As Susan finished arranging cookies on a tray, Helen walked into the living room, carefully balancing a tray that held the teapot and three cups, eyes the same shade of blue as Susan’s fixated on the teapot of hot water. Looking up as she sensed movement, Susan automatically reached out to help steady the tray.
“Helen dear, you didn’t have to bring that in.” In fact, she half wished the girl hadn’t, because if she had dropped it - or worse, spilled it on herself - it would not have gone well. Once the tea was sitting safely on the table next to the cookies, Helen looked up at Susan and gave a cheeky smile.
“But I knew I could do it! And I didn’t spill it, either!” Her smile was contagious, and Susan returned it after only a brief moment of hesitation. “You are incorrigible, aren’t you?” Reaching out, she lightly brushed her hand over her daughter’s hair, marveling again at the fact that this girl was actually hers. “You remind me so much of my sister,” she murmured, before hearing a knock at the door.
“That must be Alfr - your father,” she said, letting her hand fall away so that she could brush it down her own skirt to smooth a wrinkle in the dark blue material as she turned to walk towards the door, pulling it open to smile at Alfred.
“You’re right on time.”
