Who: Stiles, Kate, Nick, Clay, Elena, Mercy, Liam
What: An Attack
Where: Outside the pack house
When: Friday Evening
Warning: Violence, werewolves getting tossed around, very wounded Stiles
Status: Complete Gdoc, possible aftermath continuing in comments
It was still cold in Madison Valley but it was warm enough during the day that Stiles tended to forget that it was going to turn cold enough at night to need a real jacket. It was like a tease to be warm in his jeans, t-shirt and a light hoodie during the day only to go outside at night and get the cold like a slap in the face.
Of course once he was at the little house with Nick and Kate it was always warm enough so he could put up with the colder trip out to go see them. The Jeep might be a little warmer if he worked with Mercy to get the heater working again so he made a mental note to do that.
It was amazing after getting a few nights of real sleep, and possibly about twenty four hours of sleep right after Easter, he felt a lot better. A lot of the crazy and being pissed off all the time was gone and Stiles was really thankful for that. So tonight to kind of say thank you for taking care of him while he was a complete manic basket case who actually broke down and cried once because he was so god damn desperate for sleep Stiles was bringing dinner. It’s just there was more than he could carry in the Jeep so he called Kate’s cell when he hit the driveway.
“Hey want to come out and help me carry dinner in for us?”
***
“Sure, be right out,” Kate said when she answered her phone and heard Stiles’ request. As far as she was concerned, he didn’t owe them anything. He was their boyfriend, they loved him, and they would always give him whatever support he needed.
Not that they were ever going to turn down food. She shoved her feet into a pair of sneakers, not bothering to put on socks since she was only going to be outside for a couple of minutes, and headed out to meet him at the Jeep.
Everyone was much happier now that they were able to sleep and she was hoping the dome would give them a break for a while. The past couple of months had seemed like non-stop chaos. “Mm, smells good,” she said as she approached the car.
***
At least he didn’t tell them that he was giving them food because he felt like he owed them. It was just something he showed up with. He was just in such a good mood for having slept that he was happy to do anything for any of his friends right now.
“Best that game store salary can buy.” He grinned as he started pulling out some bags for her to carry back to the house and putting them on top of the hood of the Jeep. When he turned around to look at her the grin turned slightly confused as his eyes and brain tried to put together something that was like one of those puzzles where you had to pick out an image out of a jumble. There was a soft shine from two spots low to the ground off in the greenery and for some reason it just wasn’t clicking on what he was looking at.
Just then the wind shifted in one of those unpredictable movements it did when a storm might be coming later and brought the scent to Kate. Dog, predator, magic, all mixed together into something very bad.
***
Kate recognized the puzzled look on his face and was just about to ask him what was wrong when the wind shifted and she caught the scent of… something. It wasn’t a scent she recognized, but it made the hair on the back of her neck stand up and she immediately fell into a defensive stance.
“Get in the house,” she said. “There’s something out here.”
Whatever it was, she was sensing danger and she wanted her very human and fragile boyfriend out of the way. She trusted that he’d send up the alarm and get the rest of the Pack out to help if necessary.
***
Once it clicked what he was looking for it clicked hard and the shape of something freaking huge and canine that was dark against the vegetation was suddenly all too easy to see. The shine had been a reflection of the lights from the porches catching its eyes.
Stiles wasn’t going to argue, he didn’t even have his baseball bat in the Jeep so he just dropped the food he had in his hands and started to take a step toward the house when the thing rushed them.
“NICK!” He was sending up the alarm just not over the phone since he hadn’t had time to go inside. Hell he hadn’t even had time to think too seriously about going to the house. All Stiles knew was that the thing that looked like a dog that got mixed with something from another world came at them completely silently and was headed straight at Kate.
Instinct had him move before he thought about it and Stiles shoved Kate to the side so she was missed by the huge dog thing. Unfortunately it meant it smashed into him and took him to the ground. The only good thing was he’d been moving and was taller than Kate was so it ended up with its teeth locked in his shoulder and collarbone at the crook where it met his neck instead of ripping his throat out.
***
Whatever the huge creature was that was charging at them was, Kate knew for certain it wasn’t a werewolf. Or at least not any of the ones she’d met so far. Times like these, she hated that her Change took so long, because she was going to have fight in human form which put her at a serious disadvantage. She focused on her hand, trying to at least manage a partial shift to give her claws, but before she had a chance to attack, she was on the ground.
