Tuesday morning came and went, and already word of the murder of the poor woman already reached the boarding house and its inhabitants. In a town this small, even those who tried to shield themselves from such news would’ve had poor luck indeed doing so.
Sonya herself felt sicked at hearing what happened, over breakfast. The victim wasn’t one of the fallen women, as was so often the case, but a seamstress, a woman like herself trying to get by in the world. Even worse, she knew the woman, knew her to be steadfast and a good worker-she didn’t deserve what happened to her. Once more, she was reminded why she preferred to take in single women and families as lodgers. The world was a rough place for a single woman; as a widow of some years, she was allowed a degree of, especially with a child and no distant kin to call on for aide, but that was only because she had been married at some point. Prior to this, she considered herself safe, but this woman was an honest one, she herself had been one of her customers on occasion-and it left her feeling worried Who knew now who was safe and who was in danger. At home, she wasn’t so worried; in life, Johnny had a revolver he kept at his study, and since his departure she’d moved it to her night stand. Outside, she made sure to carry a umbrella-an item she found useful for not just keeping out of the sun or rain
That day especially, she felt especially better with it at her side while on errands (as well as less conspicuous) . She had an entire household to look after, her servants couldn’t very well do their job without supplies, and to feed her child meant ordering food in the first place. That had been her routine since Johnny died from influenza just two years ago, and she started taking in boarders to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Perhaps it wasn’t as fancy as the hotel, but Sonya prided herself on making her guests feel comfortable and safe, and that meant keeping the place keeping the place well stocked and ordered.
Having left Cassie to be minded by Ms. Evans, she left early that morning after breakfast was served and cleared. If she saw any close friends nearby, she might pop over and say hello afterwards, but for the most part, she needed to get the errands out of the way first. .
