It was shaping up to be a perfectly normal day. Wanda got up when John did and went down to make coffee and do some homework while he was out for his morning run. When he got back, she was hard at work doing algebra problems.
“How was your run?” she asked, glancing up when he joined her in the kitchen.
***
John stopped on his way to get a drink so he could kiss Wanda on the cheek on his way by. “Cold. But it’s nice and warm in here.” It felt really good to come inside after running in the frigid outside. Almost too warm but he knew that after he’d been inside for a little bit he’d feel cold again. At least until he took a shower or had some coffee.
“How’s the homework going?”
***
Wanda shrugged. “I think I’m finally getting the hang of solving for X,” she said. “But now they’re throwing in some problems that have multiple variables.” And that was a little more difficult than she was prepared to deal with.
“Maybe you can help me after your shower?” One of the best things about living with a pilot and a doctor was having built in tutors for her difficult homework.
***
“Ah they’re changing up the letters and combinations on you?” It was always fun when you started to get to new combinations in algebra. It could be confusing all over again. “Sure I can come back and…” He’d reached out his hand to pick up a cup to pour out the coffee and it had floated up into his hand instead and John jumped back with the cup falling out of his hand and clattering across the counter.
“Okay, that was weird. And lucky I didn’t have coffee yet…”
***
“What happened?” Wanda asked, looking up from her homework when she heard the mug crashing against the counter. “Are you okay?”
She stood up and walked over, wanting to make sure that he wasn’t bleeding or anything. At least there was no chance that he had burned himself.
***
“I’m not sure. The cup sort of met me half way.” Nothing was bleeding, but he had knocked the handle off the coffee cup. “It made me miss my grip.” He carefully picked up the pieces of the handle to throw it in the trash. It was a good thing they had plenty of extras in the house. One thing they didn’t need to worry about was how many coffee cups were around.
“So it was weird. You didn’t happen to try to hand it to me your way did you?”
***
It took her a moment to realize that he was referring to her telekinesis. “No, of course not,” Wanda said. She didn’t generally use her powers for mundane household tasks, but she decided to try and help him clean up by floating some of the smaller shards of ceramic into the trash can.
She frowned when nothing happened. “Okay, that is also weird.”
***
Since he didn’t know she was trying to do anything John looked at her curiously. “What is also weird?” He paused to throw the pieces of cup he had away while waiting for her answer. He hadn’t really thought she had tried to do anything telekenetic with the cup when it floated but he was kind of hoping since other options weren’t probably going to be fun.
***
Wanda shook her head. “I tried to use my telekinesis to pick up the pieces and it didn’t work,” she said. Most of the time, she kept the rest of her abilities locked down pretty tightly since she didn’t really understand them and didn’t want to cause anyone harm by accident, but now she deliberately dropped her mental shields and tried to find a mental connection to anyone.
“It’s like my powers are gone.”
***
Hearing that clarified what had just happened with the coffee cup since people in town had swapped powers around before and John clenched his fingers together and sighed. “I have a feeling I know where they went.” And was glad of whatever natural mental shields he’d always seemed to have since he wasn’t noticing anything different with that yet.
“But we could probably test it by taking you out to the puddle jumper to see if it likes you.”
*** “Why don’t you try to move something on purpose first,” Wanda said. It wouldn’t be that surprising if the somehow swapped abilities given the way that Madison Valley worked, but that seemed like a safer way to test things than to put her in the puddle jumper.
Though she had to admit the idea of flying it was kind of thrilling.
***
Well because he was worried if he tried to do something on purpose it wouldn’t end well but John nodded and looked at the other cups hanging on the wall and concentrated on bringing one to him. He had to do a lot of visualizing for the Atlantis machinery to make it work but it was different when it was Wanda’s powers. The cup did come off the wall but he’d maybe thought about it too hard since it zinged across at them and John ended up pushing Wanda out of the way of it before it hit them and it ended up smashing against the fridge.
“Well...that didn’t go well.”
***
Wanda instinctively held her hand up to try and shield them when the mug came flying towards them because she was so used to using her powers for that kind of thing. Obviously it didn’t work and she was grateful that John pushed her out of the way.
“No, I don’t think it did,” she agreed after the shards of mug littered the floor. “I suppose we ought to clean that up before anyone else comes down. And you need to be careful what you’re thinking about until this is resolved.”
***
“I think I’ll just use a broom this time.” John had pushed her on instinct even though she normally could protect both of them and was glad the instinct had kicked in. He would really hate to have hit her with the mug. “And maybe if I try to practice again I’ll do it outside.”
It was reminding him a little of the time he’d been infected with the Iratus bug dna and had put his fist through the glass of Elizabeth’s office without thinking. Sure he had his mind but he could do a lot of damage without thinking.
****
Outside was probably the best place to practice, yes. Wanda was more concerned about his accidentally reading someone’s greatest fears moreso than any TK accidents though.
“So, now I get to try flying the puddle jumper?”
Which might also end up being a disaster.
***
He really didn’t want to think about the worst fear thing just yet. John was usually pretty realistic about facing what he was going to need to but this one was out of his league.
“Well, how about we start with can you turn the puddle jumper on and not just start with flying?” He chuckled but honestly she couldn’t be worse at it than Rodney was.
***
“I suppose that’s fair,” Wanda said. Honestly, she wasn’t sure if she trusted herself to fly it and she didn’t want to risk hurting them or anyone else. But she had enjoyed the flights they’d taken together since it showed up and it was kind of cool to think about doing it.
She leaned in to kiss him. “At least we know that things like this don’t tend to last too long.”
***
“About a week usually. I wonder if this is just you and me or if it’s a town wide thing again. Last time a bunch of powers switched it got a little hairy.” He kept her close after the kiss and wished it was a weekend. But he had work...which could be interesting...and she had school. “Want to check out the network before we try anything else?”
Maybe if there was a lot of people with their powers switched he could take a vacation day.
***
Wanda nodded. “I can look at the network while you get your shower,” she said. “And then we’ll figure out what to do.” They had plenty of places they needed to go and she, at least, shouldn’t encounter anything potentially dangerous, but she knew how unpredictable how powers could be and that made her nervous for John’s sake.
***
“That sounds like a good plan.” He wanted to think over the options for his next week and the shower would give him a chance to do that. Wanda’s powers scared her sometimes and he had a lot of respect for that. “I’ll be back in a few minutes okay.”
She’d have an idea of what was going on and he’d be clean and ready to deal with it by the time he was done and back.
