WHO: Will Herondale and Zatanna WHAT: Dinner and conversation WHEN: One night this week WHERE: Will's apartment WARNINGS: PG for saccarrine sweetness STATUS: Closed/Complete
Zatanna has made a rather nice dinner of eggplant parmesan, with a chicken parmesan for Will, then headed over to his place with it. She let herself in, not worried about bothering him, “I come bearing food!” She called out as she set his kitchen table.
“I didn't think you wanted what I was eating so I made something for you.” She tacked on as she went to get glasses for drinks. She'd obviously used a portal to get here since she was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and black shorts, not March in Madison Valley clothing.
Blue eyes glittered as she rested her hands on her hips, satisfied with what things looked like. Then she paused and waved a hand, muttering, as she changed the lighting to look softer. Now she was happy.
Will’s eyes followed her as she moved. He was stretched out on the sofa, reading. He was deep into Henry the VIII and was starting to get cross-eyed from trying to enjoy the play. Some things about Shakespeare were delightful, but his tragedies were not always one of them. At least not after you’d already read 5 of them.
But Zee provided the perfect interruption. He marked his space and stood. He raised his hands above his head and stretched out, loosening his muscles which had tensed from the concentration on reading. “You’re clearly the world’s most caring girlfriend - knowing that Shakespeare had claimed my brain and it needed some relief.”
Moving to the table where Zee was standing, Will wrapped his arms around her from behind and rested his chin on her shoulder. “You’re amazing,” he whispered, kissing her neck gently.
*** Zee smiled as he got up and wrapped his arms around her. She leaned back against him, eyes closed. She loved this. This was perfect. “I happily claim that title. I was worried you'd end up like me when I start reading my tomes and forget to do things like eat.”
She didn't move yet, content. Sometimes she wasn't sure how she got so lucky. Part of her missed the ebb and flow of her relationship with Constantine, that chaotic mess was addicting. She couldn't deny that she was, had been, addicted to it. But this was a different kind of relationship and she found she loved it just as much.
“You're good to me, Will, of course I'll return that favor as long as I can.” She reached up and back to run her fingers over his face.
The touch was soft and gentle and Will leaned into it. Everything about it made him feel like he was at home - like finally he’d come out the other side of the darkness that had enwrapped him since Jem and Tessa left. He could finally think about them without allowing himself to fall into a puddle of helpless emotion. Will still missed them and missed them deeply, but that would always be there. There was no need to wallow in it. Zee had finally taught him that lesson.
His smile creased his cheeks and he knew she’d be able to feel it against the touch of her fingers. “So what deliciousness did you bring to share this evening?” he inquired, arms still around her waist as he looked at the dinner. “You’ve clearly been busy.”
*** She was in a good place finally..it had taken a lot of bad choices but she was finally happy. And content. Things were going well, even if she was paranoid that that meant it would break. But she didn't give that worry voice.
“Chicken parmesan for you and eggplant for me.” She smiled, she didn't mind cooking two meals. It worked out in the end. She was glad he didn't mind the extras time, either, because she had caved once for a steak and regretted it. “I hope it is okay with you?”
“Sounds delicious,” Will said giving her another kiss before escorting her to one of the seats at the table. He held it out for her and allowed her to settle into the seat before he gently pushed the chair in. Once he was certain she was content and ready to eat, he moved around to his seat and sat down in the chair across from her.
“So any special reason to celebrate or are we celebrating normalcy?” he inquired, looking at his plate with appreciation, eager to give in.
*** Zee laughed softly, “no, just normalcy. I figured a nice dinner would be called for. It isn't anything special. I thought it would be nice.” She smiled across to him.
Normal. She hadn't really ever been normal. This was a nice change of pace. “You now, you haven't really told me much about your home.” She noted as she picked up her fork.
“Are you saying we won’t achieve normalcy?” Will inquired, picking up his knife and fork following putting his napkin across his lap. “Perhaps we should celebrate that some day we might be normal.” He grinned as he cut into the chicken, the sauce and cheese oozing over the chicken.
“Home,” Will said as he ate his first delicious bite and gave a groan of pleasure. “And I can definitely do that. But I have to ask, which home? My family - where I ran away from at 11 or the institute that I consider my family.”
*** “Look, I’ll never be normal and I’m perfectly okay with that.” she laughed softly as she brushed her hair back before taking a bit and smiling. “I don’t really want to be normal, which is also fine with me.” Zee smirked.
“Home - the one you feel that’s really home, not the one you left behind.” she leaned forward, “Because we may be together, and we’ve been friends awhile, but I think we’re both kind of mysteries still to the other. I’d like to correct that.”
