Melissa was torn on how she felt about going back home. On one hand, she was looking forward to it because she would be reunited with the rest of the Circle and her father. On the other hand, though, she was going to miss all the friends she’d made during her two year stay in Madison Valley. Also, Diana would not be there when she returned to Chance Harbor because she’d left with Grant in response to losing her father and finding out that he was not really her father at all. Being in Madison Valley had given her the opportunity to strengthen that friendship again with Diana and if they returned home, it would all be erased.
And not just that aspect, but the memories of her friends here might be too and no, she’d never get to see any of them again. There would be no more Piper and her lovely children, Kenny, Tea, Jo, or any of them. All of that left Melissa depressed and drowning in sadness. It was a heavy loss and maybe even worse than the loss of death because they were not gone completely, but simply out of her reach. Even her magic abilities would not be enough to reunite them ever again.
Staring down into her half empty glass of vodka lemonade, Melissa let out a heavy sigh before lifting the glass to her lips. The clock in the sky was counting down as she sipped and the time she had left to spend with the people she loved was slipping through her fingers like sand in a hourglass and there was no spell that could pause it. Fuck. Melissa swallowed and sighed again just as she heard familiar footsteps entering the kitchen. “Hey Kenny,” Melissa greeted, glancing over her shoulder at him
*** For the most part, Kenny had just accepted that this world was going to end in just a few days and that he'd be going home. Honestly he was kind of looking forward to it. He'd see his sister again, his brother, his parents, his friends. Sure he'd miss his friends here, but what did it matter if he'd just forget them? So he really didn't care either way that he was going home.
But as much as he seemed chill about the whole thing, inside there was something nagging at him. He had accepted the situation, sure. He always did. Whenever something happened, he just shrugged it off as being fate or whatever and nothing he did would change anything. Now, though, a huge part of him didn't want to accept fate this time.
He had been out the last few hours until he finally came home. He decided to grab a drink and ran into Melissa in the kitchen. "Oh, hey, Mel," he replied. He saw the drink she had and after a pause, he asked, "got any more of that?" He wasn't much of a drinker but since this might be the last time he got to spend with Melissa, he figured why not have a drink or two with her.
*** At the question, Melissa offered him a smile and nodded. She knew that Kenny was definitely not a big drinker, but the fact that he had offered to have one with her meant a lot to her. She knew that he was capable of letting a lot things simply roll off his back. He was capable of carrying on, accepting fate, and dealing with it, but she felt this situation was not one of those times that he felt that way. How could he? They were about to say goodbye to people they had know for years and they would never see them again. It was impossible to be completely okay with it even if there were upsides.
Pushing back her chair, Melissa headed over to the counter and mixed him a drink of vodka and some freshly made lemonade. She even added a little umbrella to the drink before walking back to the table and handing over to him. “There you go.” She returned to her seat and took a sip of her drink. “How are you doing?” *** Kenny just didn't have too many good experiences with alcohol. Both his parents drank a lot and when they were drunk, they were really nasty. Mostly to each other. He and his siblings grew up watching their parents argue and fight all the time. But when they were sober, they were actually decent people. Not the best but better than when they were drunk at least.
He grabbed the drink when she gave it to him. "Aww, you even got the little umbrella too," he grinned before he took a sip. At her question, he just shrugged. "I'm doing fine," he replied. He wasn't 100% okay but he could pretend nothing was bothering him right now.
*** From their conversations, Melissa knew that Kenny did not have many good experiences with booze. It was completely understandable he preferred not to touch the stuff. Still, it was nice of him to have a drink with her considering they might not ever get another chance to just talk to with each other. Everyone’s time was running out in Madison Valley unfortunately.
“Yep, you earned it,” Melissa teased, taking a sip of her own vodka lemonade. Melissa usually didn’t break them out unless it was a party, but considering their time was running out, why bother to keep them now? Besides, Kenny deserved an umbrella just for being her friend. “As fine as possible considering our whole world is about to end?” Melissa asked, arching a brow at him. *** "Sweet," Kenny grinned and he took the tiny umbrella out the cup and began playing with it. Since he didn't drink much, it was kind of rare that he got one. Not even from his parents since they'd rather drink beer than buy some fancy drink. They couldn't afford them anyway.
He took a sip of his drink and began stirring it with the umbrella. "Sure. I'm actually kind of hoping I'm around to see it. Like do we go home before it all starts to crumble around us? Cause if so, I'm gonna be disappointed." The chance to see the world end was a once in a lifetime opportunity. But if he wasn't going to be here when things got worse, then that would suck.