“STILES!” she screamed when the thing attacked him. She jumped to her feet and grabbed the fur at the back of the creature’s neck, yanking it away from Stiles. What the hell had he been thinking in pushing her out of the way?
***
Nick had stayed inside when Stiles arrived, hunched over his laptop, scrolling mindlessly through fonts until words didn’t look like words. He didn’t think anything of them taking a few extra moments before coming inside, figured they’d just gotten distracted and was going to take advantage of the moment to maybe get something finished before they wound up distracting him for good.
It wasn’t until he heard Stiles shouting for him that he really clued in to something being wrong. He didn’t hesitate, didn’t stop to think it over, just raced for the door, laptop crashing to the floor behind him. What greeted him was just about the last thing he wanted to see. Kate pulling some huge dog-like creature off of Stiles. And Stiles, torn open and bleeding. There was a half second when he didn’t know who to help first but in the end he knew that Kate was strong enough to take care of herself, and Stiles was clearly injured.
“Shit!” he cursed, scrambling to Stiles’ side, trying to look at the injuries in the dark and knowing perfectly well that he had no idea what he was looking for. This was Jeremy’s thing. “What the hell is that thing?” Directed more to Kate, though he didn’t really expect an answer from either of them.
***
“Big...really fucking big…” That had hurt so much Stiles couldn’t think very straight but the terror fueled adrenaline was good for helping with that. His hoody was really wet, he could feel blood going down his chest and soaking his sleeve already but when that big ass dog thing casually ignored the fact that Kate had yanked it off of him and sniffed in Nick’s direction and let out a snarl that pretty much froze his back bone before turning that same look on Kate Stiles feebly pushed at Nick with the hand not being used to try to keep his blood inside.
“Go help her.” It wanted them, it was basically ignoring Stiles now and he wasn’t sure why but it had started a stiff legged stalk after Kate and snarled again.
The one down wasn’t a werewolf. It was not a threat. The two still up were werewolves. The Bargest knew what it had to do. Turning to the one that had pulled it off the non threat it started toward the female werewolf and prepared to strike.
***
Kate had no idea what the hell the thing was, but it was big and strong and she was definitely not going to be able to take it down herself. “DAD HELP!” she yelled, knowing that her father was in the house and would hear her screaming if he wasn’t already on his way out from the commotion.
“Get him to Jeremy,” she screamed in Nick’s direction as she dodged the creature’s strike, barely, and bared her teeth at it. The scent of Stiles’ blood was heavy in the air and Kate was far more concerned about him bleeding out than she was about Nick helping her fight this thing. “You picked the wrong house to attack,” she said, going on the offensive again and aiming for the beast’s throat with her claws.
***
It was a momentary struggle for Nick. Half of him wanted to do exactly as Stiles said, to jump in and help Kate, to protect her even if she didn’t need protecting. The rest wanted to do exactly as Kate said, get Stiles inside and away from whatever this thing was. Very quickly he settled on the latter. He could already hear footsteps and voices from inside the main house.
“Help her, he says,” he tried to keep things light, but the strain and fear in his vice made it hard. He just carefully scooped Stiles up into his arms, tried to be careful of the wound but probably jarred it far more than intended. “Kate’s fine; there’s help on the way. We’ve got to get you to Jeremy.”
With any luck the Alpha would already be waiting with a med kit.
***
Stiles didn’t care about the hurt, right now it actually helped him focus because things were starting to feel kind of fuzzy and he was getting really tired. He still yelped when it got jolted but since it worked like a slap across the face to keep him awake he was kind of glad for it.
He was still holding his shoulder with one hand and trying to look over Nick’s shoulder to see if Kate was okay as Nick carried him away from the fight and his light gray hoodie had a dark stain all down one arm and his chest.
Kate’s claws skated across the pebbled skin of the thing’s throat without doing any damage and it snapped at her legs trying to get her off her feet to make her easier prey without seeming to notice that she’d been attacking it.
***
Clayton heard Stiles call for Nick. He didn’t think anything of it, didn’t acknowledge it except for a roll of his eyes. Damned werewolf hearing, sometimes he heard way too much. But the silence that followed made the hair on the back of Clay’s neck stand on end, and he didn’t know why.
