Who: Johnny Storm and Izzy Lightwood What: They had a baby! When: Friday evening Where: The Clinic Warnings: None Status: Closed/Complete
To say that Izzy was completed exhausted was an understatement, but the adrenaline pumping through her was keeping her awake - of course the baby in her arms that she’d just spent the last few hours screaming through labour to get out could also have something to do with it. She’d never really believed in that unconditional love at first sight thing but now she knew she’d been wrong all this time. As she looked at Max, she knew she’d do anything for him even if he was a little wrinkly and weird looking right now.
***
Johnny had, predictably, started to freak out when they realized that Izzy was in labour. But he’d called Sue for moral support and in the end, everything was worth it. They’d handed him Max for a few seconds, let him hold the weird little ball of wrinkles and redness, and the fear and worry didn’t go away but it didn’t matter anymore. That was his kid, their kid, and there was nothing Johnny wasn’t going to do to be there for him, with him.
When everything was quiet, Max sleeping against Izzy’s chest and all the medical staff cleared out, even Sue chased away to go do some stuff for them, make sure the house was ready for when they went home, Johnny dragged a chair over beside the bed, leaning in with a hand on Izzy’s hair to press a kiss to her forehead before he sat.
“You grew a pretty freaky little lump,” he commented affectionately.

If she had been asked Izzy was pretty sure the fear and worry would always be there in some degree but they’d learn to push it to the back of their minds eventually. That was what she told herself anyway.
She laughed softly, “I know right? Who knew this would be what our genes combined would look like. I’m glad we’ve seen him older and know he gets prettier” she grinned, keeping hold of the baby with one arm while her other sought out Johnny’s hand, relaxing a little against the pillows. She’d get tired eventually but right now that adrenaline was keeping her going.

“He’s got to, right?” Johnny laughed, mindful to keep quiet so as not to disturb the baby. Was this their life now? Talking in murmurs and whispers while Max just slept?
Didn’t seem so bad.
Squeezing Izzy’s hand, he let his other hand rest on Max’s back. He’d been told time and time again in the past, by people with babies, not to be afraid of hurting them with his natural heat, that it was probably comforting and made them feel safe, and Johnny didn’t even think; he just needed to do that for his son. “I kind of like his dumb face right now, though.”
He was completely in love with the dumb baby face.
***
“Me too” Izzy agreed, the warmth from Johnny would definitely be a comfort to Max and they would no doubt use it a lot to get him to sleep once they got back home and had start working out how to be actual parents.
“Well done by the way, for not like passing out or anything” she couldn’t help teasing him a little, squeezing his hand to show she was only teasing though the smile on her face was a giveaway.
***
“I gotta tell you, it was close.” She might be teasing, but there’d been a few seconds there when Johnny really had thought passing out might be a pretty solid approach. “We’re lucky Sue came to save our asses.”
Also because his sister had a lot cooler a head than Johnny did. Having her nearby had been a huge help.
“Speaking of sisters, you want me to text some people? Let them know he’s here?” It would probably wind up being an announcement to the world at large, knowing Johnny, but it was a genuine offer at least, to let the people they cared about know that their family had officially expanded and he was great, just like his parents.
***
“She’s been amazing” Izzy agreed, there was no way either of them could have done it without her. Her calm manner instantly helped and she was very grateful for it.
“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea. Let everybody know mother and baby are doing well, isn’t that how it’s usually phrased? I’m sure I read that in one of the books” she said, “Be prepared too I bet at least one person asks for the weight, I don’t know why that’s a thing but it is” While reading the books Izzy had decided that people focused on some strange things when people had babies but then she already knew she and Johnny weren’t going to be typical parents so a lot of the stuff probably wouldn’t be relevant anyway.
***
“I’ll tell them who cares, he looks like a potato,” Johnny said with a grin. Besides, he hadn’t really paid attention to that kind of stuff. He didn’t care how much the baby weighed or how long he was or any of that crap. He’d only really heard the time and took one look at their kid’s face and that was it for him. Everything else was just noise. “I’ll take care of it in a while.”
Right now he was more interested in just hanging out with her and with Max.
It was crazy how cool just doing that sounded right now.
***
Izzy laughed, “Perfect” she agreed, because he did look a bit like a wrinkly potato, there was no denying that. But he was theirs and to Izzy that meant he was perfect anyway.
“Hold him for a bit?” she requested, her body was slowly losing it’s adrenaline and aches and pains were working their way through her. Nothing too bad but being able to relax her arm would be good.
***
Even just a week ago, Johnny would have objected. He would have said it was a bad idea, been worried that he’d break the baby or something. Now, absolutely he was going to hold his kid.
Without any hesitation he nodded and moved to take Max from her arms, cradling him against his chest. He was crazy small, crazy fragile, and Johnny had read somewhere that he had too many bones right now because they just kind of fused together in the first couple of months. So that was weird.
“You good?” Of course he worried about Izzy at the same time. She’d done all the hard parts of this whole baby thing.
***
Izzy noted the lack of hesitation in Johnny and it warmed her. They’d be okay, she felt sure of that as she watched him take Max and look at him with such adoration on his face that her breath caught. She knew in that moment she would do anything for her little family.
Smiling she nodded, “Yeah, starting to feel a bit tired” she admitted, being a shadowhunter she didn’t like showing weakness but with Johnny she didn’t feel the need to deny it.
***
“Take a nap,” Johnny advised. He’d have taken her hand again but he wasn’t confident enough to hold the baby with just one arm yet. “Sue’ll come back any time now, so I’ve got this.”
Or rather Sue would have it. She was a lot more knowledgeable about babies. And for once, Johnny wouldn’t even mock her or anything. He appreciated someone who knew what the hell was happening.
“I mean, unless he gets hungry or something. Then that’s all you.”
***
Izzy smiled, “Yeah, we’re going to have to work on that” she said watching her boys together and thinking what a lovely picture they made before she let her eyes close. Face turned towards them even as she let herself fall into a tired slumber, “I love you” was the last thing she mumbled before giving in completely.
