Clay really kind of loathed the entire month of December. Oh, he had nothing against Christmas. He rather enjoyed the gift giving season. But working in retail? Yeah, he didn't enjoy that so much. People were insane at times, desperate to find the right gift for friends and loved ones. The store was a mad house, and sometimes he fantasized about reviving his 'Enforcer' persona to teach them a lesson.
He didn't do it, of course. He hadn't been 'the enforcer' for years. There was little need for it in Madison. Clay appreciated that, but he also felt a good deal of nostalgia for it. His life here was entirely different, better in many ways, lacking in others, compared to his life back home. Mostly he was grateful for his life here. He was on good terms with Elena, he had a new love and that was more than he could have ever hoped for.
He enjoyed his job most days. It was quite different from working at university. He missed teaching, but not the other aspects. Some days he seriously wondered if working a sales floor was better than grading papers, but this was his life now and he accepted it. Sometimes, though, he had a customer who just drove him up the wall. The woman was gone now, and it really was something of a miracle that Clay hadn't brought out the claws to scare her off.
He needed a break after that one, and returned to the sales floor a while later somewhat refreshed, but definitely counting down until he got off work for the day. He turned and almost plowed right into a customer. "Sorry," he muttered. It was unusual for him not to realise someone was so close. But it was the holiday season and there were a lot of smells to process.
