It was after school and Mitsuko, for once, didn't skip any classes. Aside from going to Hinkles for lunch, she had stayed in school. After classes were over, she decided to go to Starbucks and grab something to drink and maybe a little snack before she headed home. She walked inside, getting in line. The person in front of her happened to be Billy.
She hadn't spoken to him since the New Year's Eve party, when she had kissed him. She wasn't sure if he remembered and if he did, what he thought about it. She had gotten really drunk afterward and didn't remember much, but she had remembered that. She hadn't meant to kiss him, though. She was slightly tipsy at the time and just acted impulsively.
She debated whether or not to say hi. Eventually, she made up her mind. "Hey, Billy. How's it going?" she asked. If she was nervous or felt awkward, she sure hid it well.
***
“Mitsuko! Hey, how are you?” He smiled. “I’m good.” It had been weeks since he had seen her, not since the party where she had kissed him. Wow. Now he remembered that and it was a little awkward.
“Hey, ah. How have you been, since new Year’s eve, right?” Subtle, there, Batson, subtle…
***
"I've been good." Kind of great actually since she'd been sleeping with someone often. It had definitely been awhile since she'd been with anyone.
At the mention of New Year's Eve, she felt a little odd. At least, inside she did. She definitely didn't show it on the outside. She'd become very good at hiding how she was truly feeling. "Yeah, New Year's," she nodded. She paused then added, "so about that kiss..." But she didn’t say anything else. She was simply testing the waters, seeing what his reaction would be if she brought it up.
***
Billy was surprised when she raised that topic. He smiled warmly. “It was a good kiss, even if it was unexpected and confusing. I figured you didn’t really like me, I mean, as more than just ‘that guy who found me’.” He flushed a little.
“You’re someone I care about, and we should probably talk about it.”
***
If he had a negative reaction, Mitsuko would've played it off as if she was really drunk and that was why she kissed him in the first place. That she hadn't even remembered it. But it wasn't negative. It wasn't completely positive either since he was rather confused by it. So was she when she thought about it. Why did she kiss him then?
"Yeah. How about we get our drinks and we can find a table and chat?" she suggested. Talking about this in a line at Starbucks probably wasn't the best idea. It'd be better to sit down and talk. Besides, he was next up to order anyway.
***
”Sure.” He smiled at her and squeezed her shoulder gently, nodding. Stepping up, he ordered, still very confused, and as a result, he did as he sometimes did and ordered a tonne of food and a very large drink, stepping aside to wait for his order.
He contemplated her as he did so. Why had she kissed him? Did she like him? How did he feel about that? Why were things so confusing?
*** Since she was nearby, she had heard what he ordered. "That's a lot of food," she commented with a slight, teasing grin. Then it was her turn and she did the opposite, ordering just a latte and a pastry she saw in the display case that looked quite delicious.
Once they got their food, they found an empty table to sit down. Mitsuko took the cap off her latte and blew on it to cool it a bit. Maybe also to bide her time as she tried to think of what to say. Usually she did. She could come up with lies off the top of her head, but right now? She couldn't think of anything. And it annoyed her.
***
“I’m a growing boy.” And the hormones he was taking were making him hungrier than normal, also. Which stress also did, and he ran every day, and… anyway. Yes.
Billy smiled as he sipped his drink and nibbled a cupcake. “I’m glad we can talk, even if neither of us knows what to say. “ he nodded and bit into a croissant as he thought.
“How was crazy week for you this time?”
***
"Yeah, me too," Mitsuko replied, taking a careful sip of her latte, careful not to burn herself. She did like Billy and would hate if anything changed between them just because of one, impulsive kiss. She was about to bring it up again but then he asked about her week.
"It was alright. Nothing happened to me but it did to a few people I know."
***
Billy nodded. “I left notes for myself, apparently. My older self left notes for me, that is.” He grinned as sampled his food, slowly. He was not in a hurry.
“I’m sorry he didn’t visit with you. Apparently he spent most of the time hiding out in his own place.”
*** Mitsuko glanced up. "Really? My older self left a letter for me from a few months ago. I never read it, though." She didn't know why, but she just never did. It was tucked away in one of her drawers at home.
"It's fine," she said, waving him off. "I was visited by other friends. It's all good," she told him.
***
“Why not? I read mine right away.” he grinned at her. He had no problem at all looking at his letter and getting some clues. At least he knew his little chest problem would pass. He was wearing his shirt and a binder under it.
Having gynecomastia was a pain, but he knew, now,it would be over within a year of treatment.
“Cool. Do you wanna go to a movie or something some time?”
*** "Good question." She didn't really know why she didn't read the letter. She just never did yet.
"Like on a date or just as friends?" she asked. More like she blurted it out. Before she would've just figured they'd go as just friends. But since the kiss was on her mind, she wondered if he wanted something a little more.
***
Billy blinked. “Well, I meant just as a friend, but…” he blinked and thought about it. “Maybe as a sort of date?” he chuckled. “I’m not good at the whole people thing, so I tend to go slow on things.”
He paused. “What would you like it to be? Because that is important too.”
*** Mitsuko had to pause. She was usually sure of herself but right now, she wasn't. Did she want it to be a date or just hanging out as friends? Did she like him or did she only like him because he was nice to her? She wasn't sure and it annoyed her.
After awhile, she spoke. "Maybe as a sort of date?" she said. "And if it goes well, we can go on an actual date?"
***
“I like that idea. We can see what happens.” He nodded. He had no idea if he wanted a real date, or if they should just be friends, but this is how you found out, right?
“So, we should definitely do that.” He likes Mitsuko. He had ever since he had met her the first day she had arrived.
*** "Sounds good to me," Mitsuko said. She wasn't sure either. Usually she just hooked up with guys, she rarely went on an actual date before. Or an actual sort of date in this case. She wasn't sure how to go about it but this sounded good.
"How about next week?"
***
“That sounds perfect. Maybe on Friday? Since it is not a full out date, we don’t have to worry about staying out late or anything. “ he grinned at her.
“And I can dine you and hang with you, and maybe steal another kiss.”
***
"Friday's good for me," she replied with a smile.
"I like the sound of that. And is it stealing if I allow the kiss?" she asked with a grin and a wink.
***
“Awesome!” he grinned and toasted her with his drink.
“No, probably not.” He arched an eyebrow at her. “Are you saying you would allow me to kiss you?”
*** Mitsuko smiled back, raising her own drink.
"That's exactly what I'm saying," she told him.
***
“Well, then.” And he got up, came around, and kissed her. It was a short kiss, and warm, and then he headed back to his seat.
“Good to know.”
***
She hadn't expected him to kiss her right then and there, but it was still definitely welcomed. "You're a good kisser," she told him. He was sweet about it too.
She suddenly received a text and she checked her phone quickly. "Oh, looks like I have to get going. I'll see you on Friday, yeah?"
***
Billy blushed. “Thanks.” He grinned at her.
“Absolutely. I’ve got the check. You have a good week, and i will see you then!”
