WHO: Carmilla and Jo
WHAT: A random encounter
WHEN: Friday morning
WHERE: Starbucks
WARNINGS: None
STATUS: Closed/Completed gdoc
For most of her life, Carmilla had been nocturnal. She was always awake during the night and asleep during the day. It probably had something to do with being a vampire, but she couldn't be so sure anymore. She felt like she'd been like this her whole life, not just after she'd been turned but also before.
And because she'd been awake all night again, she had slept in. Luckily, she woke up in time to get get a quick drink from Starbucks before she was due for work. Well, it would've been quick if the line wasn't moving so slow.
"Ugh, seriously? Can't this line go any faster?" she groaned, complaining to no one in particular. She didn't care if anyone happen to hear, though. She was tired and a bit grumpy, and just really wanted her caffeine.
***
Jo was, to put it lightly, a coffee addict. It wasn’t that noticeable really, but she needed it to help her get out of bed most mornings - though that was also because she was often somewhat hungover. Working until she was worn out had started to help with being able to sleep deep enough not to have nightmares - and the people she occasionally slept with helped with that, too - but overall her regular coping mechanism was alcohol.
At the moment, she was absently tapping an empty reusable coffee cup against her hand as she, too, impatiently waited for the line to move. At the words behind her that pretty much echoed what she’d just been thinking, she glanced over her shoulder and gave the woman a faint smile.
“I was just thinking the same thing.”
***
"Seriously. I bet she's ordering some kind of fancy drink with a bunch of caramel and whipped cream and all kinds of crap," she said, nodding to the woman who was currently at the counter and placing her order, seeming to take a long time to do so. Or maybe it was just Carmilla being tired and grumpy that everything just seemed to go slow for her.
"I mean, do people really need to add all that? Just give me coffee and I'm happy."
***
Jo had to laugh at the woman’s words a bit, shaking her head. “Same here - I take it black all the way through. I only come to Starbucks because it’s so close to my apartment, to be honest.” Shoulders lifted and fell in a small shrug as she glanced back up the line, then back to the woman she’d been speaking with.
“I should probably consider switching coffee shops...but they’re probably all this crowded in the morning, huh?”
***
"Black is the best," Carmilla agreed with a grin. "But a little cream and sugar doesn't hurt either." That was pretty much the only way she took her coffee. Definitely none of that caramel and whipped cream crap.
"There's actually a coffee shop by my work, but they told me the machines are all broken this morning, so here I am," she shrugged. It was annoying because she did like the coffee there. Oh well. Hopefully it'll be fixed tomorrow.
***
“I get all my sweetness from whatever pastry or doughnut I’m dunking in the coffee,” Jo replied, giving her a light grin. Nodding as she went on, the blonde hunter shook her head in sympathy.
“All of their machines? That sounds like the kind of thing that could kill a coffee shop’s business.” As they shuffled forward, she held out her hand. “I’m Jo Harvelle, by the way.”
***
"Ooh, that's always good," Carmilla said with a grin of her own. Coffee and donuts were the best. Especially if it was coffee and Timbits from Tim Horton's. When she thought of that, she inwardly sighed a little. She missed Timmies.
"Yep. And I know. Luckily this is the first time it's happened, but hopefully it doesn't again. Their coffee is actually pretty good." And there wasn't as much of a crowd there as Starbucks, which was one of the reasons why she liked it.
"Carmilla Karnstein," she smiled, shaking the other woman's hand. "So how long have you been here?" She was sure she hadn't met her before. Maybe she'd seen her around but she couldn't be sure when.
***
“I’ll be crossing my fingers for you,” Jo replied after letting her hand go. “Nice to meet you, Carmilla. I’ve been here…” She thought about it for a moment, then went on. “Since the beginning of February. The first, in fact. I didn’t realize it’s been that long. I guess time really does fly, huh?”
Jo gave a light shrug, before returning her attention to Carmilla. “How about you?”
***
"I've been here since the end of November," Carmilla replied. "And yeah, it sure does. Sometimes I can't believe it's been that long. I feel like Toronto was a lifetime ago sometimes."
