This was just crazy. That was the only way Charlie could describe her situation. She was in a strange town that wasn't familiar to her. There were strange people who could do crazy things like magic. That wasn't possible. Those sort of things were in books, movies, and comics. They weren't actually real. Then again, Charlie hadn't believed a lot of things to be real before everything that had happened. You wouldn't think a murder could happen in a quiet town like Hurricane. You couldn't imagine having a twin sibling that was murdered when you were just a child. So many things that you would never expect to happen in your lifetime suddenly happening in the matter of a few years would do that to a person. Standing in front of one of the many shops, Charlie had her hands buried deep into the pockets of her olive green jacket. It was obscenely hot, but it was what she had arrived in. One minute she was leaving her Advanced Artificial Intelligence class, the next minute she was here. John was going to be waiting for her. Jessica would probably start trying to find her. Noone had cell phones like she had received back home, so she couldn't call anyone. Charlie learned she couldn't anyway, which didn't make her feel any better. She felt alone. Uncomfortably so. That feeling of having nowhere to go was undeniably heavy and Charlie didn't realize she had pressed her head against the store window. There was a smudge left when she pulled her head back. It made Charlie feel even more gross about everything and anything. All she wanted was to close her eyes, take a deep breath, and wake up in her dorm room. Even if Jessica was chattering away with someone or listening to some obnoxious music, Charlie wanted to be there in her little mess of wires and parts. She wanted to be anywhere but here. |
