The house was different, not the house at all, when Avery pulled her little brother in through the bedroom door to find their parents. It was weird that they weren’t at home, but it wasn’t the first time that their parents had just picked them up and moved them to someone else’s house in the middle of the night for some reason and she just assumed that something had happened. Which also explained very nicely why their dad wasn’t there!
Helping Jaime up onto the bed, she let him crawl all over their mom while Avery went and tugged on her hand.
“Mommy.” No response so she tugged harder. “Mommy!”
She was only six, her brother only four, so they couldn’t do anything themselves just yet and so Mommy needed to wake up.

Daisy was completely out of it, she’d had a few rough nights but thankfully last night her dreams hadn’t turned to nightmares and she’d slept soundly. It was early and she was incredibly comfortable, she had no plans so she hadn’t set an alarm and was intending to just laze around today. It was a rare day when she wasn’t up early, it had been a while since she’d slept in but that is what she was doing.
When she felt someone tugging on her hand she mumbled under her breath, her words entirely unintelligible as she fought to stay asleep. It would have worked too if it hadn’t been for the harder tugging and someone calling for their Mommy.
She jerked a little as awareness came to her. She looked over and saw two little faces looking at her, there was something a little familiar about them but she couldn’t place them.
“Uh… are you two lost?” she said, sitting up and glancing around. She had no idea where these two had come from but someone would surely be missing them.

“I’m hungry,” Jaime whined, flopping onto their mom’s side, head-butting her a little too aggressively and Avery instinctively reached out to try to grab him before he got into trouble for it. He was a huge troublemaker and it was her job as a big sister to try to make sure that he didn’t do anything too stupid.
Too much like dad, Mommy always said.
“Mommy, can we have breakfast? Jaime wants scrambled eggs!” Actually Avery was the one who wanted scrambled eggs but Jaime would eat just about anything so it was fine. “Can you make them like Daddy does?”
“Hungry!” Jaime insisted again, and once again used his head to try to get his mother’s attention. She wasn’t waking up fast enough.

Daisy thought maybe she was dreaming, this had to be a dream but the way the little boy head-butted her side was enough to convince her that she was in fact awake. She just stared at the two children, lost for words as the girl called her Mommy again. Clearly these kids were confused, she wasn’t anyone’s Mommy and she’d certainly remember if she’d had two children.
“Uh…” she stammered, looking around the room as she tried to figure out what was going on. “What?” she said as they mentioned a father figure. “Where is your Dad?” she asked, hoping maybe their answer might shed some light on what was going on. “And what do I call him when I don’t call him Daddy?”
It was far too early for this and she was definitely under caffeinated but she wasn’t entirely sure she’d be able to walk if she tried to stand up at the moment.

“How come you don’t know where he is?” Avery wondered. That was weird. Even if her dad had to go somewhere in the middle of the night while they were sleeping, Mommy always knew where he’d gone to and always made the promises that he’d come back safe and soon. She didn’t like that this time he apparently hadn’t told her anything and now Daddy was gone and no one knew where. He could be anywhere!
At least they knew he was under the dome so that was something.
“Can you ask lots of questions while you make breakfast?” They were only kids and there were too many questions all at once, so Avery wasn’t going to answer them all. Not until there was the promise of food.

“Uh, because I was asleep,” she said, hoping that was answer enough because she honestly didn’t know how to handle any of this. She had no idea who their dad was, let alone where he was but they were convinced she was their Mom so it had to be someone she knew. She tried to figure it out by looking at them closer but she couldn’t. She didn’t exactly want to call everyone she knew and ask if they had a clue but she might not have any other choice.
She needed coffee and she needed it now.
“Okay, okay, let’s go and get some breakfast and I can get some coffee,” she said, shifting a little to encourage the kids to move before she got up. She grabbed a shirt and pulled it on over her vest top she’d slept in. “You said you wanted scrambled eggs, right?” She asked, moving out of the bedroom. She really hoped she had some eggs in the kitchen.
