WHO: Rey and Hiccup Haddock.
WHAT: Meeting the Dragons.
WHERE: Near the woods
WHEN: Today, afternoon.
WARNINGS: TBD.
STATUS: Closed | Match Up | In Progress.

People thought Rey was strange for enjoying the cold weather, most people seemed to hate it but so far she still liked it. From what she'd heard it wouldn't last too much longer so she'd decided to go out for a walk and enjoy it while she could. While she liked the cold she wasn't going to go out without wrapping up, she wore a scarf and gloves as well as a coat because she didn't want to freeze.

Normally she walked through town before going home, today she'd decided to go a little further out. She hadn't been out to the woods for a while, she'd been a bit too busy with things to do so but today she had the time. The air was crisp, causing her breath to fog as she exhaled. The ground was firm under foot but not frozen so she was walking at a fairly steady pace.

In no time at all she was close to the woods, it was quiet out here but that's why she liked it. She could just enjoy the peace and quiet and focus her thoughts, something she liked to do from time to time. She didn't think there was anyone else out here until she heard a noise coming from the trees. Whatever it was sounded big and against her better judgement she walked towards the sound rather than away from it. "Hello?" she called out, wondering if it might have been one of the werewolves that lived in Madison though she didn't think they'd be able to respond if they were in their wolf form so calling out might have been pointless, still she'd done it and kept walking towards the sounds.

[ooc: sorry for the delay!]

Whenever he wasn't at work or spending time with Tefe and Erik and Aurie, Hiccup was out in the woods with the dragons. He missed living with them day in and day out so he tried to make up for it by seeing them as often as he could. It would be more ideal if he could figure out a way to live with them while also enjoying all the modern conveniences that Madison had to offer. Hiccup just wasn't sure exactly what that compromise was going to look like just yet, but he thought about it every day.

They were just horsing around mostly, in one of the wide open spaces that was near the edge of the woods. Most people these days were okay with the dragons, and the portal to Berk, which had happened so long ago, had helped too. Now, when someone got curious and came across them, Hiccup didn't shy away.

"Hey, hi!" he greeted, the three of them appearing from behind a few trees. "We got kind of close to the edge there, guys." Hiccup gave Toothless a mock stern look and he promptly turned around to look at Stormfly as if it wasn't his fault they'd strayed a bit further than Hiccup had intended.

"Sorry, we didn't mean to bother you."

Rey was sort of aware there were some animals here from other worlds but she'd never actively sought them out. That didn't mean she wasn't curious about them, just that she hadn't found the time to go and see them. There was also the fact that she didn't want to seem rude, it probably got tiring to be constantly bothered about things from your home world.

When someone walked out of the trees with two animals behind him she stopped in her tracks. "Hi," she said back, even though she'd been the one to call out in the first place. Her eyes were on the two animals behind him, they were beautiful and unlike anything she'd seen before.

"Oh, you didn't bother me. I just heard something moving in the trees and thought maybe it was one of the werewolves." She turned her attention back to the man and smiled at him. "Don't ask me why I called out if I thought it was a werewolf, I don't know why I did."

She kept glancing at the two creatures, fascinated by them. "I'm Rey," she said, stepping a little closer towards them. She'd been trying to remember what animals she'd seen people talking about and finally managed to pull it from her memory. "They're dragons, aren't they? Are they friendly?"

"It's probably more likely that you'd run into one of the Pack," Hiccup agreed. He tried to give them space though, since they were a well respected, well regarded family in the community. The last thing he wanted was to upset or disrespect them. "And they do understand. Toothless and Stormfly do, to some extent. Not in the same way, but enough." He talked to the animals at the shelter all the time, so he definitely didn't think any less of her for it.

"Hiccup, and that's Toothless and that's Stormfly." He gestured to each of them in turn as he introduced them. "They are." A beat and then, "Dragons I mean. And friendly, too." More so now that they'd spent a good amount of time in Madison Valley. There weren't many dangers lurking in strangers these days, and they knew how to spot the more deadly of people. Rey didn't seem very much like the sort who killed indiscriminately.

He sort of jerked his head a bit to Toothless, who took a step forward toward her. "Just put your hand up, and let him come to you, if you want." Toothless stopped a few feet away from her and sat on his haunches, waiting to see if she'd put her hand out or not. If she did, he'd walk toward her to sniff her and then put his nose against her hand.

"I've never run into one of them in wolf form yet," she admitted. Again it was something she was curious about but it seemed like it might be rude to just ask one of them to show her. "I talk to my porg, I don't know if she understands me or not. I don't think she does because when I tell her to be quiet she continues to shriek. Not the same thing at all as talking to a werewolf or a dragon I imagine." Of course it was entirely possible that the porg was responding, she didn't think that was the case though.

