“I was wondering when I should expect you.” Ana’s voice remained even as she tucked a bookmark into her book. An introduction to the looming shadow wasn’t necessary. She could smell the liquor and cigarette smoke the moment he had stepped inside the quiet coffee shop. He didn’t answer her right away. In fact, FP Jones considered not saying anything at all. He had had enough encounters in his life where words weren’t necessary. While this could have been one of those times, FP had some dignity left in his bones. There were only a few women who weren’t worthy of what was left and none of them were here. Thankfully. “Would you like to sit?” “Might as well.” Ana had handled plenty of people like FP. She had handled situations like the one that was presented to her. She had been aware of FP’s presence despite Jughead wanting to keep it quiet. Ana could understand his reasoning, but she had hoped he would have been open and direct with her. It was clear that trust was still a subject they would have to work on, but Ana could understand why. One reason was sitting before her looking worse for wear. “Your son was placed under my guardianship upon arrival because of his age. All refugees under the age of eighteen are assigned to one. If you were curious.” That could be the only reason why FP had sought her out. It certainly couldn’t be for a friendly chat over afternoon tea and biscuits. “You taking care of him?” That was a question that Ana was not expecting. She wasn’t entirely sure why, but it was clear from the way she tilted her head and lifted her chin that she was skeptical of where his intentions were going. “Of course. He has a warm bed, food to eat, money to do with as he pleases within reason. There are rules, but he respects them.” That got a laugh from FP and he finally wore that greasy smirk on his face. “Give him all the rules you want, lady. He don’t have to follow them.” The corner of Ana’s mouth twitched just so, but she remained collected. “Your son is a very bright young man, Forsythe.” Now it was FP’s turn to give Ana a look. A look that most people back in Riverdale would not want to be on the receiving end of even on a good day. “While it is true I am not aware of the history you two share, I won’t allow you to ruin what he has been building for himself here. Is that understood?” That was exactly what FP wanted for Jughead. He wanted him to be living that good life with friends, going to school, and doing for himself everything that FP couldn’t. That was all he ever wanted. Still, Jughead was his son and he also wanted to be the father that he never was. Never would be. He could, though. He could try. Then again, Ana was taking care of him and everything seemed to be going well. He could just roll with this new life. No worries about Serpent business. Not dealing with the Northside issues. It was a lot to consider. “You take care of him, but I wanna see him. Don’t keep him from doing that and we’re good, got it?” “I wouldn’t keep your son from you. I just don’t want to see him hurt.” Which was fair in FP’s opinion. Jughead certainly did get himself a good guardian. “Deal.” Holding out his hand, Ana reached over and gave it a firm shake. One that made FP grin. “Quite a grip for a woman your age.” “Maybe I’ll give you some lessons.” She had bite and FP could respect that. Putting some money onto the table, he stood and gave Ana a nod. “I’m gonna do right by him here. Make sure he knows that.” Ana gave a nod as well and only looked back down to her book when he had left. She would wait to see how things panned out. After all, actions always spoke louder than words. |