“I suppose being normal is rather overrated,” Will said with a laugh, digging further into the delicious food. The chicken was moist and the tomato sauce had enough spice to make appreciate the heat offered to make sure the cheese cooled cooled off his palate.
Will nodded, agreeing with her statement. “I have to admit that being a mystery has some appeal,” he teased and then grinned as he added, “My home will always be the institute. Everything about it is soothing. There are lots of books and places to train and explore. The people there always welcomed me without question. When you’re an energetic boy with more energy than sense, it is ideal to keep you busy and always with something to do.”
***
Zee laughed, “Yes, it is.” she took another bite of hers and sighed happily. She took a drink of water after, and smiled a bit, nodding. She enjoyed the place they were in, it was a comfortable once. She found she liked that.
“It does and I’m not asking for every secret.” she winked and leaned back once more. “Sounds like a great place, then. And I can imagine it took a lot to keep you busy. What was it like?” she asked as she looked over at him.
Will ate a bit more of his chicken as he thought about how to answer her question. “For the first time, when I showed up there, I finally felt like I belonged, that I had a purpose,” Will mused, remembering how glad he had felt when the institute opened its doors to him. Everything about it had made a difference to him and his life. “When they started talking about demon killing and why, it was like everything made sense.”
Finishing off another bite of the food, Will leaned back. “I was like a pig in mud - covering myself from head to toe in information. I loved every moment - learning how to kill different demons and downworlders. There was always a new challenge to explore. That and the people there…” Will smiled with pleasure at the memory.
*** Zee nibbled on her food while she listened to him with rapt attention. “Belonging.” she said softly, “That must have been wonderful to feel.” she set her fork down and leaned her head into her hand. She smiled up at him, “I am glad you found a place to belong.”
She laughed at the image. “I am imagining you rolling in a library with books everywhere and paper.” she smirked again then nodded. “The people were better family?” she asked with a head tilt.
“Family was good, but I always felt like there was something they weren’t telling me and when I found the Institute, I knew precisely what they were hiding,” Will shook his head at the memory. “They didn’t want anything to do with the life any further, but to me it was all about purpose. The chance to protect those that I loved and cared for. And maybe find the solution to what I was facing - having been cursed by a demon.” He shook his head slightly at the memory of his own ignorance of what that meant.
The mental image she shared made him laugh out loud. “That pretty much described me. I was always looking for something new to read or explore. I had quite a treasure trove of books in my room. Chances are when a book went missing, it was in my room. People started assuming that I kidnapped every spare book I could find.”
*** Zee smiled a touch, “I can imagine.” she said after a moment, blue eyes closing for a moment, wishing for a silent moment she’d had something like that. She mentally shook it off and tilted her head a bit. “I can picture you being happy to have found a purpose, and a reason for things.” she said carefully.
“I am sure you did. You liberated them from their dusty shelves, after all.” she grinned widely at him. She liked thinking about him running around with books up to the ceiling and so on. It was a nice mental image.’
***
“No one else was reading them so I felt it was important that I make sure that they were opened and enjoyed,” Will said, remembering how frustrating everyone had found his voracious reading habit. “My room was mostly a bed and stacks of books. It was like opening a whole new world.”
Will reflected back on the time when he arrived at the institute. “It was an amazing time. It’s where I met Jem. It was like finding that other half of yourself - my parabati. It was that person that I met and you have an instant connection with. Someone who would always stand beside you and make things better. I do love a good purpose for life.”
*** She arched a brow, “is that how that works?” She said as she took another bite and smiled, “that's pretty neat, really.” Zee twitched her lips into a smile, “Books can be an escape into many, many worlds. They are really amazing things.” she said with honesty.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt like that about anyone. I mean, I have always felt that part of my soul was tied to someone elses, but it wasn’t quite that kind of feeling.” she said with a shrug, though she wasn’t sure if it was even close. Probably not.
“I think its the escape that I like about them the most,” Will said, considering his love of the printed language. “Most people are surprised at how much I read. I just can’t imagine how one idles away time without a good book to read.” Will shook his head slightly. “And there is all this knowledge out there to collect. How do you get it without reading?!”
“I’m sorry you’ve never felt it,” Will said, finishing his food and pushing aside the plate in front of him and resting his elbows on the table. “Finding your parabati doesn’t have words. It’s like having your soul woven together with someone else’s. That sounds corny, but there aren’t really even words for how amazing it is.”
*** Zatanna smiled, “I love books, you don’t need to explain to me. I love books. I love reading. Though I am picky. I love my tomes full of old spells and interesting lore. Having spent so much time with Constantine, I’ve picked up knowledge from that.” she smiled a bit more.
