WARNINGS: Language, TBD
STATUS: Started in Gdocs, continuing in comments
Isak had woken up to some really strange noises coming from the living room. At first, he thought he'd left the tv on. That certainly would explain the voice he was hearing. After all, why would a little girl be doing in his apartment? So he just figured it was the tv and he just rolled back over and tried to go to sleep.
Turns out, it wasn't the tv, but there actually was a little girl in his apartment. And apparently, she was his daughter and also Ian's. Which at this point, didn't really surprise him. The Dome always seem to put them together somehow. But he was still a bit shocked about them having a kid together.
He called Ian up and they arranged to meet at Hinkles. He was hungry and he figured he should feed the kid too, so it seemed like a good place to meet. Both he and the little girl made their way to the diner, finding a seat and ordering food while they waited for Ian to arrive.
***
Ian didn’t know what to make of it when he got the call from Isak. Sure, crazy things happened here, but what he was saying was biologically impossible. There was no way he could have a kid with another guy, unless she was adopted, and why on earth would him and Isak adopt a kid? It made no sense. But of course he wanted to figure out what was going on, so he agreed to meet Isak and rode his bike into town to Hinkles.
When he got there Isak was already sitting in a booth with cute little girl who looked like she was maybe around six. Ian slid into the seat across from them and introduced himself. “Hi, I’m Ian. What’s your name?”
“Daddy!” The little girl cried and jumped up from hear seat, coming around the table and hugging him. “Where have you been, Daddy? Papa already ordered me a milkshake.”
Ian looked across the table helplessly at Isak, with a ‘what the fuck?’ expression on his face.
***
Isak probably had the same 'what the fuck' kind of look on his own face. He still had no idea what the make of the little girl he and Ian apparently adopted (that's what he figured happened anyway) in the future or some alternate universe. Sure he believed in the whole multiple universe theory and all that, but he still couldn't believed he'd ever adopt a kid.
But there she was. And calling him 'Papa', which he wasn't sure was worse than 'Daddy' or not. He didn't say anything about it, though. He was still a bit shocked to say anything, really.
"She said her name is Rosalie," he told Ian, shrugging slightly. Just then, the waitress came by with her chocolate milkshake.
"Yay, thank you!" Rosalie grinned as she began to drink it. Part of Isak wondered if she should have a milkshake for breakfast. Another part didn't really care. She seemed happy enough with it.
***
Ian knew that she shouldn’t have a milkshake for breakfast. If Fiona were here she would never approve. But hey, desperate times called for desperate measures, and they were clearly in over their heads.
“Hi Rosalie. That’s a pretty name. How old are you?” He asked the little girl. He could handle a kid. He’d just never handled one who was supposedly his.
***
Isak couldn't handle any kid. Certainly not one that just unexpectedly dropped into his lap like Rosalie had. He wasn't planning on having any kids. Not now and probably not ever, though who knows in the future.
But right now? This was so weird and fucked up, he had no idea what to do. So he was kinda happy to let Ian ask all the questions. He just sat and sipped on his coffee.
"I'm six!" Rosalie smiled, holding up six fingers. "And you and Papa are this many," she held up as many fingers as she could. "But you look different now. You look... um..." She was struggling to find the right word. Isak was going to let her figure it out herself, but after a few moments, he grew impatient.
"Younger," he said and Rosalie nodded. "Yeah, younger!"
***
Six was a good age, Ian thought. At least a six year old could go to the bathroom on their own and feed themselves if you put food in front of them. They still needed a lot of care, of course, but not nearly as hands on as a toddler. Not that he’d ever expected to suddenly have a kid, but if he did six was a good age.
He laughed when she held up all her fingers. She only had ten, after all, and however old he and Isak were when they had her, they were considerably older than ten.
“Yeah, I bet we do look younger.” Ian said gently. “That’s why we were so surprised to see you. We’re still young, like just out of high school, and we don’t have any kids yet.”
The idea of them having a kid together was still really weird. Jesus, were they married or something??
***
Isak suppose six was a good age too. At least there was no need to change diapers or anything like that. He had no idea how to do that kind of thing. He'd never been around babies or toddlers or even little kids before. Part of him wished he had a younger sibling so he had some experience but that simply didn't happen.
Rosalie nodded. "Yeah, I think I'm from the future or something and I'm visiting you in the past!" She glanced at both of them. "I must be really far into the past if you just grad- grada, uh got out of high school."
Isak had to wonder how far into the future she was from. "So how old are we in the future?" he asked and Rosalie turned to him. "I think you are both thirty-something."
***
Ian turned to Isak and said with a mock-serious expression. “Thirty-something is a respectable age to have kids. At least I didn’t knock you up right out of high school, right?” Then his face broke into a grin a the sheer ridiculousness of the idea. As a gay-dude the one thing he knew was that he didn’t have to worry about getting anyone pregnant. He never expected to have kids of his own, just lots of nieces and nephews from all his siblings. Hell, Debbie was already pregnant at fourteen. And yet, here he was, with a kid.
“You’re definitely visiting us in the past, then. We’re both eighteen now.” He said to Rosalie. “Are we...like...married, in your time?”
***
Isak just snorted. "I always figured I'd get knocked up and have to drop out. I'm kind of surprised that didn't happen," he laughed. Yeah, it was pretty ridiculous because there was no way that was even possible. Good thing too because he was so not ready for kids. Maybe he might in the future (apparently he was), but definitely not anytime soon.
Too bad the stupid Dome wasn't listening and gave him a kid anyway.
Rosalie nodded. "Yep! You guys got married when you were like 25 or something. Or was it 27? I can’t remember, but it's been like eight years now, I think."
***
“You always were that kind of girl.” Ian said to Isak with a grin. The whole situation was weird, but if you couldn’t joke about stuff like this you’d never make it here.
“Married. Wow.” He looked over at Isak. They were just friends in this time and place, but things like this kept happening to them, like the dome or the universe or whatever kept trying to get them together in different timelines.
“Well, Munchkin,” He said to Rosalie. “We’re not married yet, so I guess we’ll have to decide which one of us you’ll stay with for now.”
***
"Not gonna argue with that," Isak chuckled a bit. It felt a little good to joke about it. It made things less overwhelming. Not much but it helped a little.
He exchanged looks with Ian. Yeah, wow was definitely right. He liked Ian but he wasn't interested in him like that. He certainly did not want to marry him, even though in some other universe (and possibly several others if their experiences with the Dome said anything), he did.
Rosalie frowned. She wished they were living in the house they had together, but as both her fathers pointed out, this was in the past where they weren't together. "Can't I stay with you both?" she asked. "I can stay with Daddy tonight and stay with you tomorrow night?"
