WHO: Dawn Summers and Magnus Chase
WHAT: Catching up
WHEN: Today
WHERE: Starbucks
WARNINGS: none
STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Magnus was glad to get a chance to hang out with Dawn. He’d talked to her a while ago and really had hit it off with her (or so he’d thought), but then he’d met Ian and things had moved ahead there and he’d kind of lost contact with everyone but Ian for a while.
Now that that was over, he was kind of free again. It still sucked that things had ended badly and they weren’t on very good terms, but he was trying to see the good in it, because that was what Magnus did. It was how he got through a life that had kind of been filled with all kinds of crap.
He’d agreed to meet her at Starbucks on a weekday afternoon (now that school was out, it was really the best time), and had gotten there early so that they could have a nice place to sit where they could talk without other people hanging on their every word. That sucked and he wasn’t a fan of it.
When he saw her, he smiled and raised a hand in a wave, genuinely happy.

Dawn hated knowing that things ended badly between Magnus and Ian because she considered both of them friends, but she was glad to be reconnecting with Magnus now that school was out and they had more free time. Especially now that there wasn’t a freak snowstorm keeping them from having fun.
Luckily, she didn’t have to work today, so she had plenty of time to hang out and she grinned when she spotted Magnus already at a great table. “Hey, you need a drink or anything?” she asked, stopping by the table to greet him before heading up to the counter to get herself something.
***
“Sure,” he said. “Whatever you’re having is fine.” He didn’t know a lot about fancy coffees or anything like that, and he wasn’t very picky, so whatever she chose was just fine.
When she returned, he took his drink and smiled at her.
“I feel like I haven’t seen you forever. I’m glad we can catch up.”
***
“Yeah, same,” Dawn said, handing over a mocha chip frappuccino and setting a variety of pastries in the middle of the table. She wasn’t sure how long they’d be hanging out and some sugary treats were always a good thing.
She hadn’t been very social for the past month or so, in part because of her concerns about Buffy, which were no longer concerns since Spike remembered things now. And with school out, she had more time to spend with her friends. “What are you up to this summer?”
***
“Nothing much,” he said. “I guess I haven’t really been doing all that much since me and Ian broke up.” He was still upset about that, but it was what it was and it was hurting a little less every day. He was sad at the way things turned out, but he thought he’d made the right decision.
“Thought I’d go hiking, swimming, you know, the normal summer things. What about you? Any plans?”
***
Dawn hadn’t really thought too much about how to spend her summer. Or really the rest of her time here, now that she was graduated. “I may pick up some more hours at the store,” she said. “But other than that, I don’t really know. Maybe hanging out with Carl some.” They were still both pretty tentative about the relationship thing, but she felt like there might be something there.
“I’m sorry things didn’t work out with you and Ian.”
***
“Carl? He seems nice.” He didn’t know him well, but he’d seen him around school and stuff. All the teenagers there at least knew each other by sight, he figured. “Are you guys like...a thing?”
He sighed.
“Yeah...Ian changed. I don’t know why. I was worried about him until he turned into an asshole.”
***
That wasn’t an easy question to answer and Dawn sort of shrugged. “Um… kind of?” she said. “We went to prom together and we’ve been hanging out.” And they’d shared a goodnight kiss after prom, but they hadn’t really had a conversation about what that meant.
“Ian’s… been having a lot of problems,” she said. She wasn’t sure how much Magnus knew about Ian’s time in the clinic and wasn’t going to bring it up since it wasn’t her information to share. “Are you seeing anyone now?”
***
Magnus didn’t really know anything about Ian’s time in the clinic. Ian hadn’t told him anything, nor had any of Ian’s friends, so he was completely in the dark about that. He just knew that Ian had been acting really weird. He was a little better now, but Magnus couldn’t help but be a little gunshy around him.
“No,” he said. “I mean, I went to prom with Usagi, but just as friends.”
He wouldn’t mind going on a date with someone. He just hadn’t really met anyone he wanted to go on a date with yet.
***
Dawn was a little surprised when he said that. She’d assumed that since he was dating Ian, he was gay. “Oh? Do you like girls too?” she asked. Immediately, she blushed and realized that it was probably an incredibly inappropriate question.
“Sorry, you don’t have to answer that,” she said. “Sometimes the words are faster than my brain to mouth filter.”
***
“No, it’s cool,” he said. Magnus wasn’t the sort of person who got bent out of shape about these things, so he waved away her concern.
“But yeah, I do. I like both. I guess it depends most on the person, you know? If I like a guy, I’ll date a guy, and if I like a girl, I’ll date a girl.”
He didn’t think that was weird. Maybe it was, though.
***
It wasn’t weird, but it wasn’t something Dawn really considered as being an option for some reason, even though it made a lot of sense. “I’m sure you’ll meet someone you like,” she said. “But in the meantime, let’s make sure we spend more time together.”
She still wasn’t great at the whole being friends thing and she wanted to be better and she really did enjoy Magnus’s company.
***
“I’d like that,” he said. And he really would. He liked Dawn, even though he didn’t know her too well. He definitely would like to get to know her better.
“So...about this Carl guy,” he said with a grin, settling back to listen to her story.
***
Dawn blushed, but realized that she wouldn’t mind getting Magnus’s perspective on things, so she settled in to tell him about their handful of dates.
