Arthur tended to keep a strict routine, at least as far as sleeping and waking. He got up at the same time every morning, without setting an alarm, and without fail. Sleeping past 6:00 made him feel like he'd wasted precious time, even if he didn't do much more than drink a cup of coffee and read the online newspaper for the first half hour. By 6:30, he was walking Pinto, and then he went about getting ready for work.
Waking up late simply wasn't an option. Waking up late was to be undisciplined, and undisciplined meant weak to Arthur. He'd been terribly undisciplined during his first few weeks in Madison Valley. He didn't care to ever act like that again. So he kept a strict schedule, and he rarely strayed from it.
He woke with a start, knowing right away that something was wrong. Ariadne was beside him, apparently fine. Pinto was curled up at the foot of the bed, though he raised his head when Arthur sat up. Arthur looked at the clock, the bright red numbers reading 09:06. Something akin to panic rose in his throat. How the hell had he slept three hours, more than three hours, later than he always slept?
Feeling that this was completely unacceptable, he lurched to his feet. Pinto jumped off the bed, and ran around Arthur in a tizzy, clearly unsettled by Arthur's actions. Arthur could relate, he too was unsettled. "It's after nine, Ariadne," he said, his tone implying that that was a worst possible case scenario.
