Who: Phoebe Halliwell and Emma Carstairs
Where: Galatea's Art Supplies
When: Snow Day
What: Phoebe and Emma get snowed in
Status: Complete, Closed
It hadn’t been snowing when Emma stepped into the art supply store to look for an absolutely-not-for-Valentine’s-Day present for Julian. In fact, it had even felt a little balmy for this time of year. But within several minutes of her going in, the big, fluffy white puffs started falling from the sky, and soon the snow was falling down so fast and thick that she could barely see several feet outside the window.
Emma looked on, dismayed. Being an LA girl, she was still not used to cold weather in general. Although she’d bundled up for the midwest winter, she hadn’t counted on the snow, which hadn’t been in the forecast. And even if she could cast a warming rune on herself - which she could - it would be a hard slog through the snow.
“Think it’s going to let up any time soon?” she asked of the dark-haired woman who’d come up beside her.

Emma was definitely not the only one to be caught unawares by the sudden weather, though for a witch whose primary power was premonition, this was a little embarrassing. Phoebe had gone to the art store to pick up a few things for herself and consider asking about a job, but the sudden change had her looking towards the window, and she walked over to marvel at the freak blizzard that seemed to have settled over Madison Valley.
“We can only hope that it does, to be honest. Hopefully it will and we can get out of here without too much trouble.” If that didn’t happen, well - she could always call her nephew to orb over.

“This definitely wouldn’t have happened in LA,” Emma muttered. Although to be fair, the wild swing from flooding rain to snowstorm probably wouldn’t have happened in a lot of other places either.
Since there wasn’t much she could do about it at the time, she settled back - and took a closer look at the woman beside her. She looked vaguely familiar, and it took Emma a moment to figure it out. Maybe.
“Hey...weird question. Are you one of Chris’s aunts?”
***
“Or San Francisco,” Phoebe chimed in with a smile, though strange weather had sometimes occurred - usually a result of some spell - but they’d never had a snowstorm.
At the question, Phoebe returned her attention to the blonde and blinked after a moment in recognition. “Oh, you must be Emma! Yes, I’m one of his aunts. Phoebe Halliwell, nice to meet you in person,” she said, holding out her hand to shake the girl’s.
***
Emma returned the handshake firmly. “Hi!” she chirped, and then took a closer look at the woman. “You’re a lot younger than I thought you’d be.”
Unless witches - like warlocks - aged really well. Which wouldn’t surprise her. She thought of Tessa Carstairs, who was well over 150 and still looked about Emma’s own age.
“Thanks, by the way,” she added. “For agreeing to help me.”
***
Phoebe had to grin at that, giving a small laugh. “Well thanks, I appreciate that. Part of the reason, though, is because Christopher is from a couple decades in our future. At the point in time I’m from, my sister is pregnant with him, actually.”
At the thanks, she gave a softer smile and squeezed Emma’s hand gently before letting it go. “Of course. You know, since we have this time together, we could talk more about it. And then whenever we’re ready we can call Chris and he can orb us to our homes. Do you have any questions for me, since you’re trusting my sisters and I with helping the two of you?”
***
“Oh yeah, he did mention that.” The whole time slip thing was still confusing to Emma. She tried not to think too deeply into it, to save herself a headache.
Instead, she thought about what she knew of the Halliwells and how they could possibly help her. She wasn’t convinced they could, but she was desperate enough to try.
“Where does the source of your powers come from?” She looked at Phoebe curiously. “Because where I come from, warlock magic comes from demonic origins, and that’s kind of controversial whenever we work with them.”
***
As far as questions went, it was a good one to start with, and she gave Emma a small smile before she replied.
“In our world, warlock magic is the same way, but my sisters and I are witches. There’s a very strong difference between the two. Our powers come from our blood, from our family. We’re the most recent in a long line of Halliwell witches stretching back more than 300 years, and we’re known as the Charmed Ones - the most powerful good witches in our world.”
***
There were no witches in Emma’s world, but she’d watched enough movies to understand what Phoebe was saying.
She nodded, feeling a little better about it. Julian might still have a problem with using witch magic to solve their problem, but he didn’t have to know about it until the curse was ready to be broken, at which time he likely won’t be saying no anyway.
“Have you done anything like this before?” Emma asked. “Break an angelic curse, that is.”
***
“We have, yeah, actually.” Phoebe wasn’t really sure how much Piper would want her to talk about this, but figured that if it might help Emma, then….it couldn’t hurt. “As a matter of fact, we had a sort of similar situation. In our world, angels are called Whitelighters. They protect and guide good people, as well as witches. We shared one, and well...one of us actually fell in love with him. Of course, Whitelighters were forbidden to have relationships like that with their charges, but he fell in love with her and...eventually the two of them managed to be together.”
She gave Emma a smile and reached out to touch the girl’s hand reassuringly. “So it can happen. And it will as long as you have faith and we all work with that goal in mind. The rest is just details.”
***
Emma nodded. Chris had told her about his parents; she assumed that was who Phoebe was talking about.
“Was it actually a curse they had to deal with?” she asked. “Or just a really stupid rule? Because mine involves going crazy and destroying everything and everyone I ever loved, so the stakes are a little high here.”
***
“It was mostly a stupid rule, but there were some threats of doom and gloom if they broke it. But we have gone up against curses before. Sometimes caused by a person or an object, sometimes a bit more...mystical than that, even.” Phoebe gave another smile.
“We’ll figure it out, Emma. Now, whad’ya say I call Chris and he orbs us out of this place?”
***
While Emma still wasn’t sure how they were going to figure it out - or even if it was possible - she did felt better knowing there were people on her and Julian’s side. Back home, it was so taboo they hadn’t dared to tell anyone else.
“Sounds good,” she said, smiling back. “Let’s get out of here.”
