Who: Jo and Jesse
What: Hanging out
When: Monday evening
Where: He's going to the roommate's house
Warnings: Will update if necessary
Status: Closed

Jesse hadn't slept well, and as a result he'd had a rough day. He felt like if it were his first day on the job he would have been fired for incompetence. At least he hadn't said anything inappropriate on air, but he'd had a difficult day all around. He'd clocked out and all but run out of the studio. Tomorrow would be better. Tired as he was, he was sure to sleep tonight. And hopefully without the dreams keeping him on edge and unable to fall into a deep sleep.

He felt like one of the walking dead by the time he got to Jo's place. He sighed, ran a hand through his hair and hoped it didn't look too disheveled. He was sure she'd understand, if he explained why. Maybe they could stay in and order pizza instead of going out for a bite like they'd planned.

He drew a breath and instead of knocking, texted her to let her know he was there. Knocking had a good chance of one of her room mates answering. Texting her directly hopefully meant she'd open the door to him.

Guess Jo had been lucky as she hadn't had any bad dreams last night. She knew both Kenny and Ella had as both were tired and grumpy before they had left for work this morning. She wasn't sure about Tea or Melissa, neither had mentioned anything yet.

Since neither of them could cook, Jo had decided to take it upon herself to learn some new recipes. So she was laying on the couch, scrolling through some recipes to try when she saw the message from Jesse.

She got up and answered the door. "Hey," she smiled but then it faded when she saw him. "You don't look so good. Did you have nightmares too?"

"Why? Did you have a bad night?" It just seemed like an odd question. It seemed strange that would be her first assumption seeing him looking like hell. Maybe if it was morning and he would have just woken up, but at this time of the evening, nightmares had happened a long time ago.

He stepped inside the house, though. "Because I did. Kept waking up." Because of nightmares, just as she asked, but he'd get to that later. He was more concerned about her, and if she had had nightmares too.

Jo shook her head. "No, but Ella and Kenny did. They said they had these terrible nightmares. And I was on the network earlier and it looks like a few others did too. I think something's happening again," she sighed. This town was nice but then these sort of things happened and most of the time, it affected and hurted her friends and she hated it.

She frowned as she let him in, closing the door behind him. "I'm sorry, Jesse," she said, patting his arm comfortingly. "Wanna talk about it?" She was willing to lend a ear and hopefully offer some comfort for him. Of course, she'd be cool if he didn't want to talk about either.

"Maybe in a bit? I kinda want to settle in first." Because the day had been stressful. "Everything that could go wrong did go wrong at the station today," he told her. "And I know it's because I was off kilter. But augh. I just need to decompress. I'm sorry. I probably should have called and canceled dinner. I know I'm not much company right now."

Jesse wasn't typically one to go on like that. He wasn't stoic, he wasn't afraid to show emotion, but this was uncharacteristic of him and he knew it. He felt like an outsider in his own skin, at the moment.

He hadn't felt that way since he'd lived under his parent's roof.

"Yeah, sure. Whenever you're ready." Jo was patient. Whenever he was up for talking about the nightmares, she'd be there for him.

She led the way into the living room, frowning as he rambled on and on about his day. She may have only known him for awhile, but already she could tell he wasn't usually like this. The nightmares must've had a big affect on him.

"It's fine, don't worry about it," she said as she sat on the couch. "Do you still want to go to dinner? Or we can stay and order something instead."

He sat down beside her. He was mentally unsettled, but aware enough to realise he was inadvertantly taking it out on her. He didn't want that. She didn't deserve that. He drew a breath, stretched and rolled his shoulders in an effort to realise some of the tension he was feeling.

"My father was...he wanted a son he could throw a ball with, a son who would stand with him and work on the car on Sunday afternoons. I...wasn't that son. He thought my interest in ballet and piano and singing made me less than a man. I had made peace with that, because I didn't think it was right to conform to his expectations, I had to be true to myself. But it's all coming back now, because of the dreams I had last night."

He sighed and scrubbed a hand over his face. "He would have disowned me if my mother had let him. He wasn't even at my graduation when I went home a couple weeks ago." His hand fell away from his face and he sought her hand to hold it. "I'm sorry. I know this isn't what you were expecting for a dinner date. If you want me to go..."

