A nearly grown daughter hadn’t been a deterrent when Cameron had met his now wife and as time had passed, he’d come to care about Daisy as though she was his own. She was a wonderful young lady and, despite an appearance that many in this part of the world would call unfortunate, he had high hopes for her. A good marriage and a good life with a man who could provide for her. They’d come this way and settled in Madison in hopes of finding her that, though he told everyone who asked that it was for the good farming, that corn was a staple crop and the land here was perfect for growing it, that the land he’d purchased to work was to leave his boy, now boys, something.
But it was to leave Daisy something too, if she couldn’t be married off. Cameron knew that Lucas would make sure his siblings were always provided for. Even about to go off to his own home, with the wedding nearly upon them.
As difficult as it was to admit that not everyone saw the world as openly as he did, Cameron knew that two of his children were in for a much more difficult life, simply by virtue of their births.
Coming out of the house, he found Daisy in the front yard with work he’d definitely assigned to one of the boys, let it be, though and just dropped his hat on his head. “Go on and fetch the wagon horses,” he called out to her. “Come into town with me.”
