Who: Dagny and Kenny with an apperance by Death
What: Dying. Literally.
Where: Just outside of town
When: Now
Warning: Car accident.
Nightmares plagued the entire town it seemed and frankly, she was not loving it. She already had them on a regular basis and now they were made worse by whatever was going on. Needing to stop thinking about all of that for a while, Dagny called up Kenny and suggested they hang out. She didn’t care what they did, she just wanted a distraction. Calling an Uber for them, she got in it and directed the man to Kenny’s place to pick him up. She texted him when they got there, she smiled as he got in. “What’s up?” She asked, scooting over to give him room.
***
As nonchalant about his deaths as he was, Kenny often had nightmares about them. Or he had about the pain of dying. The dying itself wasn't scary, but the pain? That was the part he hated the most. And now he was having bad dreams about them and they were every night and very vivid. Usually sex or drugs or both helped, but not this time.
Now he didn't really want to go to sleep either. So when Dagny invited him out, he was all for it, even though he was dead tired. He had drank an energy drink before she arrived and it was kicking in just as the Uber pulled up. He headed out and got in, settling in besides Dagny. "Oh, just having nightmares instead of sex dreams. You?"
***
“Same” She said with a sigh, her head laying on his shoulder for a minute. What she wouldn’t give for her dad to just peace out of her dreams forever so she could stop waking up with a feeling of fear and dread. She hadn’t even met the man and he was a part of her life! It was madness. After a moment, she lifted her head up and looked over at him. “I have no ideas for what we’re doing tonight. I just needed a distraction and you’re always a good one. Is there anything you’re in the mood to do?”
***
"Really? You invited me out and have no plans?" he asked as the Uber pulled out and was on the road towards town. But he was only teasing. He didn't mind. In fact, he kind of preferred being spontaneous over making plans anyway.
"Well, there is something..." he said, placing a hand on her thigh and circling his thumb against her. "But maybe not right now when we're in an Uber. Can't kick our driver out when he's on the road right now." Not that he cared if he got injured or worse, but he didn't want Dagny to die.

“We’re masters at winging it” She pointed out as the car began moving. She told the guy to just take them downtown and she would tell him when to stop once they decided what to do. She looked over at Kenny with a bit of a grin when he put his hand on her thigh and indicated what he did. “No I don’t think we should make him tuck and roll just so we can get it on in his car but maybe later” She replied, giving him a wink. “Relax, Jeremy. I’m not being for real” She told the driver with a laugh when he gave her a look.
***
"No but that would be funny," Kenny laughed. As much as he enjoyed sex, he wasn't going to make a guy leave his own car. Well, maybe if it was parked, he would. But definitely not when it was moving. And Dagny was right, there was always later.
He just grinned at Jeremy but then he suddenly yelled, "watch the fucking road!" The driver turned his attention back and swerved out of the way on an oncoming car just in time. Kenny just burst out laughing after a moment.
"That was close," he said to Dagny.
***
“Like a scene out of an action movie but better because it ends with making out instead of dying” She replied back with a laugh. Little did she knew what fate had in store for them during their car ride. When the car jerked like it did, Dagny reached out for Kenny out of instinct and held onto him like he would protect her. She let out a bit of an uneasy laugh in response to his and nodded her head. “Yeah. Close” Jeremy was definitely not getting a five star review now that was for sure. After a moment, she calmed down and let go of him. “I’m kinda hungry. Hinkles?”
***
Kenny glanced at her when she grabbed him. "Really? You're afraid of dying even though you'll come back?" He didn't see anything scary about death. Then again, this would be her first one whereas he had tons of death and was used to it.
But whatever, he was hungry so he nodded. "Yeah, Hinkles sounds good," he said and turned to tell the driver to take them there.
***
“I’m human … ish. I do feel things” She told him with a shrug as she settled back into the seat. She may be prepared to die but that didn’t mean she wasn’t scared of how it would happen, especially since this was her first one. She wasn’t where he was yet. It would take a few more deaths to get there. “I could go for a nice juicy burger right about now” She commented, not noticing that Jeremy began fiddling with the radio stations as he drove.
