Delirium woke up somewhere new.
She knew it was somewhere new because it wasn’t somewhere that felt like other places. It felt like… what were those things called? Not magnets. Stronger than magnets. Magnets but big and tiny all at the same time, and pulling things that weren’t metal and weren’t magnets and were just regular everyday things. She couldn’t remember the word.
It looked like other places though. She thought. At least it looked like other places that weren’t her place, or siblings’. It had a normal-looking street and normal-looking buildings on both sides of the street. She wasn’t sure how she’d gotten here, but that wasn’t strange. Some people were looking at her funny, but it was just the sort of funny where they thought you didn’t belong where you were, and Del never belonged where she was, so that was ok. Some people were looking at her like she did belong where she was, but they didn’t like it. Lots of people just weren’t looking at her. Or at least, lots of people would have been not looking at her if there had been lots of people around. She had that feeling.
Del kept walking down the street. She didn’t know where she was going yet, but she would know when she saw it. That was the way it usually went. She watched for new things here, but even though the whole place was new, everything she saw was old. It was strange. She wasn’t sure she liked it.
One of the people who was looking at her looked young. That was probably a house. They were probably playing in front of their house. They were very small and looked at her with wide eyes. Delirium smiled and waved a little. The child waved back, eyes still wide, then grinned. The grin made Delirium happy. She made him a butterfly for his troubles. When the butterfly landed on his nose, his eyes grew even wider.
Del trailed a few more butterflies as she walked away, looking for what she was supposed to do.