He heard what appeared to be a commotion outside, and felt like it wasn’t the sort of thing that should be ignored. He stood, sauntered to the window to look out toward the little house where Nick and Kate lived, just as Kate yelled for him. Whatever that massive creature out there was, it wasn’t friendly, and Clay charged toward the door.
“We got trouble!” he hollered over his shoulder, and the surge of adrenaline that had him moving toward the door very nearly pulled the door off its hinges when he yanked it open. Just as he tumbled out to the porch, Nick was heading right for him with Stiles looking like a sack of potatoes bleeding in his arms. Clay shoved the door open and dodged Nick and Stiles, practically leaping over the steps to the ground.
He landed in a crouch and shot up and forward to launch an assault on the nightmarish creature just as the beast knocked Kate to the ground. Clay attacked with a battle-cry growl, jumping onto the creature’s back. Within seconds, he was flung to the ground like a rag doll.
Inside the house, Scott had realised something was happening and headed down stairs to find out what the hell was going on. Encountering Avery in the hallway, he told the human to stay in his room until they knew what was going on.

It was pure luck that Elena was actually at the Pack house that night since she tended to try and spend as many nights with Derek as she could. The nightmares had the effect of keeping her stationed close to home though and with what suddenly was happening, it was a good thing for the Pack. Being the tracker in the Pack, she picked up the scent from her bedroom in the Pack house and rushed to the window, looking out with confusion and fear in her eyes. It took a lot for Clay to shout like that and she was just in time to see her former boyfriend and fiance tossed to the ground like a rag doll.
It was obvious from the sight that what they were dealing with was far from human...if it had ever been human at all. What little clothes she had on, Elena quickly tore off and despite her recent, painful nightmares about transitioning, she plowed into it full force. The danger around her seemed to accelerate the change and all too soon she was on all fours, a large, white wolf with startling blue eyes. She stumbled, rather awkwardly, down the stairs and thankfully didn’t have to attempt to wrangle with the door or break a window to get out. Nails scratching and chipping on the wood, Elena lept in front of the fallen Clay. The smell coming off that thing was unfamiliar to Elena, but being in full wolf mode, she didn’t have much time to comprehend it. Instead, she growled, the sound a low, deep rumble within her chest, and shot into the air, landing on the thing and managing to sink her teeth and claws in briefly before she too was flung away, landing not far from clay in a heap.

The moment someone yelled trouble Mercy was bolting out after Clay. She had the distinct advantage of changing in all of a half second and she hit the ground running on all fours, a trail of clothing left behind as she’d wiggled free. She didn’t take long to get to the trouble, she was small compared to the wolves but she was fast. Mercy was reckless - she was Coyote’s daughter after all and that meant throwing a battle into chaos.
Seeing Elena and Clay both get batted away meant she took a half second to think, then decided against thinking and charged in, diving for legs, nipping and running. She didn’t fight like most wolves, she didn’t have the strength for that kind of thing. Instead she was determined to be a distraction for them.
Mercy was fueled by the fact Clay was down, that her friends and family were in danger, and that meant she thought even less on her feet than usual. She took risks she probably shouldn’t have taken, getting too close, sticking around for one more nip. She wanted to buy them time to get up and help since she was mostly a mosquito compared to them and while she was a capable of taking down things bigger than her, it was always easier to just be a distraction.d
She took a glance back and next thing she knew she was head over tail skidding across the ground to land in a heap not far from them, stars swimming before her. She hadn’t even seen it coming. Damn.
Jaime meanwhile was doing what she did best in these moments: hording the humans and holing up where it was out of the way, she was useless for this except to corral peoples. She knew her place, after all.

Liam had caught a strange smell just before all hell broke loose. He couldn’t place it, but it wasn’t good. He could tell that much. He wasn’t sure what was going on exactly, but soon found himself wrapped up in the excitement, the wolf in him straining to take control. Were they actually going to get to fight something? This could be fun. It had been a long time.
But when he got outside, and saw Clay was down, something in his stomach clenched. That wasn’t right. Clay was strong.
He took a step back, lost and confused, fear leaking in as he watched and listened and smelled, practically frozen in place by all of the activity.
***
Whatever the hell this creature was, it was strong and Kate was actually afraid they weren’t going to be able to take it down. It seemed to bat away all of them with ease, despite being attacked by three strong werewolves and a coyote. This was very much Not Good, especially since there was no time for her and her parents to Change.
