to." He trusted Death more than anyone and often went to her for advice. Though sometimes he didn't agree with what she said, even if it was true, and became the petulant little brother who ignored her advice. But she was one of the very few in all of existence that he listened to.
"It's not so bad," he nodded. He certainly wouldn't have met Setsuna had he not listened to his sister and went out to introduce himself to her. "Not really, no. But I've seen a lot of dreams, so they're probably not all that interesting to me."
***
“The only one? I’m sure that makes her feel honored. Or something,” he said, smiling slightly. “At least you listen to her sometimes.” Sometimes was better than nothing. Sometimes was probably more than Wednesday listened to people, honestly. But he was trying, for the most part. Usually.
He nodded in response to Dream’s words, “I suppose they’re probably not, with as many as you’ve seen.” Dreams could be interesting, but only if you haven’t seen a lot of them. Wednesday didn’t dream much himself, so he considered them to be somewhat interesting.
“Don’t they get tiring after a while?”
***
"She's the only one who makes the most sense. Delirium certainly doesn't. Destiny doesn't tell anyone anything, and the rest I just simply ignore." Especially Desire and Destruction. He and Desire had their problems with each other and he just left it at that. And Destruction, well, he left his duties which Dream completely disagreed with.
"They do, but they're still dreams. Dreams can shift and change and once in awhile, that's what happens. A dream can be the same as it always is, then change into something completely different in a moment."
***
Wednesday understood that dreams could change from time to time. One could have the same dream over and over again, then find the next time it is completely different. That’s how dreams were, really. “I understand that,” he said, after a moment. “So while they can get tiring and repetitive, sometimes they can change it up on you.”
He decided he was glad Dream had approached him today. It was nice to have someone to talk to, and he hadn’t spoken to Dream much while here.
“Death does seem like the most reasonable of your siblings,” he decided. “So it might be wise to listen to her from time to time.”
***
"Exactly," Dream nodded. "Though I do have to make sure that is what it is and not a dream or nightmare going rogue on me." It's happened sometimes. Like The Corinthian and Brute and Glob, who pretty much disobeyed him and he had to destroy them or send them to the darkness. He did, however, created a new, much improved Corinthian at least.
"She is. She's certainly the one who's reasoning I can follow the best. I'm sure my youngest sister does, but since she is Delirium, I cannot understand how her mind works at all." Her way of thinking was all over the place while Dream's way was more straight and to the point.
***
“Do they go rogue on you often? I suppose not, if you say that they’re usually repetitive and tiring.” He supposed he wouldn’t mind an occasional dream going rogue on him, if he was the one in Dream’s position. And least that would make things a bit interesting, an occasional rogue dream. And Wednesday did like to keep things interesting from time to time.
Which is why he didn’t mind Madison Valley’s shenanigans. It kept the place from being too terribly dull. That wasn’t to say it wasn’t dull from time to time, though.
“I do not believe I would be able to understand how Delirium’s mind works, either,” he admitted.
***
"No, not too often, but it happens from time to time." Dream kept a good eye on things, making sure the Dreaming worked as it should. But every once in awhile, things didn't go as they should but he was usually able to fix it no problem.
"I don't think anyone really can. Even if she explained it as best she could, we still probably wouldn't understand her."
***
“Are we even sure Delirium knows how her mind works?” he asked with a smile. He hadn’t really spoken to Delirium while she had been in town, but he knew enough about her to have that be a fair question.
And he had an idea that Dream had enough control over what happened in dreaming for the shenanigans to not happen very frequently. Though he knew that things did tend to happen, despite how good of control a person had.
“Perhaps I should let you get back to dreaming, then,” he offered.
***
"Of course she does. She is Delirium after all. She is, in a way, delirium itself." Just as he was dreams themselves and Death was death itself and so on. Delirium had the best understanding of her own mind, even if she might not seem like it.
"But yes, I really should get back." He didn't like being away from his duties for too long. "Perhaps we should talk another time, but until then." He gave Wednesday a quick nod before disappearing.