Not as much as her mortal life, but something similar. The one difference was she remembered Toronto and being with Laura. Her mortal life? She didn't remember much, if anything at all. Now she was living a new life in Madison Valley. And it wasn't so bad.
***
“So you’re from Toronto?” Jo asked it out of casual curiosity as they moved forward again. “I’ve never been to Canada. Is it really cold all year ‘round?” Grinning to show she was mostly kidding, the blonde studied the other woman, a little relieved to hear that she wasn’t yet another person who’d been in Madison Valley for years.
There were times when she just didn’t think she’d be able to catch up to everyone else with having only been there a few months.
***
"Yes," Carmilla replied. "I'm originally from Styria, though. But I was living in Toronto before I came here."
She glared at Jo but then rolled her eyes, snorting a bit. "Yes, there's a snow blizzard everyday. We also eat syrup flavoured snow and watch hockey all the time," she replied sarcastically. She grinned, though, showing that she was obviously joking around.
"What about you? Where are you from?"
***
“I haven’t heard of Styria before,” she said, then grinned at the glare and the sarcasm that followed.
“I’m from Nebraska. Middle of nowhere, really. Grew up in a saloon, until it was burned down a few years ago, than I was on the road off an on for a while.” Jo hesitated, then gave a small shrug. “I think this is the longest I’ve been in one spot for a while, actually.
***
"It's in Austria," Carmilla told her. "I lived there for awhile before I moved to Toronto with my girlfriend. Well, ex, I suppose." And by awhile, she totally meant over three hundred years. Being a vampire meant she had lived several years.
She nodded. "Well, it's not like you have a choice," she shrugged. "But if you did, would you have stayed here? Or moved on to the next town?"
***
“Then you’re a long way from home,” Jo commented, moving up again since they were getting closer to the front of the line.
“Honestly, I probably would have moved on.” Which meant she wouldn’t have the friendships or other connections she did right now, but maybe it also meant she wouldn’t have gone through some of the dome’s craziness. “What about you?”
***
"Yeah, no kidding." But Carmilla didn't really care. She didn't really have many good memories of Styria. The only good thing that happened was that she met Laura while attending university there.
She nodded as she glanced at the line, seeing she was next after a couple more people. "Same, probably. Unless I found someone to settle down with." She almost had that. Toronto had been her settling place for awhile. She turned and saw she was up, so she quickly ordered her coffee then stepped aside to let Jo place her order.
***
“Really? I’ve never thought about settling down with someone myself.” It still weirded Jo out a little to know that there had once been a version of her in Madison Valley who’d been engaged to Sam Winchester, of all people, but she tried not to think too hard about that. She fell silent when Carmilla stepped up to place her order, then did the same herself while passing over her personal cup, keeping the lid in her hand.
After she paid, Jo moved over to stand next to Carmilla at the end of the counter while they waited for their drinks. “At least since we didn’t get all the fancy additives, it shouldn’t take too long, right?”
***
"I did, a couple times. The first time didn't work it. The second time, it probably would've if I wasn't brought here." For sure if she had stayed in Toronto, she would still be with Laura. Maybe they'd get married in the future or something. Who knows.
Carmilla stepped aside when Jo ordered. She grinned a little. "Nah, probably not," she said. Sure enough, it had only taken the barista a few minutes to make their drinks. "See, now we got our delicious, heavenly caffeine without having to wait," she said, taking a small sip of her coffee.
***
“It always seemed like something way off in the future for me, if it ever happened at all.” Though aside from her parents, she didn’t know too many couples who survived hunting - and even with that, her dad had died when she was just a kid. Maybe it wasn’t really something hunters got the chance to do.
After their drinks came, Jo put the lid on her cup and grinned at Carmilla. “Which means that the world won’t end today, at least.” She lifted the cup and took a slow sip, relishing the burn of the bitter drink, then lowered it again. “It was great meeting you, but I should get going.”
***
Carmilla laughed. "Good thing for the world," she said. "And yeah, same here. See you around, Jo." She gave the other woman a quick nod before she left, heading out the door.
