She had allowed Al to ply his trade on her ribs but let her shoulder repair on it's own. She had a sling to keep it from too much movement though she had been advised (and truly already knew) to use the arm a little bit.
Sage sat at the kitchen table, looking grumpy. She disliked the sling and the fact her shoulder hurt. Her bruises had faded and the cuts were mostly healed, but she was tired of this. Being the hero was painful.
“Why did I save Erik again?”’ She grumbled not for the first time.
***
“Because it seemed like a good idea at the time?” Remy drawled the words as he set dinner down in front of her. He went back, got his, and joined her. He was getting her through this, even if she was a grumpy kitten sometimes.
“Now eat. The more energy you have, the faster you heal.” He grinned at her as he nudged her foot with a toe.
***
“Remind me to knock that off. It hurts. And I hate pain.” She grumbled as she looked up at him and accepted the food without arguing. “He's not the one David was hunting, he didn't deserve it. But did I have to go through a window?”
She started in on dinner. “I know, I know. This just sucks, Remy. I don't get in the middle of things but I had no choice.”
******
“Some things are hardwired. You are a soldier and a hero, a guardian. You run into danger, instead of away from it.” He smiled at her and shook his head. “My hero.”
He said it sincerely, softly, as he looked at her.
“Next time, call me.”
***
“I should, in theory, be able to unwire that habit you know.” Then a slow one-shouldered shrug. “I'll run into danger forever. I just wish it didn't hurt sometimes.”
Sage gave him a soft look.
“I called who could bind him. I didn't want to put anyone else at risk. It wasn't a perfect solution and I hope I don't need to do it again here.”
***
Remy gave her a Look himself. “I understand why, and I know you can take care of yourself, but this is what I do, too, remember?” he gently touched her face, then nodded. He would not push it, but he hated having not been there at her side.
“What’s the prognosis on how long till the sling comes off?”
*** She leaned forward to kiss him softly. “I know. I know.” she smiled a bit, then shrugged again, wincing a little. “Start using my arm this week, sling off in two more, shouldn’t take long to heal, really.” she wrinkled her nose.
“It hurts like a bitch but I guess that’s what I get. I’m not tough like everyone else. I’m just smarter. It could have been worse.”
***
“Yes it could have. But I'm glad you're getting well.” Remy ran a hand over her back gently before settling to eat again.
“No dying.”
*** Sage sighed then turned to eat. “I'll get there. No permanent damage is expected. It was a clean break even if I aggravated it with continual fighting.”
“I might be breakable but I'm hard to kill.”
******
“I have faith in you. And I know you are tough. I worry, but not out of lack of faith, chere’.” One hand touched one of hers, then he smiled. “And I do love how you wiggle when I go down on you like this.”
***
Sage curled her fingers over his. “Though I am annoyed there's nothing I can do to not be so breakable.” She had her alone halfway to her lips and stopped.
“Oh yeah. It's only because I can't actually have sex right now, you know, terribly frustrating.” That was just too much pressure and movement on her shoulder. It irked her.
***
“I know. Trust me, I know.” He nibbled one lip as he thought. “Have you thought of asking Drake to use his costume machine to make you a more armored costume?” Something less breakable and more… bouncy, maybe?
*** Sage looked at him. “I had not thought of such a thing, no. I did not intend to get into the middle of things if I can help it.” Her lips twisted into a smirk. “But if you think it might be a good idea.”
***
“You are a hero, whether you like it or not. It might be best if you had suits that allowed you to act so, when needed. I know it is not a thing you intend, but you will no more run from danger than I will.” he grinned at her, eyes dancing a brighter red.
“I just want you to be as safe as possible, chere’.”
*** Sage relented..”as you wish, my dear. You are right, of course. I cannot simply run from things. I will always run to them.”
She tilted her head to the side. “Is it because you love me?” Yeah, she asked that.
***
“Half that, yes. But also… you’re an X-Man, Sage. And we take care of our own.” His eyes burned cold in the next moment. “David ever comes in my sights, he dies.” it was a simple statement.
“I love you more than I can say. And I would bleed if you died.”
***
Sage laughed softly, “I swear we must be hard-wired to run to save our own, though I am hard pressed to call Erik one of ours. But he is.” Then she stilled and looked at him sharply. “You will do no such thing, Remy. I prevented him from killing Erik, I do do the same to you. I will not have that happen while I am here do you understand?” She was ice cold. She wanted no deaths on their hands. Not here.
“I will not die.” She yawned, being upright was hard. “I am honored you love me. I love you. I believe that is the correct emotion. I'm still getting thru that.”
*******
“He is, yes, despite our wants or wishes.” he nodded as he looked at her, and he smirked.
He sighed at her, and grumbled, but nodded his head with a jerk. “Anyone else asked or said it that way, and it would not go well. For you? Fine.”
And he meant it, despite his tone.
“Its okay if it takes time, you know. Not everyone runs at the same speed.”
He eyed her. “Looks like its about nap time. Mind company?”
*** Sage snorted at him. “I know but it is me and I am telling you. I'd ask but I'm serious. He's fixable. I just don't know how yet. Killing isn't the right choice for now.” She smiled softly at him.
“I have never loved before, Remy. I know facts. Emotions are harder to understand. Well, some are. Anger is easy. Passion is easy. The subtle ones are harder.”
She nodded. “I would not argue company as long as you bring an ice pack with you for me to lay on.” A smile that could start wars curled her lips.
***
“As you wish.” He nodded, and leaned in to kiss her. “For you, and because i value your opinion. Let’s find a way to give the boy another chance.” he nodded.
“Love’s always hard. From the first time to the last time.” He smiled at her, eyes gentle.
“I will even bring two.” He smirked at her as he rose and offered her a hand, eyes dancing with a brilliant red that was all hers.
*** She leaned up into the kiss and nodded softly. “Thank you, Remy. It is important. This place is for second chances. He deserves it.”
“Is that so? I'll have to keep that in mind.” She got up with his help, wincing a bit, then nodded. “Thank you, my dear. My aching shoulder thanks you too.” She was ready for bed, again. It annoyed her but what could you do?
