Alex knew she was in trouble. She tried to hide it for so long from everyone, including herself. Throughout the last few weeks after Pietro had gone home, Alex told herself she was fine even when she wondered if it would hurt to take a sip of alcohol or take something stronger than Advil for pain. She never did, usually brushing it off and moving on.
It wasn't until the clinic visit a few days ago that she knew it was worse than she thought. Sure, she hurt her shoulder during a sparring session, but she'd done that so many times in her life. It was the kind of thing she could easily push through. She'd gone there hoping to score something strong to end her physical pain, when in reality, it was her emotional pain she wanted to push away. Talking to Adam and learning what Katie was going through made her realize that she, too, was hurting more than she let on. She left the clinic that night without any pills, but she was scared at how close she came to begging for a prescription.
She needed to talk to someone who understood, someone like Sara's sister. She didn't know Laurel well, but she trusted Sara. If Sara said Laurel was a good person to talk to, that was enough for her. She knew she could always go to Nikita, too, and she would definitely lean on her, but right now, she wanted to talk to someone who didn't know much about her past.
Once Sara had made introductions, she decided to quietly leave Alex and Laurel to talk alone.
"Thank you for stopping by," she said sincerely, though with a touch of awkwardness.
This was a big step for Alex.