Jo nodded as she listened, also reaching and giving his shoulders a light squeeze as he spoke, hoping to relieve some of the tension he was feeling and maybe making him feel a little better.

"Oh Jesse, I'm sorry," she said once he finished. "None of that makes you less of a man. I'm glad you stayed true to yourself because you're wonderful just the way you are." And she sincerely meant that. He really was amazing and it broke her heart that his father wasn't proud of him like a father should be. She held his hand, squeezing it in a comforting way.

When he said something about leaving, she shook her head. "Nonsense. Don't be sorry. We can do something else if you want. Maybe stay in, order takeout, watch a movie?" she suggested.

Jesse nodded. He really didn't deserve Jo. She was too good to him, too sweet and calm and understanding. And adaptable. She was one of those people who could just go with the flow. Jesse kind of envied that.

"I don't think I'm in any shape to be going out," he told her. And really. His nightmares were pretty tame. There was no blood and gore, no senseless violence. But the trauma of his childhood, particularly when he was a teenager, was pretty real and pretty damaging to him.

"I'm sorry, though. I don't mean to be so...worked up."

It really depended on the situation. Sudden dinner plans, she could deal with. But she still couldn't get used to the strange things that happened here, no matter how hard she tried.

"Then we'll stay in," she decided before she put an arm around him. "And stop apologizing. It's okay, Jesse. Nightmares can be rough, no matter what they are." Sure his dreams weren't as bad as others' but it didn't mattered, they obviously bothered him. "Just try and relax. Are you hungry?"

"You're amazing, you know that?" He managed a smile for her. He really had kind of lucked out in meeting her. They'd met randomly, and just kind of hit it off. He was grateful for her presence in his life.

"I am. I haven't eaten all day." More like he hadn't been able to get near food. The thought of eating had made him feel nauseated. He felt moderately better, now that he was here with her.

"I know. And you are too. Don't let anyone tell you differently." Because he really was. And if she had to keep telling him that everyday, then she would.

"What would you like? Chinese? Pizza? Something else?" she asked. "But to be honest, I'm sick of pizza right now. We order that everyday." None of them really cooked and she was seriously considering learning a few recipes or two.

"I don't eat much pizza anyway. It's not good on my throat." Not that he was in the mood to sing right then. he still didn't really care for pizza. It was fine once in a while, but it had never been his favorite anyway.

"Let's get Chinese," he said. "And maybe watch a movie or something. Anything, really. I'm just happy to be here with you." He already felt a lot better than he had before, just because he was here with her.

"Really? I didn't know that," Jo said. There were a lot of foods she didn't know wasn't good for the throat until she met Jesse. But then she never met a singer before. It was quite interesting.

"Sure. Want your usual?" she asked. They had Chinese together a few times and she knew what he liked. "And sure. If you want, you can choose something from Netflix while I order the food."

Dairy was, as a rule, had a weird effect on singing. He didn't avoid it 100%, but he didn't eat a lot of cheese or ice cream. It probably wouldn't matter now, he wasn't going to break into song any time soon. But still.

Jesse nodded. "Yeah. My usual's good. I'm going to find something brainless. I don't want to think. Or feel." If he were alone, he'd probably go with something animated, like that new Trolls series or something. But he'd look for something that was heavy on the action, and not so much on the drama. Maybe a stupid comedy.

"Alright," Jo replied and went into the other room to place their order. When she finished, she walked back into the living room.

"Food should be here in thirty minutes," she told him before sitting next to him on the couch. "So what are we watching?" she asked.

Netflix was cued up, and on the main screen. Jesse sighed. "I don't know. I'm having a hard time making a decision."

He hated feeling this way. He was supposed to be past all the drama and trauma of his childhood. he'd made a conscious effort to put it all behind him. One night of poor sleep and unpleasant dreams, and he was feeling like a worthless waste of space again, the way his father made him feel throughout his childhood and teen years.

Jo glanced at the screen, looking quickly at all the titles. "How about that one?" she pointed. "Seems like a nice romantic comedy. Or maybe a Disney movie?" she suggested.

She looked at the titles some more then turned to him. "Or we can do something else. We don't have to watch a movie."

"No, a movie's fine. That one looks good." He knew he wasn't good company right now, but he was grateful she was willing to put up with him anyway. Just one more reason he knew she was special.

He sighed, started the movie, and settled in to watch it for as long as his attention held.