She noticed Liam standing there, seemingly frozen by fear, and yelled over. “Get out a call for backup!” It may or may not do any good depending on how quickly people could there, but it was pretty obvious they were going to need help. Even if this thing took all of them down, there were more people in town who needed protection and hopefully some of the super powered folks would be able to lend a hand in that regard.
Struggling back to her feet, she went on the offensive again, throwing herself on the beast’s back and yanking the fur hard with both fists. Hair pulling was such a teenage girl fight move, but Kate was willing to try anything that might slow the thing down even a little.
***
It took Clay a few seconds to haul himself up from the ground. He’d been thrown pretty hard, and he knew he was going to be sore tomorrow. That was assuming he survived the fight at all, and given the way the creature was throwing everyone around he wasn’t sure he, or any of them, were going to survive. And that was just unacceptable.
He got to his feet just as Kate jumped at the beast’s back. That was his daughter, and he wasn’t going to stand around and let the thing take her out. Not if he could help it. He didn’t know what he’d do, but he sure as hell had to try something. A quick glance at Mercy and he was on the move, plowing head first into the creature, more than willing to sacrifice himself to give Kate and Mercy and everyone else a fighting chance.
The thing plucked him off his feet and sent him flying once more, with what seemed like very little effort. Clay slammed into a tree and hit the ground in a motionless heap.
***
Elena pushed herself up just in time to see Mercy nipping at the creature’s ankles before dodging away. It was a smart move; Mercy knew she wasn’t as big as Elena and while she could take down bigger things, she was trying to buy them time to get back on their feet. As it was, she noticed Clay already struggling to stand and Kate was back in the thick of it. Her daughter was on the beast’s back, pulling and yanking at the thick fur.
A surge of fear mixed with a sense of anger rose within her as well as the typical, obvious loyalty of a pack wolf and she sprung into action. Leaping into the air, she took one final chance at the beast’s leg, jaws landing around the thick limb and teeth automatically sinking in. Alarmingly, the beast barely faltered at all and Elena found herself shook back and forth much like a rag doll herself until one final, violent shake sent her into one of the supports on the porch and plunging her vision into darkness.
~~~
Mercy watched Kate jump on the thing’s back and it gave her time to drag herself back up too, then she watched in horror as Clay went sailing past and into the tree then stopped moving. It all happened so fast because seconds later Elena was sailing the other direction after being shaken around. The tawny coyote lost her cool - all of them were family. Pack. And while she might not be wolf she wouldn’t turn tail. Instead she threw her head back and howled, then flung herself back into it.
It didn’t seem to care much about her, not as much as it was gunning for the wolves. Somewhere it settled into the back of her brain for later. But she tried to sink her teeth into the back of its leg, trying to hamstring it. It sent her tumbling with a mule kick, it was annoyed with her. It was one of the few times she hated being only a 45 odd pound coyote versus a werewolf, she just didn’t have the raw power to brute strength something into submission. She had to fight smarter.
She landed, dazed, before Clay, everything hurt. The ground was never a soft landing when being thrown, but she was markedly better off than the rest of them - still awake and wide eyed. She took stock of everything that hurt, bruises were going to be part of her wardrobe at the very least. Then her eyes glinted as she felt something settle in the back of her mind. A twang as a bond she never thought would happen here settled into place. The moment, the fight, the fact she’d die first before she let it take down Clay was enough to settle a mate bond into place. She’d have to figure out what that meant, here, later.
For now, she stood her ground before Clay, paws at all four corners, claws out and dug into the ground for grip, shoulders set. If that thing wanted to take out Clay he would have to go through her first. A growl low in her throat as she squared off and waited, knowing she was no real match for it. She was ready to dart to save Kate if necessary, or dive in front of Elena if that was needed, too, because they were pack and she was still standing and they were not currently upright. She had explosive speed on her side she just hoped she wouldn’t need it.
***
Backup - Liam could do that! He let out a howl to call any other werewolves in the area, then ran into the packhouse, grabbing the phone and calling anyone he could think of, as well as posting a message to the network.
At least it was something - at least he could feel useful while everyone else was getting slaughtered outside. He felt the bloodlust in him, though, and ran outside, roaring as he looked around, trying to find a place to jump in.
