Jo was pretty much torn about going home. On one hand, she'd get to see her dad again. She'd get to see David and his family, even though she had moved on from her former fiance. There were a lot of people she was looking forward to seeing again. People she missed dearly. But on the other hand, she'd be saying goodbye to the friends she made here in Madison Valley. She wouldn't miss Ella since they'd just be going home together. But she'd miss Kenny and Tea and their crazy antics. She'd miss Jesse and watching movies with him.
And of course, she'd miss Melissa. Ever since they had switched bodies and Jo had her magic, the two of them had grown close. While Jo was still (and probably always will be) a bit iffy about magic and the supernatural, she had come to appreciate Melissa. She had some difficulties controlling the magic while she had it. Thankfully there wasn't too much trouble, but Melissa was able to control it with ease and Jo had to admire her for it. They also started trying to cook recently and so far, most of their dishes turned out wonderful.
Curled up on the couch in the living room, she began thinking about not seeing Melissa and anyone ever again. The thought was unbearable and next thing she knew, she had tears running down her face and she was sniffling a bit. She had only stopped when she heard someone come in. She lifted her head up and saw Melissa.
"Hey," she said, smiling. "Sorry about this," she wiped her eyes with her hands. "Guess I've just been thinking things."
*** Melissa had also been thinking about things and had a few bouts of tears herself here and there since finding out that everyone was being sent home. At the moment, she’d managed to keep it under control, but there was always the chance of the flood coming on all over again. Any thoughts of saying goodbye to her friends, her roommates especially, caused a lump to rise in her throat and it took everything she had to swallow it back down. It wasn’t fair, but Madison Valley had always had the aspect: it could be a blessing and then again it could easily be a curse.
Though they hadn’t been close at first, having shared her magic with Jo after the body swap event, things had changed and for the better. The two were a lot closer now and Melissa enjoyed spending time with the brunette whenever possible. Their cooking session had gone lovely and she looked forward to more adventures in the kitchen with Jo, but now? That would be coming to an end and she would never see the young woman again. Tears burned in her eyes and Melissa took a deep breath, blinking them away rapidly. It made her heart ache.
Just then she heard sniffling coming from the living room and she headed over, uncertain which of her friends it could be until she spotted Jo on the couch, curled up and from the looks of it, she’d been crying. At her friend’s apology, Melissa merely shook her head. “It’s okay, Jo. I’ve been doing a lot of the same,” the witch replied, moving to take a seat beside her on the couch and put an arm around her friend’s shoulders. “It just sucks.” *** "Yeah, it really does," Jo sighed in agreement as she laid her head against Melissa's shoulders. She was sure the younger girl wouldn't mind. They had grown much closer and Jo felt comfortable around her.
"When I first arrived, I wanted to go home right away. And then there was the strange things that happened." Which sometimes still drove her crazy but nowadays she was a little more used to it when they happened. "I didn't know what to do at first, but luckily Ella kept me from going crazy. But after awhile, it wasn't just her. It was also you, Tea, Jesse, Kenny. Though I wonder about his sanity sometimes," she joked, laughing a bit through her tears.
"I know there's always a chance any of us could leave. I just wish we had more time."
*** Melissa didn’t mind at all and she moved to rest her head on top of Jo’s. “There is nothing we can do about it either,” she replied sadly. And there wasn’t. For all Melissa’s magic and the magic presence in this town, there was no power strong enough that could stop what Madison Valley was about to do and it sucked. All they could do was watch it happen and wait till they were sent back. A small comfort was that they would probably end up not remembering anyway, but that was also kind of sad. Even if it hurt, Melissa didn’t want to forget her friends.
“Me too. I mean, it was cool at first because like all my Circle was here, but then they left and I was just miserable. All of you kept me together too,” she replied honestly. “I don’t know what I would have done without you, Tea, and Kenny.” Melissa figured she probably would have ended up nothing more than a drunken mess and a high school drop out. The comment about Kenny did make Melissa laugh even with the growing lump in her throat and she nodded.
“I know. It’s always there, but yeah, it feels like there not enough time.” *** "Yeah. I mean, we never could do anything about what the Dome does but it just sucks even more now." She wished that magic was enough, that those powerful beings like Death and Dream and even Lucifer could do something about this, but not even they could stop the inevitable. Guess magic wasn't as great to have as she thought.
"Nah, we wouldn't let you go off the deep end," Jo told her. She cared about the younger girl and there was no way in hell she would've let Melissa become an alcoholic high school drop out. She was way more better than that and Jo knew it and she was glad she didn't end up like that.
"It sucks," she sighed. That was the only way she could think of to describe the situation. Or maybe there was but in more colorful words. "Maybe we should do something while we still have time, instead of moping around," she suggested.
*** Not even Death and her brother could do anything about this situation. Madison Valley was that powerful in the end. Not even the fucking devil himself. Yeah, magic wasn’t that great sometimes and this was obviously the moment it didn’t shine. “No, we couldn’t, but it sucks even more now like you said,” Melissa agreed, shaking her head. “What’s the point of powers if you can’t do anything with them in a case like this?”
At the words, the brunette chuckled softly. “See? I knew you guys were good for something,” she teased. At the mention of doing something, Melissa perked up a bit. “Anything in particular?” *** Jo sighed. "I don't know. Guess magic can't do everything, huh?" It would've been great if it could, but she supposed everything had to have limits and that included powers.
