Since arriving in Madison Valley, Bellamy had been forced to spend a lot of time coming to terms with who he was and the things he’d done. Of course, the worst of that was, without a doubt, what he’d unintentionally done to Octavia when he’d mistakenly taken Pike’s side. He’d been trying to live that down for over a year now, and it didn’t seem to be getting any easier. Octavia, maybe, was softening a little. She was talking to him, and letting him see Aurie...but the others, well, that was still touch and go to say the least.
So that was why he tensed a little bit when he saw Raven while he was walking down the street after visiting the grocery store, plastic bag in his hands.
Bellamy and Raven had a complicated past. There was no way around that. They weren’t always the best of friends, although he didn’t have anything against her now. In fact, as she drew closer, he tried to summon a smile, although he was pretty sure he failed terribly.
“Hey,” he said, basically because saying something seemed less rude than saying nothing and trying to just pass her by.

Raven didn't mind so much when Bellamy stopped her on the sidewalk. She'd actually been on her way to the same grocery store he'd just been to. She didn't mind stopping to chat for a bit, considering herself one of the more friendly ones from home, or at least she hoped she was. She also didn't have the same issues with Bellamy some of the others had. Of course, at the time he was dealing with Pike, she was dealing with the pesky AI in her head.
Still, she was loyal to those she lived with, and that was admittedly partly why she kept her distance. Things were getting better in that regard, though.
"Bellamy, hey," she replied with a slight smile. "What's up?"
***
Bellamy shrugged nonchalantly, glad that she didn’t seem angry with him. He was tired of being on the defensive all the time and he was tired of all the people from back home disliking him. He had friends like Katniss here that weren’t from back home, but he related with the people from home in a way that he couldn’t with anyone else. Their horror was the kind you kind of had to live through to understand.
“Not a lot. Grocery shopping. Even after a year it still kind of blows my mind how much food they have here.” It was hard to get over. At least he’d learned not to make himself sick by eating too much anymore.
“How are you? How’s everyone else?”
***
“The food here is probably the greatest thing about this place,” Raven said, grateful for things like grocery stores. That was far from the best thing, really. The intact buildings, non-radioactive air, and lack of people trying to kill them were also bonuses about this place. Food was a lot less controversial to talk about, though.
“I’m good. Murphy and I are still good.” That was a little strange to say out loud, but it was nice. “Everyone else seems fine. Octavia is. And Aurie.”
She was pretty sure Octavia’s well being would be something he’d want to know about.
***
It definitely was. Despite Octavia’s attitude towards him, his heart hadn’t changed. She was still the most important thing in his life, and he’d die for her without a second though. And Aurie. He’d made a mistake, but it didn’t change his feelings, other than to make him feel guilty and want to protect her even more, even if she didn’t need it.
He didn’t give a shit about Murphy. He still thought the guy was an asshole and that didn’t seem likely to change soon. As soon as you started to think the guy was okay, he did something to take you back to your original opinion of him.
“You think I could stop by sometime?”
***
"That's probably more up to Octavia," Raven told him. "Though I'd be cool with it myself. She's been letting you come by more and more, though. I bet she's be okay with it, too."
Either way, Raven wasn't going to make the decision. She didn't think Octavia would mind, but she also knew there was chance she would. If that was the case, Raven did not want to be on the other end of her wrath.
She smiled a little. "I'm glad things aren't as hostile."
She liked Bellamy well enough. It was nice that things weren't as tense as they were.
***
Bellamy was glad, too, although he still hated the distance that existed between himself and his sister. It had never been there before and it was causing a hole in him that nothing could ever fill.
But it wasn’t like he could explain that to Raven in any way that made the least bit of sense.
“I guess I can stop by and see what she says.”
The worst she could do was kick him out, and he’d survived that before.
