Even with all the weird things that happened in town, Stilinski loved his life there. His son was happy -- even if his particular situation was a little on the unusual side, Stiles was happy and that was the only thing that mattered there. He’d married an amazing, beautiful, intelligent woman who had been willing to take a risk right along with him. He had a good job that allowed him to help people. It wasn’t what he did back home, but it was at least something.
All in all, life was good.
He was heading down the street, intending to go grab a coffee before heading home -- he hadn’t actually been working but he’d gone in to finish some notes on a couple files -- when he caught sight of a familiar face. Well, older but still familiar. He counted her as familiar, anyway.
“Leia!” he called, lifting a hand slightly to help catch her attention.
***
Leia tried to walk around town a little every day, she still had to use her stick but she was getting stronger everyday. She couldn’t deny that being away from running the resistance was more relaxation than she’d had in a while and it was welcomed.
Turning at the sound of her name she smiled and waved back, “Stilinski, is that right?” she checked, she recognised him from the conversation they’d had on the net. She’d felt terrible knowing that some version of her had been here before and made friends but she couldn’t remember it.
***
“It is,” he replied with a nod as he approached her. “It’s good to see you again. More in person, I mean.” Because he’d seen her on the network a few times, and he’d of course seen her around town, but he’d yet to speak with her aside from that first time.
“How’ve you been? How’re you settling in?” He knew she’d been back for a while, but that didn’t mean anything to someone in her situation, he also knew.
***
“You too. I am sorry I don’t remember you” she said, because she was, “But I hope we can become friends once again” she added with a smile. Friends were always welcome and she trusted her own judgement, even if she didn’t remember it.
“I’ve been well thank you. I’m slowly getting used to things here, though I still haven’t found a job that feels right” she admitted.
***
“Your old job’s always open,” Stilinski offered. “We can always use another good person there.” And she’d been good at it the first time, but he wasn’t sure if that was the sort of thing he should tell her right off the bat.
“You want to go grab a cup of coffee, at least talk through some options?” he offered. “I’m a pretty good sounding board.”
***
“Thank you” Leia said with a smile, it was nice to know she’d done enough of a good job that he would ask her to return even if she wasn’t the exact person he’d known before.
“Are you sure? That would be very kind but I don’t want to delay you if you’re busy” she said, though it would be nice to talk through things with someone. And Stilinski seemed like a nice friend to have.
***
“I’m not busy at all,” he assured her. “I was actually just going to get a cup of coffee before heading home, so I’ve got more than enough time.”
He’d just text Maggie or one of the others if he ended up needing to. They’d all understand if he was late, especially in favor of this sort of conversation with Leia.
“Do you have any other possibilities at the moment?” he asked as they started walking.
***
“Thank you then, I would appreciate your council” she said with a smile and a nod. Joining him for coffee and a chance to discuss what she could do would be most welcome.
“Honestly, no” she admitted, “I want to feel useful, to make a difference. But I know so little about this world I’ve struggled to think of what I could do”
***
“I get that, in a way,” he admitted. “The job I had back home is something that the residents here won’t allow the refugees to do, so I was a little at a loss for a while. And then I stopped to think, what’s my skillset? What did I do in this job that I want to continue doing in some form?”
He shrugged. “And that’s the short story of how a police officer back home wound up working with at risk kids here. The long story involved lots of trying to think and more than a little driving myself crazy.”
***
“Trying to think and driving myself crazy sounds like the path I’ve been heading down” Leia smiled, “But you’re right, focusing on the skillset is the way to go. There may not be any room here for refugee police officers or rebel leaders but that doesn’t mean we have nothing to offer” Leia considered herself a good person and if that could assist people then it was all she asked.
***
“Exactly,” he said with a nod. “Which means that the next step is also being aware of what you’re not good at. Focus on the other part, true, but keep everything in mind.”
He gave her a smile. “So, for example, me? I wanted to help people. I was a protector. Since I couldn’t do that? I stopped to think, what people in town could I help and protect?”
A shrug. “Some of us got lucky, we were able to find jobs that let us utilize skills we employed back home -- Chris Argent, the manager over at Neils Creek, the gun store? Was a licensed weapons dealer. One of the social services employees, Paige Matthews, she was a social worker back home. People over at Fight Science Gym, they’re all highly skilled. And some people have ended up just doing something that works with their passions -- my son’s girlfriend works at the music store.”
***
Helping and protecting people was definitely Leia’s thing too, the leadership aspect wasn’t as important to her. That had simply happened, it wasn’t something she’d ever pursued. But helping those who couldn’t help themselves, that was definitely something she had always tried to do.
Leia nodded as she listened, “It certainly seems a lot of people have found their place, be it similar or not. Since I was a girl my passion has been helping others, we’re alike in that I think” she added with a smile, “I fell into leadership but it was never something I really coveted” she admitted.
***
“And there are definitely a few places here where you can put that desire to help into place,” he said. “We’d be glad to have you, though.”
They reached the coffee shop -- not Starbucks, one of the other places in town. He liked those sometimes, they had a different atmosphere. “Let me buy your coffee,” he said as they got in line. “Call it just being my turn. Only fair.”
***
“I will definitely think on it” Leia promised, it seemed a good option and she must have been good at it previously for him to be offering her the position once again. And she couldn’t deny the fact that it would be good to be working with someone she now considered a friend.
“Thank you” she nodded, “Next time it will be my turn” she smiled, “Only fair”
