Who: Sarah Bailey & Phoebe Halliwell When: May 3, late afternoon Where: Magic Alley What: Two witches meet Rating: Low! Status: Complete GDoc
Ever since she came here, Sarah had grown to love learning about the various magic that other people had here. She herself was a witch and her magic was more on the Wiccan side. But learning about how other witches used magic had been quite fascinating. She had met a few already and became good friends with some of them, and hopefully she could meet some more.
She had decided to drop by Magic Ally on her way back home from school. It wasn't the first time this week that she'd visit the magic store. She enjoyed looking at the various spellbooks and other things. She wondered if Hermione would allow her to work part time or during the summer.
She picked up a book that looked interesting and started browsing through it, glancing at the spells and wondering if she'd wanted to try any of them.

Magic Ally had quickly become one of Phoebe’s favorite places to visit, and it was also a reason why her initial stipend had nearly disappeared altogether. She knew that she needed to find a job, and fast, but she kept putting it off. Mentally, she made a note to definitely get that taken care of within the next week, then set it aside as she studied a display of tarot cards.
She’d never needed them to learn her own fate or that of others - she had her visions, and the cards were more Paige’s thing - but she still liked to study the artwork and check out the different interpretations. Absently, she stepped back from the display, only to immediately bump into someone behind her, and she turned quickly.
“Oops! I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to bump into you.” Honestly, this was the second time she’d done that since her arrival - though the first time could be excused since it had been while she had no memory of who she was. This time? She was just being a klutz.
*** Sarah wasn't really paying attention either. She was too into the spellbook to really take notice of her surroundings and it wasn't until she felt someone bump into her.
"Oh, no worries, it's fine," she told the woman with a smile. "I wasn't exactly paying attention myself. A bit too into this spellbook," she held it up with a sheepish grin. She looked and noticed the tarot cards. "Were you looking at those?" she pointed. "I've never tried using tarot cards yet."
***
Phoebe returned the smile, then tilted her head as she studied the spellbook and gave a nod. “I get it - I’ve been distracted by things like that, too.” At the question, she glanced back at the tarot display and smiled.
“I was. I’ve never needed them myself, but my younger sister Paige loves tarot cards. She had a set back home and I was considering buying her a new deck to replace it, or saving it for her birthday in a few months.” She picked up one of the books and held it up to the other woman to show her. “I just love the pictures, personally.”
*** "Oh, that's nice," Sarah smiled. Both that she was thinking of her little sister and also that her little sister was here in the first place. Sarah herself was an only child but she figured having family here had to be nice. There were times when she wished her dad would show up, but she was fine with Sonya and Cassie. They were her family now.
"Same here, actually. I do like looking at the pictures," she said. "But like I said, I haven't learned how to use tarot cards yet, so I don't know what they all mean." But now she was kind of wanting to learn about them.

“Have you done any kind of divination before?” Phoebe looked over at Sarah with a smile as she set the book down again. One of the decks seemed to be the type where all of the pictures connected to tell a whole story, and she picked up the box to hold onto as she talked, considering buying it. “It’s really not that hard - and the cards themselves are magical. They’re just a tool that helps to channel your focus and give you a hint of things you might miss otherwise.”
She paused for a moment, then gave her own version of a sheepish grin. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to get so lecturey there. I’m Phoebe.”
*** Sarah nodded as she listened. "Nah, don't worry, it's cool," she waved her off. "I'm Sarah. And no, I haven't really done any divination yet. I'm still looking for different spells to try." Hence why she was looking at a spellbook. It was one she hadn't seen before and it looked interesting.
"But hey, maybe I'll give it a try." She made her way over and grabbed a box, checking it over. "Any advice for a complete beginner? Which set to buy and such?"

“Nice to meet you, Sarah.” Phoebe smiled and nodded her understanding. “I get that. When I first found out I was a witch, I think I bought half the New Age books at the first store I went to,” With her sisters’ money, but still - it counted.
“I think it’s easiest to start with something that’s in English and that gives you a good explanation of what the cards mean. I’d also go for something where the pictures aren’t too creepy. Some decks can get pretty graphic with the swords, in my opinion,” she said with a light laugh.
*** "Same. I always went to the store after school with my friends." Even though she wasn't friends with her former coven anymore, she had to admit, she had some pretty fun times shopping with them. If it wasn't for them, she probably would've never discovered she was a witch.
Sarah grinned. "Yeah, I can do without creepy." She was sure some people might get a kick out of it, but she'd rather just have a plain, normal deck. "But thanks. Maybe I'll try one of these ones," she picked up a couple decks that looked simple enough. She was sure she'd get the hang of it quickly.
*** “Not a problem,” Phoebe replied, nodding her approval as Sarah picked some decks. She hesitated for a moment, mostly because she didn’t want to be too invasive after just meeting this girl, but she couldn’t help her natural curiosity.
“So! Are you a witch, or are you just into New Age things?” Phoebe tried to keep it as casual as possible, hoping that she wasn’t offending Sarah by asking.
*** "I'm a witch," Sarah replied as she added the deck of tarot cards along with the spellbook she'd been looking at. "I didn't find out until about six months ago, but apparently my mom was a witch, and I was born one." Though she had an inkling that there was something different about her. But of course, 'witch' never crossed her mind at the time.
"What about you?" she asked. "I'm guessing you're a witch as well?"
*** “My sisters and I are all witches,” she said with a smile. “Magic has been passed down through the women in our family going back several generations, to the 17th century. We found out a few years ago, but when we were little we actually used our powers all the time, at least until our Grandmother bound them to protect us. I was in my 20s when we found out about all that again.”
It had been quite a revelation, though even now Phoebs could look fondly back on the memory of finding the Book in the attic and saying the spell that reactivated their power once again.
*** "Oh wow, that's quite interesting," Sarah replied. "Y'know, I never considered asking if my grandmother was a witch. Maybe magic ran in my family too. Guess I won't know now. Can't exactly ask my dad about her." She doubted he knew anyway. He didn't know much about his former wife's side of the family.
"But I really need to get home." Sonya didn't mind too much if she was late, but Sarah liked to not have her worry anyway. "It was nice meeting you. Thanks for helping me pick out my first tarot deck. Maybe we'll see each other again soon?" She did wanted to know more about this woman and her brand of magic. If not, that was fine too.

“Maybe he’ll show up sometime and you can find out what he knows. In the meantime, if you’re ever interested, I might be able to come up with a spell that can help you call on your ancestors to find out more about them,” Phoebe offered.
She smiled again and gave a firm nod. “Definitely, we should meet soon. Just reach out to me on the network, okay?” Phoebe reached out to give her hand a soft squeeze, then headed off to further explore what the store had for sale.
