Despite the fact that religion had rather successfully made the transition from Earth to space, Holden did not consider himself a very religious man. He had morals and ideals, sure. Strong ones, that he lived his life by. But to him, space was just too vast and too sublime to put some anthropomorphic deity at its head. He had the feeling that if there was a creator, it was far more complicated than that. That, and he'd just never really found a place for organized religion in his life. And he didn't feel like he was missing anything by not having it.
So Sunday morning, instead of following the peal of the church bells, Holden went to Starbucks, got a cup of coffee, and went down to the river just to watch the river flow by. It was such a banal thing, such a normal thing, but it was also something he hadn't done in many years. Sure, when he was a kid in Montana he'd spent a lot of time outside, enjoying the green spaces. But that had been years ago, and much had happened since then.
He'd been here for over two weeks now, and there was no sign of going home. Of course, from what he could tell, you never got a sign. You just disappeared. He didn't like that, but there was nothing he could do about it for now.
Taking a sip of his coffee he sighed and leaned back on the bench. This was earth as he had never known it, and he figured he should enjoy it while he could.