*** Melissa smiled at Kenny’s reaction to the umbrella, feeling amused when he started to tinker around with it. This...this stuff was what she was going to miss the most. Just sitting with her friends, chatting about nothing, or doing crazy things. Yes, and Kenny finding her at some random party and sitting with her for a while to chat about anything and everything going on or not so much.
At his question, Melissa shrugged her shoulders. She’d never been in an “end of the world” sort of scenario until now. She was just as clueless as he was as how it would all end up going down. “I don’t know. I mean, it would be shitty if we did not at least get to see what happens before this place kicks us back to our world,” she replied. Count of Kenny to want to see the end of the world. *** "I've always wanted to see the end of the world," Kenny smiled. It was something that he always wondered about. How the world would end. He wasn't sure if he'd ever be around for it. He knew he'll die eventually, everyone did, he just don't know when. Maybe he'll die of old age or maybe he'd keep on going. There was a lot about his immortality that he didn't know. At least if he went back home, maybe he could figure it out.
Now he got the chance to see the end of one world and he really hoped he'd get to actually witness it.
He turned to Melissa. "How are you doing?" he asked. "With the world ending and all?" He knew not many accepted it like he did. And she was drinking, something she did when she was upset, so he had to guess she wasn't doing too good.
*** The fact that Kenny always wanted to see the world end was not surprising to Melissa. It seemed like something he would be curious about. After all, his existence banked on constantly coming back to life and dying in some kind of cycle. The topic of the end of the world ended in death in most instances outside of this one. With Madison Valley ending, it was sending people home to their worlds. In theory, this did not sound bad, but there was the severing of ties here, of friends and families here, that was going to be painful. Once you were back home, you’d probably have forgotten anything that happened in Madison Valley, but in the time before? It was a cruel and painful experience.
“You would,” Melissa responded giving him a smirk. Melissa figured they might not get to see any of it because Madison would be sending them back while it was happening or right before. Either way, Melissa did not care too much. They were going back home and everything they had built here would be completely wiped from their memories.
At his question, Melissa shrugged and took a sip of her drink. “I don’t know. I feel happy in a way because I will see everyone from home again and I never thought I would. I also feel sad because I’m losing everyone I know from here,” she answered finally.
*** "I mean, how often do you get the chance to see the end of the world?" Even if he did die before then, he'd just come back and get another chance to see it. He really hoped he'd get to see it, but for some reason he had the feeling that he wouldn't. And that just kinda bummed him out a little.
He nodded. "Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing my sister again." While he loved Melissa, Tea, Jo and everyone else, and was even in love with Ella, he still felt lost without Karen around. He had promised to protect his sister and make her as happy as possible. Since she wasn't here, he felt like he didn't really have any purpose.
The last thing, though, he didn't quite understand. "I guess it's sad but I don't really get why. I mean, I'm pretty sure no one will remember this place, so why be sad if you'll just forget about it?"
*** “I give. Probably never,” Melissa replied, giving him a smirk. Not that any sane person would want to see the world end probably, but Kenny was not exactly sane sometimes. It was one of things she liked about him...he could be quirky. This was one of those instances except maybe a bit more morbid than usual.
At the comment about his sister, Melissa nodded. She knew how much he missed Karen. She was happy he would get to see her again even if she would never see Kenny again herself. Melissa would get to see Faye and everyone else, especially her dad. That did mean a lot to her.
“True, we won’t remember,” Melissa replied. “That kind of makes me sad too. I don’t know why. I guess I should be happy about that, right?” *** "Exactly," he grinned. Yeah, he was a bit odd and he knew it. He was also definitely morbid, some days more than others. Guess it came with dying all the time, but he did thought about death every day. He didn't always talk about it, but when he did, he talked about it as if it were nothing. Some people were used to it, but others, not so much. He also forgot that death was suppose to be serious and not something to joke about.
"Yeah. I mean, it just seems like a waste of time to me being all sad and shit if you won't even remember things later," he shrugged. He supposed he kind of got why, though. He'd miss her and the others too and it was a bit sad to think about, but he didn't want to be. He wanted his last moments to be happy rather than sad.
