Although Tessa still had issues with the fact that her magical powers came from her demon father, she had accepted and even embraced her magic. The source of it might come from hell, but she was determined to do good with it. She had been learning how to use and control it, and Hermione was one of the people who had helped her. So at the opening of her shop, Tessa was here to support her. It seemed many others were as well, which was nice to see. Spotting a familiar face, she made her way over. “Mrs. Potter,” she said, her old-fashioned tendencies surfacing again. “It is good to see you.” *** Lily was exceptionally proud of Hermione and all the work she’d put into getting the co-op opened. It would be a wonderful resource for all of the magic users in the town. She had done what she could to help with the preparations and now that the shop was open to the public, she was making it a point to drop by as often as she could as a patron to help it flourish. “Mrs. Carstairs,” she said, greeting the other young woman with a warm smile. “It’s a pleasure. How have you and yours been?” Now that Harry was into seemingly everything, Lily realized that she hadn’t taken much time to connect with the people in town that she considered acquaintances and potential friends. Tessa was certainly in that category. *** “Quite well, thank you,” Tessa said warmly. Indeed, she and Jem and Will have continued to be extremely happy. Although they had not spoken further of creating a family of their own, Tessa was content to know that Jem was at least open to the idea of one, when he had been so stoutly against it before. “And Harry - how is he?” She knew, from speaking to Hermione, that Harry was much younger than what Hermione was used to. But this also meant that Harry was with both his parents, which was apparently not the case at home. *** “He turned two on New Year’s Eve,” Lily said. “So he’s rather curious and getting into everything.” Not that she was complaining. At home, she and James hadn’t been able to see him grow past a year and a half. Even if the twos were terrible, she was grateful to be experiencing them. She supposed they would need to think about potty training soon. That would be a potentially difficult undertaking. *** “Oh, I hear that is quite the challenging age,” Tessa said with a small laugh. She had been too young herself to remember when Nate had been a child of two, but from the stories her aunt had told… Her smile faltered slightly upon remembering her aunt and brother’s fate, but she quickly recovered. “Did you bring him today?” *** There was far too much going on for Lily to bring Harry along today. “No, he’s at home with James right now,” she said. “I wanted an opportunity to browse without having to mind him.” Especially since he was at the age where he wanted to touch and play with everything. At least he wasn’t demonstrating any magical abilities yet. “Is there anything in particular you were looking for here, or are you just browsing?” Lily asked. *** “Browsing for now,” Tessa said. “I am not yet comfortable making potions of my own.” She was learning from the magic users here, but so far she felt as if she had better control over magic she was creating herself, as opposed to potions or charms. That did not mean, however, that she was uninterested in others who did use potions. “What are you looking for?” *** Lily shrugged. “Nothing in particular,” she said. “I am just familiarizing myself with what’s available and trying to figure out if there is anything I have or can provide that would also be useful.” It was hard not having access to Diagon Alley to pick up whatever they needed, but their visit to that odd little town around Halloween had at least given them an opportunity to pick up some much needed items. “Would you like some lessons in making potions?” *** Tessa perked up. “I would very much like that. But I cannot ask that of you, not when you already have your hands so full with your toddler.” That was the priority in Tessa’s mind: Harry and his happiness. She could be just as content without knowing how to make potions. But she knew what it meant to Lily and to Harry to have his parents here with him. *** “Oh, it’s no bother at all,” Lily assured her. “Harry can spend time with his father or with Hermione.” Or perhaps with the Weasleys or Sirius. “I’d be happy to assist you with improving your skills.” She would enjoy having an excuse to make potions anyway. *** “Then I will very happily accept,” Tessa said with a smile. “My schedule is very flexible, so I shall leave it to you to determine a time best suited to you.” She was looking forward to this. Although she had continued to learn to use her magic since Magnus’s departure, there were many disciplines she had not developed. Potions was one of them. *** It would be fun to share her experience with another, less experienced, magic user. Even if their magic wasn’t exactly the same, potions tended to be very similar from one world to the next from what Lily had seen during her time here. “Brilliant,” she said. “I’ll talk to James and then get some supplies so we can get started.” *** “In the meantime, I shall let you get back to browsing,” Tessa said. “I look forward to our lessons.” |
