Who: Anakin Skywalker and Sam Goode. What: Sam and Anakin talk engineering and mechanical things. Where: The car shop where Anakin works. When: Wednesday, April 18. Warnings: None. Status: Closed | Completed GDOC.
Sam was at the car clinic getting his car worked on, and he was watching the people work on it, even as he sat and fiddled with a component he was working on for his new job. He was trying to learn new skills and new tech to bring to the table, so to speak, and he was hoping he could really do well at this job.
It seemed like not a very busy day at the car clinic, which meant he might get out of here within an hour, if he was lucky. He nodded to one of the workers on a break, Anakin, he was sure, from the network.
“Hi! How goes it?”
***
It wasn’t a very busy day at the car clinic, and Anakin had decided it was time for a break. There wasn’t really much for him to do at the moment, all the cars that had been taken in for repairs or what not were already being worked on. So he had a moment or two to step away from the repairs and collect himself. Not that he really needed much collecting.
He looked up when he heard someone speaking to him, and offered the man a small smile. He had been learning to smile more, since his arrival in Madison Valley, though his most genuine of smiles were often reserved for Padme.
“Hey,” he said. “Car problems?”
***
“Yeah. A few.” He smiled back. “Its being seen to. Just the usual mess.” He grinned as he turned to face the man, hands still working on the components. Energy storage, almost like a crystal, glittered between his hands as his fingers felt for a flaw he knew was there but had not yet found.
“Just trying to get it done while nothing big is going on.”
***
He nodded in response to Sam’s words. “It seems like a good time to get car work done. It’s slow today, you came by at a good time. And the dome appears to not have any plans for us at the moment.” The week of nightmares had been horrible for Anakin, as he suspected it had been for most of the town’s residents and refugees.
Anakin nodded toward the components Sam appeared to be working with, “What are you doing?” He was curious, he hadn’t really seen anything like it before. Not really.
***
“Thank God for that. I was so tired by the end of that that i was falling asleep while waking up.” he chuckled, but it had an element of truth to it. What a mess that had been.
Sam looked down at the pieces and smiled “A device to control, enhance, and contain kinetic or force energy. I retrofitted it off of tech that some people had in a weapon and i am just trying to see if I can make it work outside of that. Like… give it more uses, you know?”
***
Anakin had been exhausted at the end of the week of nightmares. He’d refused to sleep anymore than what was absolutely necessary. He’d been on the verge of madness, really. He had been able to see himself turning to the Dark Side, he had been able to see how it had been possible.
He looked at the pieces that were in front of Sam, nodding at his explanation of what he was working on. “Are you having any luck with it?” He was interested in things like this, and hoped that Sam would be willing to speak with him about it.
***
Sam smiled at the other man. “I can make it work, but only inside the device it came out of. Outside, it is still not wanting to work right.” It was small, and mostly cylindrical, as it came from the aiming area of a gun, but he knew he could get it to work if he figured it out.
“Might take a bit more work. I’m still fairly new to engineering.”
He lifted it so the other man could see it.
***
Anakin studied the piece Sam had been working on, his head tilting slightly. He appreciated anything mechanical in nature, he felt it soothing to work on something mechanical. Which was one of the reasons he decided to work at the car repair shop. It was something he knew how to do, he found he could usually fix whatever was wrong with an item.
"I am certain you will be able to figure it out," he offered. It seemed as though Sam knew what he was doing, for the most part. "And if you find something isn't working as it should, I would be glad to take a look. Cars aren't the only thing I know."
***
Sam loved engineering and mechanical stuff. He had never known it would be something he liked, not until he started doing it, and now it absorbed a lot of his day, even outside of work.
“Thanks! I mean, if you want to look at it, that would be cool. I’m sure I would figure this out eventually, but I am at an impasse at the moment.”
***
Anakin nodded, and stepped closer to Sam and the device he appeared to be working on. He loved anything mechanical or engineering related, and was glad for a chance to take a look at this. He liked anything new as well, anything that he may be able to figure out.
It was almost a puzzle of sorts, figuring out what went where and how to best make a thing work to its full potential.
“Sometimes it just takes a new pair of eyes in order to figure something out.”
***
“Exactly.” Sam shifted it so Anakin could see it, and reach it, if he wanted. “Take a look all you want. It’s a fun puzzle, even if I get frustrated sometimes, translating alien technology to Earth capabilities.”
Fun, and frustrating, and ever so often dangerous.
***
“I get frustrated with things at times, too. It’s difficult, when I’m so used to the technology from my home, not to have the same technology here. But I am trying. It’s hard, but I make do.” He reached for the item that Sam was working on, and studied it. He turned it over in his hands as he did so, feeling the weight of it.
“Maybe…” he started, then shook his head. No, that wouldn’t be right. Or would it? “I think I might have a part here in the shop that might work with this.”
***
Sam listened to him, and nodded. “The tech is more advanced there?” he was curious about such things. He had not yet really recognized Anakin’s name as significant in any way other than as someone on the network.
“Really? Cool!”
Sam smiled. “Maybe we can grab is when you are free and try it out? If you want, I mean.” he grinned.
***
He nodded once more at Sam’s words, “Yes, it is. We had different weapons, different modes of transportation. Different planets that we could travel to. It was different than here, in more ways than the fact than we cannot leave this place.” He hated the fact that they were stuck in Madison Valley. He liked the town, sure, but he wasn’t accustomed to being stuck in one place and not being able to leave.
“Of course,” he said. “I get off in a couple of hours, I can grab it then and we can test it out. I’d be glad to do so.” He offered Sam a small smile, and offered the man the device back. He was glad to be able to try and help Sam, he wanted to be able to do so.
***
“Interesting. I would love to learn more about your world and tech.” sam loved technology and engineering. He loved every aspect of it.
“Absolutely! That rocks! Thank you!” Sam smiled at the other man, rising to shake his hand.
