How she'd managed to conceal her pregnancy, she didn't know. But she'd been dutiful about it. She'd sewn her dresses a bit big, and wore a decorative shaw that drew attention away from her figure. And when it was time, she lay in her bed and birthed the child, half hoping it wouldn't survive.
It was a beautiful, healthy baby boy. She cried from the mix of emotions, and the tears flowed as freely as the milk when she fed him. She knew she couldn't keep him. She couldn't give him any kind of life. A saloon was no place for a babe. So she did the only thing she could do.
It wasn't an easy choice, but it was the only choice she could make for him. It was the only chance he had at a decent life. As much as it pained her to do it, she saw no other viable option. There was no place for an infant at her side. Keeping him would condemn him to a life of pain and misery.
In the darkest part of the night, just before the sun would begin to rise and fill the sky with light, she wrapped him in a freshly cleaned blanket, lay him in a basket, and carried him outside. She kept the the shadows as she made her way to the church. She kissed his smooth forehead and caressed his tiny cheek.
"You'll be safe here, my love," she told him. She trusted that the preacher would tend to him, and find him a home. She was long gone before his helpless cries pierced the silence of the new day.