“Don’t be.” she waved a hand lightly, “I think to a degree, I know what it ‘sort’ of feels like.” she paused and leaned back a bit. “I suppose the closest would be my ties to John, they go deeper than the surface and so on, and so much has happened that he could try to kill me again and I’d still try to help him.” she smiled a bit.
“Kindred spirits!” Will cried with delight, winking at her. “People hide wonderful things in books. You just have to be willing to dig a little. If I ever got a chance to go back to my time, I’d love to spend time just gathering information and cataloguing all the knowledge built into the institute so that the information is not lost through the ge beoreneration. Someone has to take care of it.”
Reaching out, Will took her hand and squeezed gently, just to let her know he was still here with her and he’d stand between her and herself if needed. “Same thing if it was Jem. It’s so hard - like a part of you is torn out when your body is forced to adjust in such a way. Some days it is a powerful support, and some days,” Will paused and shook his head, his hand rubbing across his heart as he added, “it’s like ripping out your soul.”
*** She laughed, “Yes, well, I think we well established that one.” she winked at him and smiled. “Books are such useful things.” she smiled, “I hope you get the chance to save them sometime, and build a better bastion of knowledge.”
She returned his squeeze, “Yeah, that. I don’t know. I’ve never stopped to think about it before?” she shrugged a little, lifting his hand to kiss his knuckles. “It’s the best and worst feeling all at the same time. I wouldn’t trade what he and I have, and had, for anything. It was… something I needed in my life. Though I think I could be happy to have him not try to kill me again. That was not fun.” she laughed.
“Sorry.”
“Some day,” Will said with a grin, “but first I have to get Madison Valley all fit and read all the books available here. Someone has to make sure none of the books get left behind.”
Will smiled at her, appreciating her strength. “And we need those experiences to know what is good in life so that we can build a better life. It’s why we have those things. No matter what, we need the lesson so we can move forward and find out own futures.”
Leaning back now in his chair, Will grinned. “So, what’s for dessert?”
*** “Oh lord, you’ll be busy at that for decades, Will. Have you met half this town?” she arched a brow, laughing. “No, no book left behind!” she said as she laughed. She finished off her food and laughed at him, choosing to not go further down that road tonight. She was bound to have a nightmare or six and she didn’t particularly want them.
“Who said I brought dessert?” she blinked at him innocently.
***
“I think we should somehow combine books and Training Terrain,” Will commented, musing on the idea, leaning back and rocking the chair slightly as he pondered the idea. “There should be something that would work to get people to find the enjoyment in both.”
Hopefully him presenting a problem would make sure she thought of something other than the darkness woven into her past.
“You know me. How could you not bring dessert?” he inquired, leaning on the table, looking decidedly eager.
*** Slender fingers tapped on the table. “Yes, that could be fun. Mental puzzles.” she said thoughtfully as she looked up at him again. “Mental puzzles can be just as satisfying as physical ones.” she was amused at the idea, not sure how it would work but…
That never stopped her.
“I do, in fact, know you.” she laughed,

That never stopped her.
“I do, in fact, know you.” she laughed, <a title=”open the pocket space and bring me the dessert”>“terssed eht em gnirb dna ecaps tekcop eht nepo”, reaching in and pulling out a fresh baked pecan pie.

“Something related to if you’ve read this book, you can solve this,” Will pondered outloud as he considered the idea. He really wanted to make it work. Somehow there was a combination that made the two came together. “We’ll figure it out.”
The sound of the spell and the appearance of the pie made Will smile broadly. He knew there was dessert. Zee never let him down - she knew about his sweet tooth! “Now that looks delicious!” he commented, rubbing his hands together with pleasure.
*** “It is. I think we'll manage. It'll be good,I promise.” She ran a finger over her arm, then handed him the pie. “Enjoy, I know you and I know your sweet tooth.”
“I wouldn't forget you and your sweet tooth, don't worry.” She grinned a bit as she sat back.

Will immediately cut himself a rather large slice and slid it onto his plate. He was about to dig in when he stopped and looked up at Zee. “Do you want some?” he asked, realising he was being a bit rude at taking a piece without offering her some.
*** She laughed softly as she leaned back, “no I'm fine. Thank you, though.” Slender fingers waved using magic to collect the dishes and pile them up for washing.
Blue eyes watching him lazily, content to be here.
***
“Just take it away before I eat the whole thing,” Will directed, digging into his fork into his piece and eating a large first bite. His eyes closed with pleasure as he savoured the taste. Yeah, life was very good.
