Mining could be a dangerous job and Wanda found herself watching the clock every day when it was time for her husband to be coming home. She tried to be a good wife and always have supper ready when he got there, knowing how hard he worked to provide for them, and she always worried that some day he wouldn’t come home and she’d be forced to get a job in the saloon, or worse the brothel, to support herself.
Today, she prepared Pietro’s favorite meal, a roast chicken with some fresh peas from the garden, and waited anxiously for him to return so they could eat together.
***
Pietro knew his job was dangerous but he didn’t mind it too much. He had always been a hard worker and with a wife to support he made sure he did as well as he could to ensure they were safe and secure. He hated making Wanda worry but it was relatively good money and he was as careful as he could be.
As soon as he opened the door and could smell the food his wife had made a wide smile appeared on his face, nothing could be too bad when he had such wonders waiting for him at home. When he spotted her, the relief on her face showed him she had been fretting as usual, “I will always come back to you” he promised her, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
***
Wanda appreciated the promise, even though she knew it might be out of his control to keep it. “I hope you worked up an appetite,” she said. They were pretty well stocked for the impending winter and she wanted to make sure that they enjoyed as much fresh produce from the garden as they could before the weather turned.
“This might be the last of the peas for the season,” she added. She found that she enjoyed working in the garden and was pleased by how well her efforts paid off this season. They even had enough cucumbers and tomatoes for her to pickle some to enjoy during the winter.
***
It may well be out of his hands to actually keep the promise but he needed her to know that it was something he’d fight hard to do, she meant the world to him and he’d always fight for her. “You know me, I always have an appetite especially for your cooking” he told her with a smile.
“Then I will savour them” he replied, “You’ve made our garden thrive this year love” He was a very lucky man, Wanda had worked wonders in the garden and the kitchen which was very much appreciated.

“We have been blessed with a bounty this season,” Wanda agreed. Farming always included an element of risk and she was glad they didn’t have to rely solely on what they could get from the land thanks to her husband’s hard work in the mines. The more they were able to grow and raise meant they had to spend less of that hard earned money though, something she thought was important for when they finally welcome children into their lives.
She turned to look at Pietro with a smile. “Go wash up and I will get supper on the table.”
***
Pietro was very grateful for their luck this harvest as well as Wanda’s skill, there was no doubt in his mind it was a combination of the two which had given them such a good season. If it continued on this way then their little family would be able to grow and thrive as they both wished it to.
He nodded and moved to follow his wifes instruction, wanting to wash the grime of the mines from his skin anyway. The mess of the work was something which he didn’t enjoy even if he didn’t mind the work itself.
***
By the time he finished washing up, Wanda had their food on the table. Their home was small and cozy and it suited them just fine. If and when they had children, they would need some additional space, but for right now, that wasn’t a concern.
“Are you going to have to work this weekend?” she asked. “Or will you be able to attend the wedding?” Everyone in town was looking forward to the Mitchell boy and his betrothed getting married. They hadn’t had a good party in town for a while and with the recent spate of murders, they all needed something positive.
***
Pietro shook his head, “No work. I can take you to the wedding. It should be a good one, everybody needs something after the terrible things that have happened here recently” It worried Pietro, especially when he was at work all day and Wanda was on her own. He’d go mad if anything happened to her.
***
It did make her a little nervous being home alone during the day since she vaguely resembled the women who were murdered, but Wanda tried not to let her husband see that. They didn’t have an option for him not to work and she didn’t want to make him worry about her safety when he wasn’t around.
“Yes, it will be a nice time,” she said. “I look forward to dancing with you. We haven’t danced in quite some time.”
***
Wanda did well, Pietro believed her to be the strongest woman he knew. Her strength was one of the things that had drew him to her in the first place.
“Too long” he agreed, reaching out to take her hand in his, “I know it isn’t easy on you when I work so much. But it will be worth it, I promise” He worked hard for both of them, to make their future easier. He didn’t want Wanda to have to worry about anything when they became parents.
***
“I know,” Wanda said, squeezing his hand. “I am lucky to have such a hard working and caring husband.” Some of the girls she grew up with weren’t nearly so lucky. She heard stories around town about husbands who were not gentle with their wives or who spent all their money at the saloon or brothel instead of providing for their family.
She smiled and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before leading him to the table so they could eat. “I plan to finish harvesting the garden this week,” she said. “And preparing the land for next growing season.”
***
Pietro worked with men who frequented brothels but for him they held no appeal, Wanda was all he needed. He wanted nobody other than her. And as such he treated her as he believed she should be treated, someone to be treasured.
Sitting down Pietro nodded, “Let me know if you need me to do anything” he said, he didn’t want her injuring herself by doing too much.
***
After she filled his plate with food, Wanda filled her own and sat down to join him. She reached for his hand to say a quick blessing before they ate.