She stuck her tongue out a little then thought for a moment. She didn't have any specific idea in mind, she just wanted to do something rather than waste their last remaining time being all sad. "We can bake something," she suggested. "I think we have enough ingredients for a cake or some cookies. Or we can go swim. Or go out. Maybe bowling or seeing a movie?"
*** “Unfortunately, no. Magic can’t do everything even if we wish it otherwise,” Melissa replied softly and shook her head. She wished there was some spell or whatever, but she didn’t have anything that powerful up her sleeve.
At the options, Melissa chewed her lip in thought for moment, but she quickly made her mind up. “Cooking. We should bake a cake in honor of us and the housemates,” she replied, smiling. *** At Melissa's suggestion, Jo broke into a smile. The first one since they had began talking. "That's a great idea," she said. Wiping her tears with the back of her hand, she got up and lead the way into the kitchen where she quickly checked which ingredients they had.
"We have enough for a vanilla cake or a chocolate cake. Which one do you think we should make?" she asked.
*** “I think vanilla and then people can add whatever they want to it,” Melissa replied, standing and moving to trail her friend into the kitchen. Yes, keeping busy would help them both and doing something together? That was no doubt the best medicine. Plus, Melissa was actually finding she liked to cook thanks to Jo. It was sad in a way because once she went back home she would forget that she liked cooking at all. *** "Good idea. Maybe we can make mini cakes and we can decorate our own," she suggested. Of course, she didn't mind decorating it for them. She even had a few ideas as to what they'd like too. Ella would definitely want a bunch of candles and fire. Kenny might want something gory, like lots of strawberry syrup for blood. But maybe they'll just let them do what they wanted.
Either way, they had all the things they needed to make some cake and she started getting out the ingredients they needed as well as bringing up the recipe on her tablet that she had bookmarked.
*** Mini cakes actually sounded like a good idea given on different everyone was when it came to food choices. “Actually, I think we should do that,” she replied. “That way people get their own cake to do with what they want or if they want we can decorate them.” It sounded like a good idea to Melissa. She switched the oven on with touch of her telekinesis and started going through the cabinets for the necessary utensils, a bowl, and the pans. They were going to need to use the mixer for this.
“If it wasn’t for you, I never would have figured out I like cooking,” Melissa said after a moment. She set down the bowl and looked over at Jo. *** "Okay, let's do that then," Jo said. It wasn't as if any of them were picky about their food. She was sure they'd like the way she and Melissa would've decorated it, but she figured it would be fun to give them the option of doing it their way. To make it their own.
Once they got everything, Jo began with putting the flour and other dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. "To be honest, I wouldn't have either," she said with a laugh. "I never cared for cooking, but I enjoy doing it now."
*** Considering everyone’s unique personality, Melissa figured it might be the best route to take. Besides, they had a ton of frosting from the store already stocked in the fridge and some frozen fruit for the times when people actually did want to be healthy around here. Again, being this kind of house, there were also a ton of sprinkles and the like for the ice cream that made up a good portion of the freezer. The thought did make her smile because it was just a representation of all of them. It would sad when they all went home and this home they had built disappeared for good.
“I guess it helps to do it with another person,” Melissa replied, laughing too. “Well, at least another person as cool as you.” *** "Guess so," Jo said. It was kind of boring when you were cooking alone. Not to mention a lot more hard work was put into it. She had never noticed before, but she did liked cooking with her former fiance's mother whenever she visited them for Thanksgiving or Christmas. With someone helping, it was a lot easier.
"And hey, no one is as cool as us," she grinned as she started mixing, adding the eggs and vanilla as well.
*** Melissa moved to start greasing the pan, but smiled when Jo pointed out that no one was as cool as them. “If Madison ends, no one will be as cool as us ever again,” she replied softly. Not that it mattered if the town went under anyway. They would be sent back and the townspeople? Well, she wasn’t all too sure what was going to happen to them. Maybe this place would just go back to being a normal town.
“Anything else you need?” Melissa asked, looking over at the brunette. *** "Nope," Jo agreed as she sighed a little. She busied herself with mixing the batter, and yes, she indulged herself a little. She let Melissa lick the spoon too if she wanted. Part of her wished they'd gone with chocolate instead, but vanilla was the better choice. It usually went with anything.
"I think we're good here," she told her. She poured the batter into the pan and put it in the oven, setting the timer. "Now we wait. And we have some batter left over for more."
*** Melissa took a seat at the table, amused when Jo licked the spoon before pouring in the batter and setting it in the oven. “Then we’ll make the rest,” she replied. Suddenly, she wrapped her arms around the other woman and pulled her into a tight hug.
“I know I won’t remember you or any of this, but I don’t think that somewhere in my heart there won’t be a spot that does at least have an inkling about all of it. Thank you for being my friend and there for me. For cooking with me and just yeah, everything,” she said softly, tears burning in her eyes. *** "Yep," Jo said but before she could say anything else, she was suddenly being wrapped in a hug. It took her a moment but she was quick to recover and she hugged Melissa back just as tightly.
"Oh, Mel," she said, choking up a little. "Thank you for being such a great friend. I'm so glad we got to know each other here." She wished she had more time with the younger girl, but unfortunately, that just wasn't happening. She hated this but there was nothing to do but to just make sure their last remaining moments were a happy time.
She pressed a quick kiss to the top of Melissa's head before pulling away. "C'mon, let's go see if there's anything to watch on Netflix while we wait for the cake to bake."