*** Melissa did agree with him on that; being sad was a waste of the time they had left here and she didn’t want to waste that precious time. “Jo and me baked some cakes,” she said after a moment. “That was fun and it was a good way to spend possibly a last day together.” Like all her housemates, she would miss Jo too. Still, doing something fun like that did soften that blow. “And enjoying this drink with you.” She offered him a smile and took a sip from her lemonade. “How’s yours?” *** Kenny didn't say anything more on the subject, but he did perk up when she mentioned cake. "What? Where?" he asked. Ever since Mel and Jo began their little cooking thing together, he'd always loved what they made. It was also another thing he was going to miss. It was nice to have something other than frozen waffles for dinner.
"Tasty," he grinned. "Might need some more soon, though," he added, lifting up his glass a little.
*** “In the fridge,” Melissa replied nodding toward the refrigerator. “Everyone has a little cake they can decorate with whatever.” They obviously had extras too which would help in case anyone ended up wanting seconds. Melissa hoped they didn’t disappoint. “Have at it.”
At the mention of maybe needing a refill, Melissa smiled, laughing a bit. “Well, let me know when you finish,” she replied, taking another sip of her own. She was going to need a refill soon too. *** "Sweet," he said. He quickly finished off his drink - and handed his glass over to her, obviously asking for a refill - before he got up and headed over to the fridge. He saw the little mini cakes and took it out.
"Aw, how adorable," he snorted as he carried it over to the counter where they sat. He also went and got the frosting and other cake decorating things he needed.
*** Melissa stood to make a refill as Kenny headed over to the refrigerator and took out their mini cakes. It did make her smile some when he said they were adorable in his normal “Kenny” like way. “Well, there are extras so eat as many as you like...well, reasonably. Leave at a few for the others,” Melissa replied, shaking her head as she moved to the counter and reached for the bottle of vodka. She’d gone out earlier and splurged on the expensive stuff because she didn’t know how much longer she’d be in town to enjoy it anyway.
Adding in a good amount, she put it down and added in a decent dose of some blue raspberry lemonade. She stirred it and put in two ice cubes because you didn’t want it to get watered down that fast. Oh and another umbrella because why not? Melissa topped off her own drink and set them both down on the table, watching Kenny with amusement as he decorated his cake. *** "Leave some for the others? Lame," he grumbled a bit. He liked cake. It was something he didn't get to eat often growing up. Usually it was at a friend's birthday party, but other than that, not so much. But he figured she was right. He had to leave some for Tea and Ella and whoever else.
While she mixed their drinks, Kenny got set for cake decorating. He made the frosting orange with some food dye since it was his favorite color, then put a ton of it on the cake, covering up the whole thing. It might've been way too much but he didn't care.
"Thanks," he nodded when she handed him his drink, which he took a sip of. "Sometimes I wonder why I don't drink because this is delicious, but then I remember," he shrugged. He grabbed the black colored icing and began drawing boobs on his cake.
*** “Yes, the others,” Melissa emphasized the word as she took a sip of her drink. Orange and black...why was Melissa not surprised by this? She shook her head, laughing to herself as he drew some boobs on his cake. It was classic Kenny and yeah, she was going to miss it or she was thinking she would even if she knew once she was home, she’d forget all about him and everything else in Madison Valley.
“Well, you’ll get to see your sister again at least,” she replied when he remarked about how good the drink was, but then again, why he didn’t drink. “And thanks. I pride myself on my capability to mix a good drink. *** "I guess I can leave one for Ella," he said with a fake sigh. He finished drawing the boobs before adding some black frosting along the edges of the cake. Because cakes usually had that, right? He didn't know. He never decorated a cake before, he was just doing what he felt like doing.
"If I ever feel like drinking, I'll just ask you what's good," he said. "And yeah. I can't wait to see her again. It feels like such a long time since I've seen her."
*** Melissa smiled over her cup at the comment. If there was one person he’d probably miss a lot it was Ella. She felt bad for Ella and Kenny or any of the couples actually. She herself didn’t have anyone like that since Sam left. Oh well. Story of her life.
“Best idea you’ve ever had,” Melissa replied, laughing before she raised her glass. “To roomies, besties, and the hell of a good time we had in Madison Valley. Oh and to you getting to see your sister again.” *** He probably would miss Ella the most, but then he remembered that he’d forget about her and this place. Only that didn’t work as much with her as it did with others and that just annoyed the shit out of him.
He shrugged it off, deciding not to think about that right now. Instead, he just focused on the here and now, and right now, he was having a drink with Melissa. “Cheers,” he said, raising his glass and clinking it with hers, taking a sip.
“Okay, let’s have some cake,” he said, grabbing a fork. He took a bite and it was the best cake he ever tasted.
