Who: John Constantine and Cassie Sandsmark
When: Wednesday after school
Where: John's apartment
What: Checking in on Magic Dad
Warnings: It's Constantine
Status: Closed/In-Progress

John really hadn't done much since he'd found the First Blade, gone crazy, well crazy-er, and tried to kill Zee. People were avoiding him. He was avoiding people. He'd been beat to shit and deserved it and more so there wasn't much he could do about it other than be pissy as hell about it. Sure, they gave the blade to the magic battery drainer and he couldn't feel it right now but that didn't matter. The mark on his hand burned and itched at his skin and mind so John was drinking a hell of a lot more than he should and he hadn't shaved in days so he was working pretty hard on looking like disreputable.

That meant when someone knocked on his door all he did was yell 'come in' and didn't bother to get up. The door was open if he wanted it to be.

With the distinct lack of Magic Dad lurking on the networks, it was only natural for Cassie to worry. Where most people tended to stay away from Constantine and voice a heavy dislike of him, Cassie moved closer. The body switch had been terrifying and it was likely that she had overreacted just a bit. Thinking he was her father? Cassie hadn't minded that. It was nice considering her actual father had never been part of her life. Then again, what did you expect when he was a greek god?

Dropping a text to both Diana and Bruce that she was making a stop after school, Cassie picked up a few baked goods before heading to John's apartment. She would have had a bottle of scotch, but Cassie had thought better of raiding the liquor cabinet at home. The last thing she wanted was for Bruce to question a missing bottle.

Getting the okay to come inside, Cassie paused with a rather large frown on her face at the sight. It was certainly worse than usual as she practically waded through the sea of empty bottles. The smell of stale cigarettes didn't help either. She had kicked the door closed, gently, and dropped the bag of donuts, cookies, brownies, and chips beside him.

"You look so gross right now. Not okay! What happened?"

And that was what he got for not checking who was at the door. He should have known it would be Polly Pureheart checking up on him. Of course he changed his mind about kicking her out when he saw she brought nibbles. There hadn't been a lot of shopping going on so nibbles were a pretty welcome sight right now.

"You're telling me people haven't been talking about me?" He really hadn't been on the network so he didn't know if they had or not, he'd just sort of assumed they were. Zee was too well liked for people to overlook it. "An stop calling me gross Sunshine."

Food was always the way to someone's heart. Or at least a way to get them to talk or not be so grumpy. He would have been welcomed to kick her out, but Cassie would have made that difficult for him.

"They might be, but I don't, like, sit and read the network all day," she said with a roll of her eyes. Kicking a bottle out of the way and pushing a few more here and there, Cassie took a seat beside him.

"You're only gross when you're gross which you are right now. So, what's wrong? What did you do?"

"Sometimes bills come due. An mine did. That's all." He fished in the bag to pull out a cookie and took a bite. John hadn't realized he was hungry. When he got like this food was the last thing he tended to take care of.

"Suppose I could use a shower." He sighed and absently rubbed the mark on the palm of his hand with his other hand. It tingled and itched pretty constantly now.

Cassie was apt to agree except she had taken note of the marking on his hand. That was new. Having been in John's body not too long ago, she did not remember seeing that or feeling anything that was obviously bothering him.

"What's that?" she asked, leaning over a bit to try and get a better look at it. "Did you burn yourself? Is it infected? Why didn't you wrap it up?" Of course, Cassie would ask a slew of questions with genuine concern. "Should I get something for it? A band-aid?"

It hadn't been there because he owed the favor so when he'd ended up in Cassie's body it had gone with him. And it was usually something he kept hidden but it was stronger now after the contact with the Blade.

"It's not a burn, the hell is wrong with you?" He used the hand without the mark to push her back upright instead of leaning over to look at things. "You can't fix it with a band aid." At this rate he was going to have to give her an education in mystical shit just to keep him from having to listen to her say things like that.

"It's something I did to fix things once. Now it's going to be someone else's turn to fix things soon."

"Well, I don't know what it is, so nothing is wrong with me." Cassie frowned at him. Especially when he pushed her away. She had half a mind to try and get another look at it but refrained from doing so.

Especially with his comment.

"You fixed something, so now you have a mark?" Cassie asked and then sat up as though she had had a revelation. "Oh, so it's kind of like your reminder, right?" Another pause. "If it's someone else's turn, why do you still have it? Should that person have it?"

"What?" Cassie was making him really need another drink at this point. He was going to have to give her mystic lessons in self defense if she kept this up.

"No. I got the mark to fix something else. Now someone is going to have to do something to keep it from sending me round the bend again soon an trying to kill people."

