There were so many things to be found here in Madison Valley that simply weren't available back home. Or, things that if they were available were so expensive as to be impossible to procure, even to Holden's rather padded budget.
One of those things was baked goods. Flour - real, wheat flour - was very hard to come by, not to mention the eggs, butter, and other ingredients that made them taste so good. Sure, they tried to synthesize it all over the solar system, but as an Earther, Holden knew that there really wasn't a true replacement for the real thing.
That knowledge was brought home as he bit into a chocolate donut, fresh-baked from the local bakery. It was like tasting paradise. Anyone who thought that Earth wasn't necessary only needed to taste one of these donuts and they'd protect the planet forever. He sat on a bench almost as an afterthought as he proceeded to eat the entire half-dozen that he'd bought. He figured he was going to have to do some exercising lately...or he was going to go home twice the size he had been when he arrived.
Hearing footsteps, he opened his eyes and saw a young man approaching, a young man who had clearly seen his ecstasy at the divine baked goods. He was a little embarrassed, but to hell with it. It was delicious.
"Have you had these?" He asked, holding up a small part of a donut that was all that was left of the bag now. "They're incredible."