Rey smiled as Hiccup introduced himself and the dragons. "Nice to meet you all," she said, smiling a little more. Back home she'd seen plenty of animals that people used for transport, the dragons were like none of them. Rey could tell just by looking at them that they were intelligent animals, not beasts of burden or anything like that.

When Toothless stepped forwards Rey practically grinned. She followed Hiccup's instructions and put her hand up, holding it out for Toothless. The moment she did she saw the dragon start moving. She kept still and let him sniff her hand and then he put his nose against her hand. She was almost speechless, for a second she didn't do anything at all but then she moved her hand, gently stroking his nose. "Is this okay?" she asked, not wanting to scare Toothless or do anything wrong.

Hiccup stayed quiet as Toothless interacted with Rey. It was always a moment of bated breath to see what would happen, but it was as it always was and he deemed her safe to interact with. Once Toothless gave his approval, Stormfly knew it was also safe and stepped forward, just close enough to sniff at this new person.

"It's alright," he assured Rey when she as if what she was doing was okay. "Just stick to his snout for now. Anywhere else and it's more...for when you know them more than just first meeting." Hiccup was doing his best to be more trusting of people but there was still a certain amount of needing to control the situation. The smallest of things could set the dragons off, although maybe that was just him being a worrywart.

After a moment he asked, "What's a porg?"

Rey was in awe, Toothless was even more impressive up close than he had been from afar. She felt blessed to be granted permission from the dragon to touch him. When Stormfly joined them Rey made sure to let the dragons do as they wanted and didn't make any sudden movements, she didn't want to startle them.

With the assurance from Hiccup she kept up what she was doing, sticking to his snout. "Okay," she said, not taking her attention off of Toothless in front of her. She kept her touch gentle. Rey might not have had much experience with animals before Madison but after the porg had shown up she'd had to learn and had done plenty of reading on caring for animals. She was using everything she'd learned now.

She took her hand back, letting it fall to her side so she could turn her attention to Hiccup. "It's like a bird, at least that's the closest thing I've read about. They're from an isolated island that I visited back home and one of them showed up here after that countdown clock stuff during the summer."

Toothless let Rey scratch his scales for a bit longer, shifting his head a little when he wanted her to change positions. When she let her hand fall to her side, scratches were over and they could go back to playing. Toothless made a sort of rumbly sound and he and Stormfly bounded back into the woods.

Hiccup watched them go, debating whether or not to follow, and decided he could stay and talk to Rey for a little bit. They'd be fine for a little while and he was curious about these creatures from her world. Birdlike sounded interesting to someone who dealt mostly with cats and dogs these days.

"The dragons appeared then, too," he replied, glad that he wasn't the only one. "The Porg must be important to you, to have appeared then." Hiccup liked the idea that they got things that were important to them sometimes. From his understanding, that had been the first time it had been a mass sort of thing, but still. It was good.

Rey smiled at the sound Toothless made before the two dragons bounded off into the woods. She couldn't stop smiling, the experience leaving her in awe. That something so powerful could be so gentle and it had seemed as if Toothless had enjoyed the attention but she couldn't be sure because she didn't know them really.

When the dragons were out of sight she looked back to see Hiccup was still standing there. She gave him a smile, she had so many questions about the dragons and where they came from. But he probably got those all the time, she didn't want to be rude and make him think the only thing she was interested in was his dragons.

"I'm not sure I'd say the porg is important. Though the island they live on was where I learned a lot about myself and the Force so I guess in some ways you could say she is. And we ended up with a few on the Falcon when we left. She's a reminder of home." She'd never thought about it like that before but it made sense. "She wasn't too fond of being inside at first but she's gotten used to it now. And thankfully the walls are thick enough that she doesn't disturb my neighbors when she starts being noisy."

It might not be that the specific porg she had was important, but it was clear that the memories she associated with the create were very important to her. Hiccup smiled at the explanation. "I'm grateful that I have the dragons, and that the rest of the town has allowed them to live in the forest relatively undisturbed," he admitted. It was something he was always going to worry about, though.

"I'm sure you have questions about the dragons," he added, recognizing that everyone had them and she'd probably be no exception to that. Hiccup gave her a warm, encouraging smile. "I'd be happy to answer them for a few minutes. They should be pretty well occupied for a little while." He liked educating people, because the more they knew, the less afraid they might be.

It really never had occurred to Rey that the porg or rather what she represented was important to her until now. "You clearly care about them a lot. I'm glad you've got them here with you." It didn't take a genius to see that he cared a great deal about them. She could see why, they were special animals.

"I do actually, I didn't want to ask though because I didn't want you to think I only cared about them," Rey said, her own smile matching his. "As long as I'm not keeping you from anything I'd love to learn more about them. And if you ever want to meet my porg I'm sure we could arrange something." Maybe Hiccup would even have some tips on how to make her life better.
