Amaar had made it a rule for Layla, since she’d come to Madison Valley, that she didn’t need to return to school after salat al-jumu‘ah on Fridays. It had been the one prayer his parents had observed when he was growing up, and he’d had to leave for a few hours and go back for last block when he was her age. And he figured it was better if she just missed an afternoon. He’d been sure to arrange it with the school, told them it was a good religious practice and they hadn’t known any better.
It wasn’t technically a lie, since she did stay at the mosque if she wasn’t going back to school. The one condition he’d had.
Prayer had finished a while ago, and Amaar had stayed in the prayer hall, seated on the floor going through some papers while Layla worked on what he could only hope was homework. He didn’t want to press too much to ask though. He hadn’t heard about her grades suffering and he couldn’t bring himself to be as pushy about those as Baber. So until he heard otherwise, Amaar was just trusting. And hoping that was for the best.
