Two things happened. One, the energy in the air shifted and Harry could feel it radiating off the boy. It permeated the air and made the hair on the back of his neck stand, his skin crawled with it. Two, the Winter Mantle rumbled its defiance and roared in the back of Harry's head, demanding the idiot, foolish child be brought to his knees for his assumptions, for his arrogance and his attitude. Harry forced it away though, looked at Kvothe grimly and raised a hand palm outward, swiping his hand horizontally in a half circle across the space between them and with that motion alone sapped the energy out of the air around them and absorbed it into his own being. It drained the negative energy away and eased the tension.
"Yes, because soulgazes can't be used to hurt you. You saw into my head and I saw into yours," he said. "It was a fair trade, and no I didn't ask because you would have said no, and I wouldn't have trusted you then. I won't tell anyone what I saw, I swear it on my power. Your secrets are your own and I have no intent of sharing them with anyone else."
And he meant it.
"I'm a lot of things," he said. "Hypocrite might be one of them these days, but I swear my word is good. You don't have to believe it, but I do. Integrity."
