Waking up generally involved at least a few seconds of confusion trying to remember what day it was and whether or not she had to get up depending on what time it was, but this morning was especially confusing for Dawn. She knew immediately that she wasn’t in her own bed and it only took a moment for her to realize that she wasn’t alone.
It took a few more moments for her to realize that she was in bed with Ian and for the memories of the last few days to come flooding back. They’d forgotten everything, just like that time back in Sunnydale. And she and Ian thought they were a couple. She buried her face in her hands and groaned, not thinking about the fact that the movement and noise were likely to wake him up.
At times like these, Dawn hated this town.

The first thing Ian was aware of was that he was not alone in his bed, which was not necessarily a bad thing, but there was something weird about it, something that felt different. He opened his eyes and saw Dawn in bed beside him. “Oh shit!” he exclaimed in alarm. He was NOT expecting a girl, much less his friend Dawn.
And then he remembered. Their memories gone, thinking they were a couple, the whole thing. He stared at her, trying to determine if it wasn’t just some really weird, extremely detailed dream.
But it was no dream. There she was, in bed beside him, looking about as shocked as he felt. “Oh shit…” he said more quietly this time.

“Um, yeah,” Dawn said, rolling over so she could look at him. This far surpassed the awkwardness of the time she kissed him thinking they were on a date. He was one of her closest friends and she really hoped this wasn’t going to change that.
She brushed her hair out of her face. “Well, on the upside, we have our memories back.” They still didn’t seem to know why they’d lost them in the first place, but she knew where she lived now and could go home to her own bed and clothes. She’d been wearing stuff she borrowed from him and Wanda for the past few days.

Of course Ian didn’t blame Dawn for anything. She was just as much a victim of the memory loss as he was, and he’d certainly been a willing participant in kissing her.
“Yeah, it’s great we finally remember everything. I guess other people are probably getting theirs back too.” Not that he understood how any of this worked, but it seemed to fit with the twisted logic of this town that since everybody lost their memories at the same time, they’d get them back at the same time too.
“I’m really sorry about...you know...this. Kissing you and stuff. I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to slap me or something. At least we didn’t...you know.” He was so glad he didn't have to try to explain that that Magnus. It was going to be hard enough to tell him as it was.

Dawn’s cheeks flushed. “Yeah, that’s definitely good.” She would not have wanted her first time to be with her gay friend while neither of them had their memories. “But you don’t have to apologize. It made sense that we thought we were together. And I appreciate you taking care of me.”
Now that she had her memories, she remembered how scared she was without them and how kind Ian had been during the whole thing. She was really lucky to have him as a friend.
***
Ian was glad they hadn’t because he was pretty sure it would have been an embarrassing disaster if they had tried. Now that he had his memories he remembered Mandy’s attempt, and he didn’t want to inflict that on Dawn, or for either of them to be humiliated like that.
“It did make a lot of sense at the time.” He agreed. “And it was fun hanging out together. I’m sure the whole thing would have been a lot worse without you here.” It would have been so lonely and isolating, to be stuck here without a friend in the world. Like when he’d first arrived here only worse.

As someone who was used to being alone, Dawn understood what it was like to feel lonely and isolated. “It was fun,” she said. “And apparently I don’t need memories to kick your butt at video games.” She couldn’t help teasing him a little.
“I hope Buffy’s okay,” she said. “I should message her and let her know that I’ll be home soon.”
***
Ian laughed at her comment. “Yeah, of all the things to remember, thank god you kept your Mario Kart skills, right?” He was glad they could joke about it. That was probably a good sign.
“Good idea. She’s probably just waking up and remembering things. If you call her now she won’t have time to worry about you.” He slid out of bed, and realizing that he was wearing just boxers and a t-shirt, quickly found a pair of sweat pants and pulled them on. “Just, maybe don’t tell her about all this?” He waved a hand, indicating his bed and their situation in general. “I wouldn’t want her to get the wrong idea and come after me.”
***
Dawn chuckled. “I’m pretty sure Buffy will be glad that you took good care of me,” she said. “If I hadn’t been with you when this all started, I wouldn’t have had anywhere to go.” The thought of that was pretty terrifying and she was glad it hadn’t come to that.
Luckily, she was wearing a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt, probably Ian’s, so she felt like she was pretty well covered. “I’ll have to thank your guardians too. Maybe send them a fruit basket or something.” They had been really nice to let her hang out there when she didn’t have anywhere else to go.
***
“Wanda and John are pretty cool.” He agreed. They’d always been the right balance of supportive and hands-off with him, whether they had memories or not.
“It was really great having you here, you know? Weird. But great.” As crazy dome experiences went, he figured this one wasn’t that bad. Sure, it had been a huge shock, but as long as they were still friends there was no real harm in it.

“Maybe we can have video game sleepovers sometimes,” Dawn suggested. Just with 100% less kissing.
She leaned over and kissed his cheek before finding her shoes and putting them on. “Definitely not going to school today. I’ll see you tomorrow though. Or this weekend.” They may not feel like going to school tomorrow either.
***
“That would be fun.” Ian smiled, but he wondered what Magnus would think of that once he heard about what happened. Ian was definitely going to have some explaining to do, and having more sleepovers with Dawn, even with 100% less kissing and no sleeping in the same bed, might seem slightly suspect.
“I don’t think anyone’s going to school today. Or much of anywhere else.” Ian smiled when she kissed his cheek. “Text me and let me know if everything’s alright with your sister and everything when you get home, OK?” Hopefully everything would be back to normal now, but you never knew around here.
