There was little in Madison Valley that Jeremy enjoyed more than spending time with the children of the house. He’d never considered himself someone who liked being around children as much as he did now, and he wondered how much he should be attributing to the fact that he had no chance to see his own grandchildren born or grow up. Kate, and Logan in the time that he’d been around, had come into his life as adults. Rocco and Cadence had done so as infants and he was having the privilege of watching and guiding them. And being only three and four, they were most definitely the funniest people he’d met. He loves listening to them talk about whatever came to their minds, usually not at all related to the last thought and usually making very little sense.
Which was why it was often Jeremy who took on caring for them whenever he had the time. He’d been sitting with Rocco, the two of them painting though the boy’s work was little more than a mess all over the sheet that had been put down beneath him, when Kate came in with Cadence and an explanation that Beth was yet another name to the list of those recently lost. Without a word, Jeremy just rose to set the little girl up with paints of her own and sent Kate off again.
He’d never been close to Beth, barely knew her beyond she was important to Avery and important to Cadence. As much as he liked their resident human, the latter carried more weight. And so while he could distract the girl from being upset by the truth, he would happily.
They’d all suffered a lot of losses as of late. He couldn’t think of any of them who weren’t affected in some way, and so soon after the difficult time with the countdown clock it was even harder on them all. He wished, of course, racked his brain at every chance he got to find a way to make it easier on his Pack. They’d all been through enough here, in their lives, and it was time for them to have something nice. A few days away that they wound up being called back from wasn’t enough and wasn’t something that everyone could enjoy equally. Unfortunately it didn’t seem like a trip anywhere was going to be in the plan for the Pack as a whole, but maybe he could consult a few of the less hurt and have something nice put together for them all.
Something he could be sure Kitty was invited to. She’d been close to Liam before his disappearance and had expressed an interest in joining the Pack that Jeremy had been giving serious consideration to. It had taken a long time for him to extend the invitation to join to Mercy, but she had never asked before it. Kitty had, and expressed a willingness to do whatever it took to earn her place. He’d set her only one task, one that she seemed to be making efforts to live up to and that was really the most he could ask. The Pack was close, but by virtue of years of being together and family bonds more than anything else, there had been plenty of Pack members in the past who had lived apart and still been completely loyal. Maybe it was worth taking a chance.
Maybe whatever was arranged to cheer everyone up would be a celebration to welcome her. A new Sister was definitely something to be happy about.
His musing stopped when Rocco wandered over with a paintbrush covered in bright blue paint, smearing it against Jeremy’s own work as the boy waved a still wet painting at him, demanding his attention. Jeremy couldn’t even be annoyed that the landscape he’d been working on, which most certainly did not need broad blue strokes across the ground, was ruined, maybe beyond repair. He simply took the brush out the child’s hand and set it down before looking at the painting.
“That’s very good, Rocco,” he praised. “You’re developing an interesting eye.” It was a mess of paint more than it was anything resembling a picture. It was every colour Jeremy had given him mashed together until it came together to look like splotches of mud. But he’d read that it was best to encourage their creative endeavours, and he did like sharing what had been his career with the children.
“I’ll paint more, okay!” Rocco announced, simply dropped the still wet canvas onto the floor, Jeremy was even more glad for the sheets that had been put down to save the floor, and went to start all over. Jeremy could only smile fondly after him, glanced to check on Cadence working on her own painting, before turning his attention toward covering up the blue streaks.
They’d lost some, but their family was strong and it was growing. Maybe the time would come when Stiles would want to be counted among them, too, though he knew that would be more complicated than any other given that Scott was there and that Jeremy would never want to step on the toes of another Alpha. They worked together, supported one another, but Jeremy wouldn’t poach the young man’s Pack. That would just be a bridge to cross if they ever came to it. In the meantime, they could continue welcoming those who wanted it, whether werewolf looking for a place to belong like Kitty or a human who would benefit from their protection like Avery or Ella. They were all counted as family.