"I'll do it." There was no hesitation in her words. Not even the slightest. "I'll do whatever the something is." It would keep people safe and it would keep John safe. There was no reason why Cassie wouldn't offer. It was what she did and who she was.

"What do I have to do? Like, do I wait for some kind of sign? Does it just happen?"

John finally just tossed the cookie aside and picked up his bottle for a drink. "You're fucking mental Sunshine. Would you stop writing blank checks to the universe without knowing what you're doing?"

She had no idea what the mark was capable of and what the solution usually was. He ended up growling under his breath and running a hand over his face and scruffy start of a beard. "You don't do anything. That's what you do."

"Hey!" Cassie frowned and, albeit easily, wrestled the bottle away from him. "You want a drink? I'll get you some water." That would mean braving whatever the kitchen would look like. It would also mean seeing if there were any clean glasses and dishes to use.

She could be brave. That was who Cassie was after all. Disappearing for a few minutes, Cassie returned with a glass of room temperature water. The look on her face made it clear that she didn't want to talk about those few minutes spent in John's kitchen.

"And, too bad. I'm going to help. That's what I do. Don't patronize me like everyone else does!"

"Oy!" He didn't want water, he wanted his damn bottle back.

She had to be brave to face his kitchen without coming right back out. He was an indifferent house cleaner at the best of times and this wasn't the best of times.

He took the water and put it aside on the table because he had zero interest in drinking water.

"Fine. You want the non patronizing version? I took the mark to kill someone because no one else would do it. And I did, killed him without a second though even though he's a friend. Problem is now I have to deal with my end of it and I did my damndest to kill someone else that's a fried. Might be the only way to deal with it is to kill me too. So how is it you plan to help?"

The idea of killing anyone or anything wasn't really at the top of Cassie's things she enjoyed. She had never taken a life, but she had watched it happen. Death wasn't a new concept to Cassie, but it was a favorite either. She imagined it wasn't really for anyone.

"You killed him because you had to, right?" Cassie's normal cheerful tone was somber and she was surprisingly quiet when she asked her question. She wanted to believe that John, and anyone, would only take a life because they had to. Sometimes it was the only choice someone had. That didn't make it any easier of course.

"Yes, Cassie. Because it had to be done an no one else could be trusted to do it. Sometimes it has to happen. An that's part of my job too, making the hard decisions to keep the universe from imploding. Like I told Diana there's a reason I don't have a lot of friends left." She could take it however she wanted it but he didn't have a lot of friends left because they usually ended up as some sort of sacrifice for what he needed to do.

"Doesn't mean I haven't done horrible things that didn't need to be done exactly."

It was sad, really, and Cassie could practically feel the sympathy she felt for John weighing on her shoulders. Seeing people she cared about wrestling with such things and not being able to help? Cassie hated that.

Reaching over, Cassie took the marked hand in her own. Leaning in, she just rested her head on John's shoulder. After a moment, she handed him the bottle she had taken from him.

"I'm your friend, okay? Even if you don't like me, I'm here to help and you're just going to have to deal with that."

"You still feel that way if I told you I cut off an angel's wings with a chainsaw because he was a prat?" Well and he'd fucked over Ellie and John and been more than happy to help her put the snob in his place. Of course he'd screwed over Ellie himself later on but she was a succubus and that was kind of their relationship with each other. Stab each other in the back but sort of be friends.

He took the bottle and took another drink before nudging Cassie back off of him. "I smell Sunshine and I'm betting your super parents don't know you're here."

A chainsaw? That was probably overkill, but Cassie didn't comment on that. You did what you had to do. That was part of the superhero job, too. Even when you fought as a kid, you had to take care of and see things that no kid should ever see.

"They know I'm out," she said with a shrug. Cassie was still feeling a little frustrated with how everyone had treated her during the fight against the Bargast. "They keep forgetting that I can totally take care of myself. You should have heard them when we went after that monster thing. They were like 'Cassie, pay attention! Cassie, don't do anything until we tell you!' And I know how missions work!"

She let out a huff and nudged an empty bottle with her foot. It wasn't done at full strength, so it just slid across the floor a bit more than someone with normal strength. "But, yeah. I should probably get going anyway. Don't eat all of this in one sitting, okay?" she instructed, holding up the bag of goodies.

"Oh please the Bat is a fucking control freak Sunshine. You'll never get him to not be bossy at every opportunity so you might as well get used to it." He snorted for the idea of Batman going easy on someone or allowing that they might know what they were doing. He'd even try to boss around the mystics when he had no idea what he was doing in a situation, it was just who he was.

"No promises. Go on, do your homework and all that wholesome stuff." He'd need to try to start planning what to do next. He didn't trust Cassie to keep her nose out of it and he wanted to keep her out of it if he could. To do that he needed her to get the hell out.
