Emma and Julian
Julian looked up at her sharply, his eyes on fire. How did she not understand that he didn’t keep things from her for fun, or to annoy her, but because he had to? He didn’t have a choice in the matter. The truth and nothing but the truth was a nice concept, but unrealistic. Everyone had something to hide. And in Julian’s case, they were secrets that could tear apart his family and his world.
“Don’t.” He said. “Don’t start with me. You think it’s okay to tell everyone everything, but it’s not. It’s not okay. It can hurt people, like it would hurt Alex. And why do that? Why make him suffer when he’ll just forget it when he goes home and have to suffer again? Or what if I’d told the Clave that my uncle was insane, Emma? They would have torn us all out of LA and sent us to different corners of the world. What would that have done to us? To Ty? To Tavvy? It’s nice to think that having secrets is a bad thing but it isn’t always. Because when you know something, you can’t ever forget and you have to face the consequences. Would it have made us any happier if I’d told you I was in love with you before I turned thirteen? No. It just would have hurt us more.”
