...and she was falling. She barely had time to think, barely had time to register the shock that Thanos had actually done it. That he’d killed her. That she only had seconds to live. Somewhere in the back of her mind flickered the thought that it meant that he actually had cared for her...that he’d even loved her...for some definition of love, but that thought flitted through her brain so quickly she didn’t even have time to process it…She closed her eyes tightly.
And then…thud.
She expected darkness, then. Or a quick moment of horrible pain, and then peace. But none of that came. The impact had barely hurt...it was more like falling out of a tree than getting thrown off a cliff to her death. Opening her eyes, she looked around her, blinking.
She was in Madison Valley?
She certainly hadn’t expected that. Looking down at herself, she saw that her hands were bleeding where she’d landed on them, and her knee was a bit scraped, but nothing seemed to be broken and she was in one piece. She got to her feet carefully, and finding herself to be steady, started walking. There was only one place she could go, only one place in her mind she wanted to be.
Home.
Home with Peter and Evie and Jay and Groot and the little family she’d made in Madison Valley. She’d forgotten all about them in the time that she’d been gone, but the emotions came flooding back now that she found herself here again. It didn’t take her long to find her way, and finding the front door unlocked, she stepped inside.
“Peter?”
***
Gamora was dead. Peter had to go watch it and couldn’t stop it and then Thanos had snapped his fingers and it was going to be all over...he was fading away and even if he hadn’t won against Thanos he was going to go be with Gamora.
Only he ended up back in Madison Valley.
She was gone and he had to keep living without her. Why was it everyone went away and left him? Peter was sticking it out with Evie and Jay and the others but he wasn’t happy about it. In fact there’d been a lot of shouting and drinking at first. It had hurt Evie and Jay just as much to know that they’d lost her but it didn’t help him enough to just be there for them.
So when he heard her voice at first he thought he was imagining things and didn’t say anything back.
***
It wasn’t actually all that strange for the house to be quiet this time of day. Evie and Jay were probably at school - or at least off somewhere else pretending they were at school. Peter could have been at work, or out doing something. Still, she was disappointed when nobody answered her, because she’d wanted to see him again so very much.
She hated the way they’d left things, with him unable to stop Thanos from taking her away. He’d tried to keep his promise, and she knew that hadn’t been easy for him. At least she’d been able to tell him she loved him before Thanos had whisked them out of there. It hadn’t been the first time, but she’d meant it a little more, because even then she knew it was a possibility she wouldn’t see him again.
Walking around the house they’d bought together, she felt a little contentment. It was like being on the ship, in a way. It was a home they’d build, a place for themselves and for the people they loved. Home. It had been such a foreign word for her for so long, but with Peter, she’d found two of them.
Walking into the living room, she stopped short when she realized that the house wasn’t, in fact, empty. Peter was on the couch, and he didn’t look so good. Maybe he just hadn’t heard her...although that was unlikely. She’d been plenty loud.
“Peter?” She repeated, only this time there was a bit more worry in it.
***
Peter’s head jerked up when he heard her voice again. This time he knew he hadn’t imagined it. “Gamora?” He looked like he wasn’t quite sure if he believed what he was seeing. He’d tried to kill her but Thanos had made his gun shoot bubbles and then he’d taken her. Having to keep his promise to kill her had almost broken him. To find out she was dead anyway had pretty much finished the job.
“Gamora!” Once it finally filtered through his mind that she was really there he was up off the couch in a flash to catch her up in his arms.
***
Gamora actually smiled - she couldn’t help it. And she hugged him back tightly...as tightly as she could because with everything terrible that was happening back home, she wanted to cling to the good things, and he was one of the best things she had. If not the best.
“You’re still here,” she said, and the relief in her voice was palpable. “Have you...do you know…” She had to clear her throat because of the emotion and despair that almost choked her. “Thanos is going to win.”
***
Well he could answer, or he could do what he wanted to instead of answering. Which he decided to do, Peter just pulled back so he could put his hands on the side of her face and kiss her. He had been so afraid he wouldn’t get a chance to do this again, that he was going to be here without her he couldn’t wait any longer.
“I don’t care. He doesn’t win here.”
***
Gamora could have pulled away, but that was the very last thing she wanted to do. She had been terrified - more than terrified, certain, that she was never going to see him again, that she was going to die without kissing him again. And it felt like a victory to just stand here with him. So she kissed him back without holding back at all, allowing herself to collapse against him at the end.
She shivered a little, allowing herself to feel some of the terror now that she was safe.
“He could find this place. He could destroy this place too.”
***
All he felt was relief. She was here. Gamora was here. “He’s not coming here. And he can’t take you off anywhere to find the stones even if he did.” And if he showed up Peter was going to kick his ass no matter what it took. He’d have a second chance to do it and he wouldn’t miss this time.
“You’re home okay?”
***
He had a point. Nobody could leave this place, not even Thanos. He’d just be stuck here like everyone else. That didn’t mean he could’t hurt her, but Gamora….just didn’t think he would, not without a reason. That thought set uncomfortably on her heart, though. She didn’t want him to actually care about her. It was disgusting to her, after all he’d done.
So instead, she shook the thoughts away and turned back to Peter, this time with a little bit of a smile. She was home. And it was exactly where she wanted to be. She leaned in to kiss him again, and then after a moment, pulled back, resting her forehead against his.
“Evie and Jay. Are they still here?”
It had been a long time for her. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed here.
***
“They’re still here and going to be fucking glad to see you.” They’d had to see him come back in an absolute frenzy and learn that their mom was dead. He’d broke their hearts with that one. “I should call them. They’ll want to see you.”
And normally he might want her all to himself but Evie and Jay had taken a leap to take them on as parental figures and it had just about killed them to lose any of that and Peter knew it.
***
Gamora wanted to see them too, very, very much. She could only imagine how upset they’d been when they’d thought she was dead. She knew it was like - she and Peter both did - to have family and to lose it, and there was nothing in the world that was more painful. She hated that it had happened, that she’d been forced to do that to them, but there was nothing that could be done about it. At least she’d been brought back here, or every one of their fears would have been true.
She nodded enthusiastically.
“We can all have dinner,” she said, even though it was early. It just seemed right ot be here as a family, as their family. It was going to be easier to accept this place as her home now, since she had nowhere to go back to; only her own death.
“Of course,” she said, looking at him with a bit of an impish twinkle in her eye. “After they go to bed tonight…”
She’d let him finish that thought.
***
“After they go to bed we’ll catch up…” He pulled her in for another kiss and smiled against her lips. “...really, really catch up. Maybe a few times. You know just to make sure we’re caught up on everything.”
***
Gamora rolled her eyes as she kissed him just because...well, it was Peter and Peter could make a saint want to roll her eyes. And she was definitely not that. But still, it was so nice to be back here with him, to be safe...that she just kissed him back and laughed a little, before resting her head on his shoulder.
“Yes,” she said, the laughter apparent in her voice, “We can catch up tonight as many times as you like.”
