Lucas was definitely starting to feel more like normal. Things with Riley were going really well all things considered and school was almost over! He was super excited to start asking around at the stable about getting a part time job for over the summer. He wanted to be doing something all summer instead of just goofing off with his friends. The other thing he was looking forward to was his dad finally proposing to his mom. It still hadn't happened yet, which was super annoying.
When he came home from school, his dad was home but his mom wasn't and Lucas took that as a sign that he could ask without ruining the surprise. "Daaaaad," he called as he toed off his shoes at the front door. He dropped his backpack there, too, and made his way into the kitchen in the hopes of having a snack before dinner. "I'm home!" Obviously, but he also didn't want to just shout his question out across the house either.

Cameron was a very busy guy these days. Between still holding onto his security job and trying to run the tea shop, he had a lot on his plate. Forget trying to spend any time with his family while he was at it. He’d been upstairs putting laundry away, forever impressed that Lucas kept a fairly tidy room for a teenage boy when he’d popped in there to drop off a pile there, when he heard the kid come in, finished up quickly and came back down to find him in the kitchen.
“Hey.” He didn’t stop Lucas from snacking, never would, but would let him know: “Lasagne for dinner so don’t fill up.”
Knowing what being a teenager was like, he didn’t actually think that was going to be a problem.

Lucas had definitely noticed the lack of Dad lately, but he also understood why so he always tried to chip in around the house where he could. He wasn't quite as good at laundry or cleaning as he could be, but he made more of an effort to keep things neat and orderly as best he could. Plus, he did well in school, came home by curfew, and didn't get into trouble. Those were the ways he knew he could help out without causing his parents' more anxiety.
"Got it," he replied about what was for dinner and switched his snack trajectory from chips to an apple. "Sooooooo." Lucas thought he was being subtle, dragging the word out. "Got any plans coming up?" He was fishing to see if his dad had at least thought about when to propose.
***
Cameron wasn’t stupid. He caught on immediately that Lucas was fishing for something. The problem was that he didn’t catch onto what he was fishing for right away, wound up just frowning in confusion. Just a touch of suspicion.
“Nothing out of the ordinary. Why? What’re you after?”
If he knew what the answer actually was, he’d have responded a lot differently. Cameron knew that Lucas was excited for his parents to get engaged, that he was young and impulsive and didn’t fully understand why things couldn’t just happen right away. He’d learned something from the issues with Riley a bit back, but Cameron wasn’t optimistic enough to think he’d learned enough.

It was Lucas' turn to frown when his Dad said there wasn't anything interesting happening anytime soon. "Really?" That was super disappointing to hear and he sort of slumped into a seat at the kitchen table. "I thought you were gonna propose to Mom soon. We found her engagement ring ages ago."
Just because it hadn't worked out with him and Riley when he'd proposed didn't mean it wouldn't go well between his parents. They'd been together for ages and they were older, so it wasn't like there was any worry in his mind that they wouldn't get engaged and married. He took a bite of his apple in probably the most disappointed kind of way possible.
"I thought you'd ask soon." Was he having second thoughts or something?
***
For a second, Cameron stared. The next he was laughing quietly to himself, shaking his head as he moved to join Lucas at the table. “Shoulda called that one.”
Lucas was so invested, and Cameron couldn’t really blame him. He wanted a complete family, his parents to be together forever and that was a good life to have. Cameron hadn’t had a perfect life or anything but he’d had a family who had loved him and loved each other. It had been a good environment to be a rough age in.
“Look. Remember how we talked about timing? Same deal. There’s a right time to ask, and we’re waiting for it to come around. I can’t tell you when it’s going to happen, but it’s going to, okay?”
***
Lucas looked over at his Dad as he sat down next to him, but he already had a sinking feeling in his stomach that he wasn’t going to like the answer. Sure enough, he wasn’t exactly pleased to hear that there wasn’t a right time to ask just yet.
“Sometime soon?” he asked, and there was a hint of attitude there because he was tired of waiting. They were a family and maybe he’d been okay with them adopting him together without being married before, but now he wasn’t. He wanted his Mom and Dad to be husband and wife.
***
“What did I just say?” Cameron laughed. “Come on, man. Give me a break. It’s gotta be right. You don’t want your mom to be telling the story of it like oh yeah it was just some Tuesday afternoon, not at all memorable, do you?”
It had to be the right time, and it should be special. He had no idea how her first husband had popped the question, had never asked and didn’t want to know, but it was important to Cameron that it was something to remember for the rest of their lives.
***
Even though Lucas didn’t want to admit it, he knew his dad had a point. “It wouldn’t be just some Tuesday if you proposed,” he pointed out, still with that touch of attitude. He’d feel bad about that later because that was the kind of kid he was. At least he didn’t have any intention of harping on them to have kids. He was their kid.
He took another bite of his apple and sort of reset. “I just want you guys to be happy. And official,” he added, and this time his tone was a little apologetic. He was just impatient about everything.
“Will it at least be before school ends?” Lucas doubted his dad would give him any sort of timeline, but it was worth a shot.
***
Admonishment for the attitude, Cameron was only willing to put up with so much, was a second away when the kid’s whole demeanor shifted. Okay. Apologetic and understanding that he was acting out was better than the attitude and Cameron never liked to have to scold him.
“I can’t promise that. But let’s see.” He leaned back in his seat a little, thoughtfully. “School’s out, when? End of the month?” A lot sooner than Cameron had realized. It was only a couple of weeks away now. “Probably not. But I’ll tell you what. You have my word we’ll be officially engaged by your birthday.”
That was a hell of a long way off.
