Kenji Axel looked around curiously. It looked like home, but something seemed strange. For one thing, he was by himself, and outside, and he couldn’t remember how he got here. He had the feeling that he should be scared - after all, he was alone and without an adult - and somewhere deep inside, he was; but he couldn’t bring himself to be too scared. It wasn’t that he thought things were going to work out - it was just that, as usual, he seemed to feel things less strongly than the other kids his age.
He had always heard that the thing to do if you got lost was just to stay still and let an adult find you, so that’s what he did. He found himself a nearby park bench, and just sat down on it, watching people as they went by, looking for someone he recognised.
Luckily it wasn’t too long before he saw someone he knew - or, someone who was almost someone he knew. She looked like his mom, but a mom he had seen in photos - much, much younger than the mom he knew. Hesitantly, he held up his hand and waved at her a little, calling out, “Mom?”

Unlike most people, Usagi was actually kind of excited about future kids showing up. She loved children, thought they were cute and adorable. Part of her hoped maybe she'd have a little boy or girl show up for her. Or maybe her own daughter from the future back home would show up. Chibiusa had came from the future before, maybe she could again in Madison Valley.
Unfortunately, neither Chibiusa or any other kid showed up. Usagi was a bit disappointed, so she cheered herself up by getting herself a cinnamon bun. She decided to cut through the park on her way back home. She stopped when she heard a voice spoke. A boy on a bench had called her mom. Or she thought he was talking to her. She glanced around, seeing if there was anyone else he could be addressing. When she didn't see anyone, she turned back to him.
"Uh, me?" she asked, pointing to herself to make sure.
***
Kenji nodded shyly. It was strange that his mom didn’t recognize him, but he wasn’t particularly upset; after all, she looked a lot younger. He figured he must be in the past or something. That would explain why everything seemed just a little bit different.
“I’m Kenji,” he introduced himself. “Kenji Axel. Is Dad around too? Um. Dad is Roxas,” he clarified, figuring that if she didn’t recognize him she might not know who his dad was either.
***
Usagi felt a little bad for not recognizing her own child. But he was from the future and definitely from a time where she had no idea he even existed, let alone know who he actually is. She hadn't recognized Chibiusa either, but still. She felt a little bad.
"Kenji, huh? Guess I must've named you after my dad." Well, her present, Earth dad anyway. She never really knew her father in her past life on the moon. She was about to say she didn't know who his dad was, but luckily he told her. At the mention of Roxas' name, she felt herself blush a little because it meant, well, they'd been intimate in some sort of future.
She tried not to think too much on it and focused on the boy. "He's around. I'm not sure where he is, but I can text him if you want."
***
“Yes please,” Kenji said. He felt like he would feel better with both his parents there.
“Is this the past?” he asked then, wanting to confirm his assumption.
***
"Okay," Usagi nodded. She went over to sit beside him on the bench and pulled out her phone, sending Roxas a quick text. She wasn't sure at first how she should go about this, but in the end, she just decided to come out with it and told him everything.
"For you, yes," she told him. "For me, it's still the present. Er... I think. You should ask Setsuna, she's better at the whole time thing than I am."
***
Roxas looked at his phone and blinked. He had another child? With Usagi? Well, he’d better go make sure this child was feeling at home.
He liked the kid’s name. Kenji Axel. It was very like him to have named him after Axel. It made him smile to think of it.
Roxas headed over as quickly as he could.
While they were waiting, Kenji thought about what Usagi had said. “That makes sense, I think,” he said. “Except that I don’t know why I’m here. Do you know?” he asked.
***
Usagi shrugged. "The Dome brought you here, I'm guessing. Though why, I have no idea. It does things and we never know why." She didn't mind the Dome most of the time. Only when it hurted people or took them away, that was when she wasn't a big fan of it. Future kids, though, wasn't too bad. Not compared to being attacked by demons. That was pretty bad.
She glanced and happened to see Roxas. "Oh look, there's your dad!" She waved in hopes of getting Roxas' attention.
***
Roxas waved back and came over. He looked at the kid and smiled awkwardly. “Hi, Kenji,” he said.
“Hi, dad,” Kenji said just as calmly, and then got up and gave Roxas a hug that, while not cold, was not as enthusiastic as someone might expect. Then he realized he hadn’t given his mom a hug, and turned to give her one as well.
When Kenji turned away, Roxas shrugged over his head helplessly at Usagi. He had no idea what to do with a kid, still. But when he was feeling lost and homesick, ice cream always made him feel better. “Should we go… get some ice cream?” he offered.
***
Usagi herself hadn't noticed. She was too shocked that Kenji showed up in the first place, but she was happy to return the hug, even if he didn't seem into it himself. Now that she thought about it, the boy seemed quite calm for someone suddenly thrown into the past unexpectedly.
But she decided to think on that and maybe mention it to Roxas later. Right now, she was hungry and while it was cold out, ice cream sounded good. "I'm down for getting some ice cream," she nodded. "What about you, Kenji? Want some ice cream?"
***
“Ice cream would be nice,” Kenji said. Back home, him and his dad got ice cream together a lot, so it was comforting to him as well.
“Alright,” said Roxas. “Let’s go to the Creamery, then.” He knew where it was - he’d searched it out on his own. Sadly they didn’t have sea salt ice cream, but they did have lots of other flavours. He led the way through the busy streets. He held onto Kenji’s hand, since it was something he’d seen lots of parents doing with their kids.
