Evan woke up after a sound sleep that had been punctuated by the dreams of a small child. He'd been happy, more inclined to giggle than stutter and stammer. He recalled climbing every possible thing, but of course the trees were his favorite. There was one tree in particular that he'd loved to climb, the one his five year old mind perceived as the tallest tree in Madison Valley.
He woke up, very aware that he was alone in his room he was supposed to be sharing with Connor. His right hand went to his left, his fingers almost shocked to find the flesh and bone instead of the hard plaster cast he'd had for so long. His eyes darted to the shelf where the cast sat, Connor's name preserved due to Adam deliberately saving the signature when he'd cut the cast off Evan's arm.
He rolled out of bed, picked the cast up, and caressed Connor's name. His finger traced over the gigantic letters, and then he stared at the writing for a long moment before he set the cast down. He stood it up, and nestled it onto the shelf with a few of his other things. He stepped back, looking intently at the cast for another long moment before he was able to turn away.
Connor had been sent home. Evan hadn't actually experienced the whims of the dome in such a way before, but he knew basically how it worked. Connor had been returned home as a small child. Evan decided to believe he'd been in Madison Valley so that he could reset his life. Because he'd been a child when he was sent home, he returned to his childhood. And because of his time in Madison, even if he didn't remember it back home, he had a new strength, new insight, and maybe things would work out differently for him. Anything else was unacceptable to Evan, but if he held on to that belief, then Connor was fine. Connor was going to be just fine.
Evan was actually almost smiling as he left his room and took care of the morning routine before heading to the kitchen to find something to nibble on before school.