“Kate!” He shouted. “What can I do??”
He was a little unsure and he definitely didn’t want to make things worse.
***
There was an unseen presence watching all of this from far enough away that the werewolves wouldn’t detect them. They saw all this through a set of night binoculars and when the howl carried to their ears they considered. There could be a lot of back up coming...or none. They should know more about the population of this strange place before they continued.
A slim whistle was put to their lips but when they blew nothing seemed to come out.
Unless you had really good hearing. If you did there was the blast of a shrill whistle that cut through the night. Once the beast heard it whatever and whoever it was attacking was ignored and with a shake of its patchy fur it turned and ran off into the night leaving chaos and the smell of blood behind.
***
Kate hung on as best she could while her parents attacked the creature, but ended up getting flung off at some point and hit the ground hard. She was trying to pull herself back to her feet when she heard a sharp whistle and winced at the noise. Whatever it was, it caused the beast to run off, leaving behind a lot of dazed and confused werecreatures.
A quick glance around the yard and she realized that her mom and dad both seemed to be unconscious. “Check on my mom,” she said to Liam as she pulled herself up and walked over to Mercy and her dad. “Can you check the perimeter and make sure that thing is really gone?” she asked Mercy as she bent down to see if Clay was still breathing.
He was, thankfully, and she leaned over to scoop him up and get him inside. Jeremy probably had his hands full with Stiles at the moment, but he’d want to look over all of them.
***
Mercy took a minute to look around before she nodded at Kate, knowing that Kate would in fact take good care of Clay. She yipped a yip of agreement before she took off, limping a bit, but not letting it stop her in the least. She’d run the perimeter twice before she’d circle back around, and then because paranoia dictated she check again, Bran loud in her head, she ran around once more.
She made her way back to the House before Changing back into her regular two footed form. Everything hurt, body bruised and battered and sore, but that was fine. She grabbed a shirt she’d thrown on the floor, and put it back on. “Whatever it is is gone” she called up, projecting her voice, “I’m getting food for us going, and keeping my ears open just in case!” She paused to listen to the house before she turned to the kitchen and pulled as much meat as they had out of the freezers and started cooking. “Someone please keep me posted on Clay and Elena and everyone please?” she called up because she knew someone would hear her, with the pleading tone in her voice.
As much as she wanted to run up and be near Clay, she knew they were all going to need protein and lots of it. Which meant someone had to cook it up for them and she could do that while they were all tended to.
***
Avery and Jaime had Cadence and Rocco holed up in his room upstairs. Even though it was quiet now, he wasn’t going to budge with the kids until someone came and told him it was safe. Scott was with Stiles, and Clay was taken into the house like a limp rag in his daughter’s arms.
He had been out cold on the ground, but stirred when Kate picked him up. HIs head was fuzzy, he wasn’t entirely sure what had happened, and keeping his eyes open was too much of an effort. He sagged in Kate’s arms like he had no muscle tone at all, and moaned softly when she put him down.
His gaze flickered, and he managed a weak smile for Kate. “I’m okay,” he told her. “I will be. Go...check on Stiles,” he murmured, eyes closing. “I’m just going to sleep for a little while,” he said softly, and let the blackness of sleep wash over him.
***
Liam ran over to where Elena was laying limp on the ground. He could hear her heart beating with his werewolf heraing, and breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t know her well, but she looked exactly like Kitty, and he didn’t want her to die for that reason alone. That, and she was Kate’s mom.
He shook her, gently, hoping she wasn’t in a coma or anything, then looked over towards Kate and shouted:
“She’s alive! She’s hurt, but she’s alive. Do you want me to carry her inside?”
He wasn’t sure if she should or not, but it seemed wrong to leave her out here.
***
The shaking did the trick and big blue eyes fluttered open and the white wolf lifted her head, blinking until the young man’s face came into focus. Slowly, she pushed her herself to stand, legs and paws shaky on the cold porch, and she shook herself a bit. Her body ached all over and she knew very well that her human form was going to be in much worse shape than the wolf body she currently wore. She nuzzled Liam’s hand in a sort of “thank you” gesture before limping awkwardly up the stairs and into the Pack house to change back in her human form.
There was no doubt there were going to be a lot of injuries and Jeremy was bound to have his hands full with all of them that night. At least the thing was gone.