***
The Creamery was one of the first place Usagi went. That and the bakery, which was no surprise to anyone who knew the girl and her appetite for sweet foods. Being here for a long time now, she knew exactly where to go from the park.
She wasn't sure if she should hold Kenji's other hand or not. She did offer it and if he took it, great. If not, that was fine too.
They made it to the ice cream shop and entered. While it was a bit chilly for ice cream, Usagi was kind of looking forward to having some. "So what flavor do you like?" she asked Kenji. "I'm thinking of getting a hot fudge sundae myself."
***
Kenji took both of his parents’ hands while they walked, keeping carefully in line with them.
When Usagi asked him, he smiled a little, looking over the different flavours. “Cookie dough, please,” he said politely to the person on the other side of the counter.
“Good chocie,” said Roxas, before ordering a vanilla ice cream cone for himself. He liked the simple flavours.
“Should we sit down in here?” Roxas asked. It was warm in the store, and as much as he liked ice cream, eating it in the cold outside would be a bit much.
***
"Ooh, yes, I love cookie dough!" Usagi grinned. She would've gotten it herself but she was in the mood for a hot fudge sundae at the moment.
They got their ice cream fairly quickly. "Let's stay inside," she suggested. "It's a bit too cold to be eating ice cream out in the cold." She at least didn't want to eat ice cream out in the snow. And since there wasn't many people here, finding a place to sit was easy and she lead the way to an empty table.
Once they were all settled, she turned to Kenji. "So what's the future like?" she asked curiously.
***
Kenji shrugged. It seemed pretty much the same as things right now, honestly. Sure, the technology was fancier, but they still lived in Madison Valley, and things were small enough here that there were no big flashing billboards or holograms all over the place. “You’re older,” he said simply. “And there’s holograms. And things are… faster.”
***
Usagi nodded. She figured she'd be older and that things would be faster. "Holograms? There's actually holograms?! That's so cool!" Actually, there probably were already holograms here. But the ones from the future had to be way better, she was sure. "What about what we do?" she asked curiously. "What kind of job do I have?"
Kenji at some of his ice cream before answering. "Well, right now, you're a stay at home mom. Dad works, but you were considering becoming a kindergarten teacher in the future."
Usagi thought it sounded a bit right. But she did frown at the thought of becoming a teacher. "I hate school, why would I want to be a teacher? Stay at home mom sounds way better." She could just chill and relax at home.
***
“What kind of job do I have?” Roxas asked curiously. He assumed that in this future world, he wouldn’t be fighting for the Organization anymore.
He was right. “You work for a newspaper,” Kenji answered. “You investigate things for them and write sometimes.”
Roxas liked the sound of that. Investigating things to tell other people about them, rather than just hiding in the shadows and doing what the Organization told him.
***
"Ooh, what's it called again?" Usagi paused for a moment. "The Madison Valley Arcane? That's actually kind of cool!" she grinned at Roxas. She kind of liked the future Kenji was describing. Well, aside from her wanting to be a kindergarten teacher. She still had trouble believing she'd ever go back to school like that.
"So... I guess we should talk about where Kenji is staying," she spoke as she ate some more ice cream. "Do you want to stay with me or your dad?" she asked the younger boy.
***
Kenji looked confused for a moment, and then sad. “Can’t I stay with you both?” he asked.
Roxas looked at him and gave a sad sort of half smile. “We don’t live together,” he said. “But maybe you could spend some time with each of us?”
***
Usagi nodded. "Yes. You're in the past, remember? This is before your dad and I, uh, got together." Which made sense when she thought about it. They could just say this was before they started dating or something.
"But maybe you can stay with one of us for tonight and go to the other's house the next night?" she suggested.
***
“Ok,” said Kenji. He looked quietly between the two of them, unwilling to make a decision.
Roxas looked up at Usagi. “Maybe you can take him tonight?” he said quietly. He was a bit overwhelmed by the idea of suddenly looking after two kids, one of whom was from the future and one from a completely different reality based on the old west.
***
Usagi noticed Kenji's hesitance and she understood. Of course if it were her, she'd want to be with both parents, even if both parents lived in different homes. But as such, it couldn't be helped. Usagi was still under Setsuna's care and Roxas was under his guardian's care.
Luckily, Roxas made a suggestion and she was fine with it. "I can. I'm sure Setsuna wouldn't mind if he stayed with us for the night. Maybe a couple more if needed." She was definitely going to have to explain things to Setsuna and Hotaru too. But since they met her future daughter back home, she was sure they'd understand.
"That alright with you, Kenji?" she asked him gently. "You can meet Setsuna and Hotaru." She assumed he would know who they were. Setsuna wasn't just her guardian and she was her ward. Both of them were her guardians and she was their princess. They were sworn to protect her at all costs.
***
“I know Setsuna and Hotaru,” said Kenji, looking a little confused. But he supposed they might not know him either, since they were in the past. “I’d be happy to meet the past versions of them. Yes, that sounds alright.”
Roxas looked a little relieved. It would give him time to sort things out with his guardian and figure out what to do with suddenly being in charge of two kids. Still, it was interesting to hear about what a future would be like.
“Enjoy your night with your mom,” Roxas said.