***
"You'll get used to it," he told her with a shrug. He didn't get the fear but then he was dying before he even knew what death was. He never knew it was something scary.
"That sounds good," he said then turned to Jeremy and rolled his eyes. "For fucks sake, again, dude? Keep your eye on the goddamn road." Especially when there was a car coming. But this time they couldn't get out of the way in time and ended up crashing.
***
“For real, du--” She started to join in cursing out their driver for being distracted but she was cut off when their car hit another car. Everything happened so fast and before she knew what happened, she had been thrown from the car and she laid unconscious at the side of the road, not looking in the best shape. She was bleeding both internally and externally with cuts, bruises, and glass in her hair. She didn’t start coming to until a few months later and when she did, she was too hurt to move. “Help…”
***
Kenny hadn't landed too far from Dagny. He was pretty banged up, though. He didn't even have to check to know he was bleeding profusely, both inside and out, and that he had several broken bones. He also knew he was going to die soon. But even though all the pain, he managed to crawl towards Dagny.
"Hey," he said. Or tried to, but after spitting out blood, he managed to speak a little more clearly. "Hey, you okay?" Well, she wasn't, but he had to know if she was okay given the circumstances at least.
***
She tried to move when she heard his voice new her but all she could do was cry out in pain, signifying that she was not okay at all. All she could do was turn her head towards him, though that hurt too. “Is this what dying feels like?” She wondered, her voice barely there and breathy from struggling to breathe normally. If this was going to be the way she went out for the first time, atleast she wasn’t alone.
***
When she could barely speak or even move her head, that was when he knew. She was dying. He slowly nodded, even though she probably could barely see him. "Yeah. It really fucking hurts," he said. He was in a lot of pain too but he was used to it. He could handle it better than she could.
"Just hang in there, okay?" Maybe someone had called for help by now. But then maybe this was her time. Maybe even if the ambulance got there and got her to the clinic, it wouldn't do any good. "Or just close your eyes. It'll be over soon." If he couldn't stop her from dying, then maybe he could help her through it at least.
***
When he confirmed that she was dying, she reached out for him and eventually found some part of him to hold onto. It would comfort her in this time being able to feel that he was close. She was quiet for a moments then she spoke as she closed her eyes. “I’m ready” She declared, wanting the pain to go away. And it did a few minutes later as the world began to go black as sirens wailed in the distance.
***
He nodded. "Okay," he said softly. He could feel himself going into that familiar darkness himself but he tried to avoid it as much as possible. He wanted stay around until she died. And once he was sure she was dead, he let go and closed his eyes, slipping into the darkness.
Several moments later, his eyes blinked open and he slowly sat up.
***
Death popped in and looked around.”Seriously.” She looked at the mess and shook her head. She knelt first by the driver. “You're an idiot.” but a living idiot. Then she checked the passenger and driver of the other car.
They'd live.
Then she turned to Dagny and Kenny, appearing at their sides without thinking.”Kenny, you know the routine.” She sent Kenny back like usual. “Sorry, Dagny, you don't get up to come back like him.” She reached out to touch her too, pain didn't exist on her side of things. “Ready to reincarnate?”
***
In the in between world, there was no pain and Dagny just looked around when she got there, taking it all in as she waited for Death to show up. “This isn’t what I pictured” She commented to Kenny as she looked over at him. She didn’t know what all of this would be like, really. She didn’t even know what she said that. She jumped a little bit when Death just appeared and turned towards her, watching her with Kenny. Just like that, he was gone and she was alone. “Doesn’t matter if I’m ready does it? I have no choice in this” She told her before breathing in deeply and nodding her head a moment later. “Let’s do it”
***
"Yeah, it's nothing special," Kenny shrugged. The Death appeared, like usual, and he grinned when he saw her.
"Yeah, yeah," he said, rolling his eyes. He knew what was going to happen. He had done this plenty of times before. "Later," he said to them, winking before he disappeared.
***
Death just kind of smiled, “Not really. Sorry about this but it's just how things go. It's a little different for everyone.” She shrugged then waved Kenny off.
“I'll be here if you need me. Just call my name.” She took Dagny by the hand and sent her back to her next life, smiling a little. Her job was just simple, no matter how much people tried to make it out to be more.
