Who: Kate Bishop and Hulk
When: Wednesday
Where: The woods
What: Tree smashing and chatting...as much as you can chat with Hulk that is.
Warnings: A few spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok!
Status: Closed/Completed G-Doc
Hulk decided that he didn’t like this place. There wasn’t anything to smash and everything was small and delicate. It was boring and he wanted to go back to Sakaar where he was a celebrated champion and had his own space.
Feeling restless, he decided to venture out of the house Thor was letting him stay in. Maybe he’d find something interesting. He walked through town, ignoring the stares and shocked gasps of people when they spotted him and taking care not to accidentally break anything.
When he came upon an open space, he decided to sit down in the grass, not minding the cold at all. At least he could breathe out here.
***
The cold wasn’t really something that bothered Kate. She had grown up in New York and cold winters were typical. She did appreciate the snow when they had it. It wasn’t gross in a matter of seconds or filled with trash and such. It did make it difficult for some decent target practice, but Kate got by. She always did. It was how she was.
Presently on her way back to the casino after picking up some lunch and coffee, Kate nearly dropped her items when she caught sight of an all-too-familiar green being.
She was careful as she approached from the side, hoping that her movement had been noticed. “Hey, Big Guy. Fancy meeting you here, huh?” Keeping a safe distance, Kate kept a friendly and calm tone in her voice.
***
Most people gave him a wide berth, so Hulk definitely noticed when someone was approaching him. It made him curious, especially when she spoke like she knew him. He was pretty sure that he’d never seen her before. Maybe she was friends with Banner.
“Who you?” he asked. “Hulk no like it here.”
***
“Yeah. I hear that a lot. It’s cool, though. Could I get you anything?” Kate could understand Hulk’s dislike, though. There were a lot of tiny places. Places that Bruce could be content moving around in. Not Hulk, though.
“Or, hey! I bet you’re one hell of a tree climber, huh?” They could head off to the woods, keeping clear of the obstacle course, and maybe he could find a bit of comfort there. Kate would be happy to tag along and maybe get him to stay there long enough for her to let someone know.
***
He was skeptical of anyone being nice to him since very few people were. Something about this girl reminded him a bit of Angry Girl though so he was willing to give her a chance.
“Trees good,” he agreed. There were some around here, but they were pretty puny and wouldn’t support his weight.
***
Yes. Good. Kate was definitely going in a good direction if he agreed to go. As crazy as it seemed, Kate was pretty happy to see Hulk even if he wasn’t the happiest at the moment. The whole mess at home with Clint killing Banner? Kate had forgotten about that and probably wouldn’t anytime soon.
“See the woods over there? That’s where we want to go. Want to give a girl a lift?” They had some pretty clear paths leading in the direction. She didn’t want to tell him what to do or where to go. Kate had a feeling that wouldn’t work out well.
***
Telling him what to do definitely wouldn’t end well. Hulk looked skeptical when she asked for a lift, but he shrugged and held out his hand.
“Hulk smash trees?” he asked. There was a definite lack of things to smash around here.
***
His hand was a lot bigger close-up. Yep. She would see why people were cautious. Still, she wanted to show a level of trust. That she wasn’t too afraid.
Climbing onto his hand, Kate nodded. “I’m going to suggest the bigger ones. The ones way, way over there. They smash louder.” So a few trees would fall in the forest. If they were the only ones around, no one else would hear them.
***
“You smash too?” he asked. She didn’t look like she was terribly capable of smashing, but sometimes appearances could be deceiving.
Once she was settled on his hand, he started walking in the direction that she’d pointed.
***
“I’m going to try, but I have a feeling you’ll be the better smasher.” If Kate Bishop had ever thought she’d be chilling with Hulk like this? She would have never believed it. Yet, here she was.
“So, where’ve you been, Big Guy? Hopefully, somewhere you could do a lot of smashing?” Should she dare ask about Bruce? Kate would consider it later. Right now, things were going alright and she wanted to keep it that way.
***
Hulk grinned when she said that he would be the better smasher. Of course he was. Smashing was his specialty.
“Champion,” he said, beating his chest with his free hand. “In space. Hulk smash everyone.” Even Thor, no matter what Thor said about their fight.
***
“Space? Wow. That’s...wow.” So they had been in space. That was just as crazy as just going home for a bit. Then again, Kate had been in space once. And in different dimensions and times.
“So, you like, beat up everyone in space? Ha! I bet they went flying pretty far, huh? You know since there’s no gravity and things just fly off and … nevermind.” Her rambling started and was evolving into an entire conversation with herself, but Kate caught herself. Poor Hulk.
“Well, I’m glad you’re back! People here missed you, you know.”
***
“No,” Hulk said. “Miss Banner. Not Hulk.”
He didn’t really have memories of this town, but he knew that Banner had been here and people wanted him back.
“Space was fun. People like Hulk.” Unlike on Earth where they mostly were afraid of him.
***
“Hey. Don’t think like that, okay? I missed Hulk and I missed Banner. But, I don’t know. You’re kind of the same to me. Can’t have one without the other. So, without Bruce? There’s no Hulk.” Kate gave a little small and patted her hand against his palm.
“Where I come from? I don’t have either anymore and that made me really sad. So, yeah. I miss Dr. Banner. But I’m glad to see you, Big Guy. Hulk’s saved a lot of people where I’m from. Me included!”
It wasn’t easy, though. Kate knew it couldn’t be. For Hulk or for Bruce. Even in her world, they could never find a perfect way to exist without people getting hurt or something terrible happening.
***
It was definitely not easy and that was largely Banner’s fault. If Hulk wasn’t so afraid of being shut down forever, he wouldn’t fight as hard against letting Banner resurface. But if the scientist had his way, Hulk would never come back.
“Hulk hero,” he said. At least he had been when he was with the Avengers. That was a long time ago though.
***
“Definitely a hero.” Because he was just as much as Banner was. Kate had heard about the whole ordeal from Bucky and they definitely needed both Banner and Hulk to save the world.
Kate hopped down once they reached the woods and took a look around. Empty and quiet. Just how she was hoping the area would be. Picking up a twig, Kate looked up at him with a grin as she snapped it in half. “Kate smash?”
***
Hulk grinned at her, picked up a nearby tree trunk, and snapped it in half. “Hulk smash.”
This was going to be fun.
