Mal put up a front that she didn't care, that nothing could affect her, but Birkhoff knew better than that.He knew how much she cared about her friends, especially Evie. Those two were thick as thieves.
That she was shacking up with Constantine was definitely not good, but it wasn't the worst thing. "Everyone processes grief differently," he reminded her. "She's going to need you to be strong for her when she's ready to come up for air." He knew about benders, about doing all the things that you'd hate yourself for later. It was going to take someone who could get through to her to get her through it when she was ready to face what she'd lost. "She'll come up for air soon," he encouraged. She'd break sooner or later and she was going to go right to Mal. That was how friendship worked, especially one as close as theirs.
