Evan felt a little bit of a let down when school started and he wasn't going. He didn't have many good memories of his years in school, but going to school was a routine that he had always been able to count on. Even if he felt like an outsider in his own life, he liked the routine that school provided.
Instead, he'd gotten a job, and started a new and very different routine. He worked at a bookshop, sorting and organising things in the back. He rarely had to go out on the store floor, and even when he did, it wasn't so that he could interact with other people. His boss was very understanding of Evan's anxiety and allowed him to work at his own pace, and didn't expect him to do things that made him uncomfortable.
It was ideal. Not quite the same as the routine of school, but it was a routine. Evan liked routine. And because he relied so heavily on routine, his days off were awkward and aimless, like he didn't know what to do with himself, because he felt like he should be in school.
He glanced at Turner across the kitchen table. He hadn't eaten much, but then he never did. And she didn't push him to eat more than he did, which he appreciated. It seemed like everything was going so well in his life. No one was expecting him to do anything he didn't want to do. He was allowed to just...live his life, and do things that made him feel comfortable and relaxed. So why did he feel so agitated?
