Who: Alec Lightwood and Harry Dresden
What: Oh hey I remember you!
When: Before the plot
Where: Hinkle’s
Warnings: Nada
Status: Closed/Match-up/Complete
Alec had gotten to the point where he was starting to find things about town that he actually liked besides his sister being there. (He was even liking that Johnny was there, but ssh he wasn’t going to admit to that.) There were a couple stores he liked, he was a big fan of the training course, and then when you got to the food?
If you wanted to talk quick but not actual fast food? Hinkles was pretty much the winner. Plus it was a good place to watch a decent mix of people from town, and just because he was stuck in town didn’t mean he was going to stop being a Shadowhunter. He was still going to watch and learn, no matter what.
Which meant that when he caught sight of a familiar face -- just about the only one besides his sister that he knew -- walking into Hinkles, he couldn’t help but smile.
***
Harry was out trying to clear his head after training. He was tired and hungry. Hinkles seemed like the best place to rest, and to eat, frankly, and to get some air. He just wanted to get out of the house some.
Spotting Alec, he smiled. “Hey! How’s it going?”
***
“Not bad,” Alec replied with a deceptively casual shrug. “I’m finally getting used to this place -- the curse of being new, it takes you a while and then it just starts falling into place.”
He gestured for Harry to join him. “How about you? How’s it going for you?”
They hadn’t really had a chance to talk much before, and that was kind of a shame.
***
“It does. This place really can be weird sometimes, but it can also grow on you.” Harry nodded. He had started out scared and scarred, but he had found peace here.
“Its going really well for me here. In fact…” he paused, then nodded. “Tell me something, would you ever go home if you could?”
***
Alec frowned. “I… don’t know?” he started. “That’s kind of complicated. I mean, for one? I’m too new here to not be confused by this place. For another? My sister’s here. Yeah she’s back home too, but… she’s here. She’s here and she has a life, and it’s something I don’t want to miss because I’m going to be an uncle.”
He looked at Harry curiously. “Why? Something got you wanting to go home, or are you just kind pondering the idea?”
***
Harry listened, and smiled. “I can understand that. And no, not wanting to go home. I never want to go home.” Harry spoke softly.
“I want to stay here, if I can, for the rest of my life.” he rubbed his face and shrugged. “I dunno why I feel so strongly about it, but I do.”
Then he smiled. “But congratulations on imminent unclehood.”
***
“Thanks.” Alec couldn’t help smiling. “I’m not sure what was weirder, finding out that Izzy’s gonna be a mom, or finding out that here? She’s older than me. She’s actually the middle child, so it was kind of odd.”
But the dynamic hadn’t changed, so really, that was what made it weird.
“I mean, I love my sister no matter what, but it’s… different, being the baby of the family.”
***
“It sounds like it, yeah. I never had any siblings, but it sounds complicated.” Harry wasn’t sure how you familied, really. His mother had died in childbirth, and his father had died when he was very young. A foster home had held him until he was a little older, and then he was taken in by a wizard foster parent, and that went terribly.
At least in Madison, he had someone he trusted.
“Do you two get along?”
***
“We do,” Alec said. “She’s the more… free-spirited one out of us. Which isn’t to be confused with not being focused and determined. But I’m the more focused and determined.” He smiled wryly. “I’ve been worrying about her since she was born, as more than one person has told us.”
It was probably even true, too.
***
“Isn’t that a sibling’s job? From what I’ve heard, it’s to bother and worry, right?” Harry grinned at the guy, thinking it would be cool, to have a sibling. He had no clue what that would feel like.
“Do you two hang out a lot here?”
***
“Not much yet,” Alec said. “But that’s only because I haven’t been here that long. I don’t doubt that we’ll be bothering each other as much as always. It’s… kind of hard to imagine not being in each other’s lives as much as we’ve always been.”
They’d worked together so closely, in addition to being such close siblings, that it just kind of threw him for a loop. Just the idea.
“Her boyfriend’s good people, too. Which makes me feel better. Not that it’s my choice who she’s with or anything, obviously,” Alec said with the sigh of an older brother who’d heard that lecture before. “But it makes me feel better.”
***
“Heh. I am sure. And that is cool.” He nodded. “I hope your lives only get better.” Harry liked happy endings.
“Who’s the boyfriend? “ Harry was curious. He knew next to no one, really.
“I have just been studying myself, not really thinking about anything else, yet.”
***
“Johnny Storm,” Alec replied. “You might know of him, at least. He’s been here forever, I’m pretty sure. So’s Izzy. Which, again, weird to me considering she’s back home, too. I swear, I don’t get this place.”
Which made it kind of intriguing. Strange and uncomfortable, but a little intriguing all the same.
A lot of things in his life lately could be described that way, actually.
***
Harry shook his head. “Never heard of him, sorry.” He squinted. “I don’t think I’ve heard her name either.” He smiled wryly.
“Time magic… its very odd. I don’t understand how it works either.” He nodded, scritching his chin.
“How are you settling in?”
***
“I like to think I’m doing pretty well,” Alec said. “Of course, that probably means the town’s going to throw some kind of a loop at me as soon as it possibly can.”
Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise him whatsoever. It seemed to be the way of the town, and wouldn’t be something he was unused to.
***
Harry chuckled. “Well, yes, probably.” He shook his head. “I’m curious to see what will happen. Not eager mind you, but curious.” he nodded again.
“And I am hoping, no matter what, that you and yours will be okay.”
***
“Thank you for that.” Alec glanced at his phone. “Sorry to invite and run like this,” he said with a rueful smile. “But I’ve got stuff I need to go do, so I should probably get going.”
He stood and gave another smile. “It was great getting to see you again, though.”
***
“It was nice seeing you too. I’m sure we’ll run into each other again.” Harry smiled and headed off himself, waving.
“Say hi to yours for me.”
***
“Hopefully soon,” Alec said. “And I well.”
Izzy would be happy to know that he’d made… well, not a friend exactly, but that he at least had somebody in town he was friendly with. It was a difference, yeah, but it was also close enough.
They’d take it for now.
