That tiny slip in Julian's verbage was all he needed. He might try and come off cold and threatening when he was worried. That didn't mean he was either of those things. At least, not exclusively. "I'm sorry," he said softly, understanding in his voice. Chris had seen his own share of loss. Having to keep going after it, especially in a world where people or things wanted you dead? "Sounds like that was pretty recent." The opening was there if Julian wanted to talk about it and if he didn't, it was completely acceptable to end the conversation there.
"We may not want them here, but it's good to know they're taken care of if they showed up." He didn't know much about their demons. He did know the ones in his own world could range from mild to terrifying. But he felt pretty good about their chances, especially with the wide range of people he'd met so far in this city.
He smiled when the list included both something dangerous and daring like a dagger and something beautiful and whimsical like a bracelet. It did seem to sum up the girl he'd been talking to well. "Well, I don't know what kind of books they have here, but they probably do have daggers. And I know they have bracelets. You can probably find one or two things she'd like here."
